Bruce Hornsby said the following on June 16, 2021: "Reflecting on what would be Tupac Shakur’s 50th birthday today. Of all the different hip-hop and rap versions of “The Way It Is," and there have been many (notably E-40, Wyclef Jean, Akon and Polo G), "Changes" is my favorite. As someone who spent 34 years spinning rock, pop, and Christian records live on air, I 100% agree that you guys doing reactions are the modern DJs! When I started in the 80s we still had to pop in an 8 track to play a commercial and our segues were sometimes nerve-racking as we had to blend the down ramp of a song on vinyl into the up ramp of the next song. Nothing was digital because it didn't exist yet. Your generation of DJs, artists, and producers has taken what used to make us nervous and turned it into an art form and it's so beautiful to see! Rappers have taken the art of sound and pushed it into the future in a way that I never thought I'd see in my lifetime. Thank you! Keep up the excellent work!

The problem with most rap covers isn't the fact that they used someone's else's work to create, it is that they often didn't credit the original. Proper credit to the original shares the royalties if there are any and shows respect to the creator. Similar to reaction channels, show respect to the original content and you should be OK with the creator. Some are still assholes though, usually the label.

His staying power did not last long as far as radio hits went but the guy is still touring and making great music. Bruce was helped out to get a recording contract by Huey Lewis. The two became good friends and Huey pushed the record execs to check their demo out and they ended up getting signed.

Bruce Hornsby has a deep catalogue with many hit songs. Lots of his songs had social messaging and are worth reacting to. "Gonna Be Some Changes Made" (Home Depot Commercial), "Mandolin Rain", "The Valley Road", "Look Out Any Window", "Every Little Kiss", "Across The River", "Candy Mountain Road" ... Bruce Hornsby has written hit songs for other artists and/or played piano on hit songs for other artists like "I Can't Make You Love Me" by Bonnie Raitt and "The End Of The Innocence" by Don Henley.

I remember hearing "Changes" when it dropped and instantly recognizing the melody as Bruce's. The first thought after was the messaging, but with a slightly different but distinct perspective. Whatever it was, he felt it and knew how to express it in his own perspective. Music is a universal language. It should be shared with everyone.

To be honest, Bruce & this song did reach all the demographics back then through MTV. That's why Tupac knew about it! That was one of the best & most impt things about MTV, it was really a society-wide thing, a cultural phenomenon that was a common touchstone for a wide variety of people. We heard music and artists that we would've never sought out on our own. That's why Gen X & some Millennials have such wide musical tastes & know everything that came out in the 80s (and some 70s), whether it was rap, rock, R&B, new wave, hair bands etc. Even if it wasn't your style, you'd at least been exposed to it and you had that in common with everyone else. Gen Xers can still get together, even people who wouldn't normally hang out or get along, and you better believe we could talk for hours about the music and the videos etc.
