Written by Dean Dillon in 1981 (one of the best songwriters ever) for David Allen Coe. George Jones did a cover in 1983 which made it to #2 on the country music charts. However, Chris Stapleton made this song his forever with his brilliant interpretation.

He used to play in a rock band called the Jompson Brothers. Before he went solo he played a bluegrass band Called the StteelDrivers. That's where he gets his sound from. I hope this helps you understand Chris Stapleton a little better. I love the long runs he does. He's got a killer band playing with him as well. Oh my favorite song by him is Broken Halos. It really helped me when my mother passed away.

BP, this is a rabbit hole you need to go down. Chris never misses. Not even ONCE. Re: this song, yes it’s an old song, and the original arrangement was quite different, but Chris plays it as a blues song, using the same chord progression as Etta James “I’d Rather Go Blind”. So he really reinvented the song.

that is his wife morgan. she is a recording artist herself. once his career took off, she sang backup and help him and helped him with his stage anxiety issue. they got 5 kids so far ! he was previously a member lead singer and songwriter for an award winning bluegrass group the "Steel drivers". before that and during he was a songwriter in Nashville and wrote hits for other artist. he met morgan working the front desk at a recording studio.
