Depeche Mode is the definition of synth pop. You think it sounds like 80‘s? That’s because they defined the sound of that decade. Absolute giants since 40 years.

The crazy thing about this band, is that they started in 1981, and almost every year in the 80's they released an album. They struck commercial US success with the album previous to this, in 1988 and toured a 101 concert streak across the country ending in the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. In the early 90's they began their 'album almost every four years' trend that has carried on to current times, with their latest album that just came out last year. 40 years of constant albums. few bands can say that.

DM redefined music back in the early 80's. The Cure - Kraftwerk - New Order & Depeche Mode are pioneers of this sound. DM went from being called a "One Hit Wonder," to releasing multiple hits & selling over 100 Million records. Inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame & to this day is the most covered synth pop band in history. They have influenced thousands of bands. They are absolute legends. I saw them live 3 times in 2024 alone! Incredible band live. - A song I would highly recommend off of the same album as "Enjoy the Silence," is "HALO."

You got it right... It's a French name meaning "Fast Fashion" ("deep - esh mode") even though the band is British... They debuted as an electronic synth pop group in 1980... 'Enjoy the silence' was from 1990 - it became one of Depeche Mode's biggest singles from the iconic album 'Violator'... which also had the hit singles: "Personal Jesus" ... 'Halo' ... 'Policy of truth' ... 'World in my eyes'...🔥🔥

This has been my favorite band since my friend from the UK, who moved to Canada when he was young, brought his music collection with him and introduced me to their music in the later 80's. I have seen them multiple times in Canada and the US, and in 2017 I flew to see them at the Olympic Stadium in London, with VIP early access tickets. Me and about 40 other people got lead onto the stadium field a couple hours before the concert and were allowed to set up our spots at the stage front for the show. Looking back, during the concert, and seeing near 80,000 people behind me, packing the stadium, was the absolute best time in my entire life.

They were definitely products and pioneers of the early 80's New Wave movement that came out of the UK. This band specifically favored synth because as teenagers, the original band mates weren't allowed to make too much noise in the house, so using actual classic instruments was not in the cards. They did incorporate them in the later 80's as their success grew. That straight synth has become a hallmark sound for the band over the years though.

This is a band that reinvented itself at least 3 times: started as UK-weenie elctro-pop (just can't get enough); next phase was dark synch perfection (master & servant, violator and many others) and third came their Los Angeles heroin chic dark rock synth phase (walking in my shoes). During the early/mid 80s to the early 90s there were 4 UK bands that got pretty big eventually but started out sorta obscure especially in the USA: Cure, Smiths, DM and U2 ... and while anyone who adopted them early before they got semi-big usually liked more than one of them they usually had one of them that they identified with more than the others; the really introverted sensitive gothy types often loved the Cure most, the nerdy sensitive white guys like myself were Smiths/Morrissey identifiers and while i never knew a teens/20s ish person actually cool enough to identify with DM (many faked it or pretended to) they were the band of the coolest kid you knew who smoked and was a tortured soul (DM had lots of female fans who lusted for Dave Gahan) ... and mainstream dorks liked U2 who were the lamest of these bands by a country mile and couldn't musically or culturally hold a candle to any of the other three.

What I love about the 80's specifically New Wave is that artist just interpreted their songs in their Own (distinct authentic) Voice. No One was trying to OUT Sing or OUT perform each other with vocal gymnastics and histrionics. It never occurred to me that that would ever be a thing and it makes me wish that that was not the case in modern music.

This is probably their most mainstream song from their arguably best album Violator that came out in 1989. I say arguably because while every song on there is a hit without any fillers, us Depeche Mode fans are too cool admit that a song or album with the most commercial success is our favorite! I for one will fully admit this is my favorite song from their best album :) Sad part is that I didn't become a Depeche Mode fan until the 90's. During the actual 80's I didn't realize how many great songs they already have, or about the world of synthetic pop, new wave, or 80's club music because I was a dumb kid who thought you had to listen to one genre (mine was heavy metal and rock) and it wasn't until I mentally matured more that I opened my eyes and really got into that stuff! Since you started in 1989 at the peak of their success, jump ahead to a few years later after drugs almost took Dave's life and listen to a few songs like Walking in my Shoes from the Songs of Faith and Devotion and you'd see a stark contrast. Then jump back to the early 80's and see them as babies and how much more upbeat the were!
