RIP Chris. One of a kind. Amazing voice and writer. Chris has said that the song came while driving home and hearing something about a black hole sun by the reporter. He didn't hear the rest of the story, just that line and he put it together. A song he has said is just a put together with words and phrases he thought sounded good together, almost as if the listener is supposed to figure out a meaning for it for themselves. Chris was an interesting cat. As many genius artists are. You don't always know what or why they do what they do.

this song has a special place in my heart. it was what i was listening to when i realized i had a drug problem 25 year ago. i still remember that night vividly. i was way too under the influence, flipping through a book of aliens in fiction, this song was playing in the background, and i started staring at the wall, hallucinating, felt sick to my stomach and ran to the bathroom to go throw up. i remember hugging the toilet, slipping in and out of consciousness, worried i was going to die. for me, this song was the first step in my sobriety.

NIce reaction, I saw a nice interview with Chris about 10 years ago. He said he wrote this song in about 2 hrs while driving home from a gig. Wrote the music and lyrics in his head and when he got home he sang it into a recorder in case he was too high to remember. But said he did remember every note the next morning. Just an amazing talent.

There's another band Chris Cornell was a part of you may want to check out. That group is Temple of the Dog. It was formed after the death of Chris's friend Andrew Wood, who was the singer of the band Mother Love Bone, and featured two members of Mother Love Bone. They recorded one album, which had a popular single "Hunger Strike", which featured guest vocalist Eddie Vedder. Most of the members of Temple of the Dog besides Chris were, at the time, forming what would become Pearl Jam.

Huge hit single in 1994 w/ a creepy music video... and cryptic lyrics. That was 'Black hole Sun' by Soundgarden... It was about Cornell wishing for the end of the world around him... or the end of everything. He wrote a similar song w/ Soundgarden - 'Blow up the outside world'... Chris Cornell had a history of struggling w/ depression (and drugs)... Quite a few of his lyrics are real dark and ominous... it was clear now, knowing how he died in 2017, that he was clearly struggling and considering the end of his life w/ songs like 'Pretty noose' ... 'The day I tried to live' ... 'Like suicide' ... 'Fell on black days' ... by Soundgarden 🤘🤘🔥🔥 One of the standout solo songs by Chris Cornell was "Can't change me"... from 2000. It was about how a woman he was close to has a profound effect on everyone around her, but she can't seem to make a difference w/ him. Soundgarden was the Seattle band that Chris Cornell formed around 1984 and soon rounded up the line-up w/ Kim Thayil (lead guitar), Matt Cameron (drums) and Hiro Yamamoto (bass)... They became a major attraction in the Seattle underground scene and debuted w/ 2 EP's and the album 'Ultramega OK' in 1988... and then signed w/ a major label A&M Records, releasing 'Louder than love' in 1989 before bassist Hiro Yamamoto left the band; he was replaced in 1990 by Ben Shepherd (bass) 1991 was a pivotal year for the Seattle rock scene - Alice in Chains had debuted w/ 'Facelift' in 1990... Pearl Jam recorded and released their debut album 'Ten'... And Nirvana broke the scene into commercial success w/ their 2nd album 'Nevermind'... Chris Cornell had released 2 albums that year - Temple of the Dog (as a tribute to his late friend Andrew Wood) and Soundgarden's album 'Badmotorfinger'... By 1992, both Temple of the Dog and the 'Badmotorfinger' album had sold platinum in the USA and Soundgarden was actively touring into 1993. After the death of Nirvana's Kurt Cobain in 1994, the Seattle scene was starting to implode w/ Pearl Jam disappearing from public view and Alice in Chains slowly retreating from view as well... But Soundgarden released their biggest record 'Superunknown' in '94 and it was a massive hit on MTV and radio w/ 4 music videos and sold 6x platinum. In 1996, Soundgarden returned w/ the album 'Down on the upside'... it sold platinum, but the band was not functioning optimally on tour and while touring on the record, live appearances were reportedly so bad that being on tour was unsustainable. In 1997, Soundgarden shocked everyone by announcing their split. Soundgarden finally reunited in 2012 and recorded a comeback album 'King animal'... and were working on a new album by 2017. However, the same issues that broke up the band seemed to dog Soundgarden by that year... After a particularly bad Soundgarden show in 2017, Chris Cornell was apparently distraught while on the phone w/ his wife and abruptly hung up... When security went to check on Chris Cornell a while later, he had barricaded himself in his hotel room... They eventually found him dead from suicide 😪 Chris Cornell joined an ominous list of 90's rockers that passed away too soon... from Kurt Cobain of Nirvana, Layne Staley and bassist Mike Starr of Alice in Chains... Scott Weiland of Stone Temple Pilots... Mark Lanegan of the Screaming Trees... bassist Kristen Pfaff of Hole ... Shannon Hoon of Blind Melon... Bradley Nowell of Sublime ... Some of the things chris himself said about this song was, that he was just "playing with words for words sake", "guess it worked for a lot of People but I have no idea how you'd begin to taken that one litteraly" and "i sure didnt have an understanding of it I was just sucked in by the music and tried to paint a picture with the lyrics’ there was no real idea to get across" Also according to the band the video was entirely the directors idea, and at that point the only thing they wanted to do in videos was pretend to play and not look to excited about it.

I loving listening to you try to interpret the lyrics, like we all did 30 years ago. I remember watching a video where someone asked him what was the song about. Now, he could have been completely messing with the asker, but he said it means nothing. They tried to pick the most bizarre phrases and threw the lyrics together. I couldn’t tell if he was being sarcastic or that’s really what they did. He just got real quiet after that and kind of bowed out of the conversation. Either way, I love it, and respect it. Chris Cornell has said that this song is sad, but had no real idea to get across. He wrote it in a stream of consciousness from something he misheard from a news anchor. He thought the anchor said "Black Hole Sun" when they really said something else, and he thought it was an amazing song title. The song was written around that misheard song title. You really have to look it up for yourself to get what he's truly saying, but I think when people hear this song, each one will interpret it a different way. The songwriter can tell you what the song is about, and the music fan will still choose to see it differently. "But see, what I think you meant, was..." R.I.P. Chris. I've been a Soundgarden friend since the early 90s. I was bummed when they broke up in '97 and excited when they reunited and started touring again.

It sparked from something a news anchor said on TV and I heard wrong. I heard 'blah blah blah black hole sun blah blah blah'. I thought that would make an amazing song title, but what would it sound like? It all came together, pretty much the whole arrangement including the guitar solo that's played beneath the riff. I spent a lot of time spinning those melodies in my head so I wouldn't forget them. I got home and whistled it into a Dictaphone. The next day I brought it into the real world, assigning a couple of key changes in the verse to make the melodies more interesting. Then I wrote the lyrics and that was similar, a stream of consciousness based on the feeling I got from the chorus and title" " - " "It's just sort of a surreal dreamscape, a weird, play-with-the-title kind of song" " - " "Lyrically it's probably the closest to me just playing with words for words' sake, of anything I've written. I guess it worked for a lot of people who heard it, but I have no idea how you'd begin to take that one literally." " - - Which is all rather strange considering it seemed pretty obvious even at the time {I turned 18 in December 94} and absolutely certain now that this was a call for the World to End! Chris Cornell was 29 when Superunknown was released and probably 28 when he wrote Black Hole Sun, he grew up in the 70s and 80s turning 16 in 1980 and 26 in 1990. The video is clearly a play on ostensibly right of centre suburban christian and jewish americans of the 70s and 80s believing that life was a utopia whilst early members of suburban generation x like Chris grew up not knowing their place in that fake world. - Generation X were born as of 1964 so yes Chris Cornell was Generation X - Boomers were 46-63, Gen X 64-81, Millennials 82-99, Gen Z 00-17, Alphas 18-35. Jan 1 46 to Dec 31 63 is 18 years - A Generation Jan 1 00 to Dec 31 17 in 18 years - It may look like 17 but you're counting the full year of 2000 and the full year of 2017.

Chris Cornell was one of the greatest grunge rock vocalists of all times. I am still amazed at his vocal range and sheer power. My favorite Soundgarden song is Fell on Black Days. I did a comparative paper on this song and the book Pedro Paramo. 2 different languages but the exact same imagery. Cornell is quoted as saying he wrote this song after seeing the moon rock Seatle used to have. The song is more of a reflection of that experience.

Chris Cornell is absolutely one of the best male vocalists of all time. You should also check out Soundgarden "Fell on Black Days". I'd like to see your reaction to Temple of the Dog "Say Hello 2 Heaven" live. Chris' vocals are insane in that one. He has been a part of many bands and did some amazing work solo. ❤
