The whole Black album is fire, but my favorite Metallica albums are the S&M albums!! They're backed by The San Francisco Symphony, and it's a whole different experience!! No leaf clover, and Hero of the day are 2 of my favorite songs off of those albums! Definitely worth a peep! And James is 💯 a poet!!

The last consert I saw was Metallica in Phoenix AZ around 1998. Most hard rock bands do Ballads which are usually my favorites. This song to me is one to sit back, close your eyes and feel it. Depending on ones life experiences it could mean different things to each individual listining to it.

Really appreciate you going in blind. I worked with a contemporary artist who held the view that people who didn't understand art, shouldn't bother going to art galleries. He wanted everyone to be fully aware of the context, the meaning the artist had intended when creating a piece. It hurt my soul to hear him say that - art of any kind, be it visual or sound is for everyone and can have a profound affect on us. I worked in a museum where an Ikebana floral arrangement moved a middle-aged man to tears. I ended up hugging him as he explained it had suddenly reminded him of a recently deceased friend. So I don't believe limit should be put on interpretations and gut emotional responses to created works. As for this song, I always took the lyrics as being about his solidarity with his band members, being open and vulnerable when singing and through the lyrics he writes, that nothing matters more to him than creating authentic art - that's my interpretation anyhoo. Like you - I enjoy going digging into meanings and intentions later. 🥰 A stunning track, so glad you listened.

For decades, I interpreted this song as simply living life on your own terms and being true to yourself. It wasn’t until I hit 40 that I had an epiphany that the lyrics were a love song. However, even knowing it’s a love song, now, I still believe it can easily be interpreted in other ways. The best songs always can be. Check out “Don’t Tread On Me” from this same album. With your appreciation for patriotism, you will feel that one.

you'd be pleasantly surprised how many rock bands have love songs. check out "the flame still burns" by foreigner and compare it to "hot blooded". cheap trick's "the flame", white snake with "too many tears". many, many more songs and bands that break the all too common misconception of rock bands being all shouting, angst and anger- specially bands from the mid 60s to 70s, some even up to the 80s.

Dave Grohl (I know wrong band but give me a moment) said he never reveals specifically what the lyrics mean to any song. When he plays live in front of 15,000 people, he want the song to have 15,000 meanings. Every single person should fell their own way, have their own meaning. Love your channel. Fyi, super high fidelity, 8 or 16 channel reel to reel decks are still a thing, and TDK still makes the best tape. Many science and medical applications -- astronomy, neural activity, seismology, cardiac rhythms, etc -- still make primary recordings in analog format so as not to miss anything which digital fidelity might mask.

Rock can be, and often is, amazing lyrically, but don't miss the fact that 3 people (bands like Chevelle) all the way up past 13 people (Slipknot) are not just playing instruments, in sync with each other, and making them all make sense/fit together. And then get up on a stage and do it all in front of thousands of people.

As someone who grew up listening to rock my whole life and is sort of just within the past few years getting into hip hop, it's interesting to me how rap and hip-hop sort of have a similar stigma about the other that it's all just incomprehensible trash that's unrelatable and shallow. Both genres (as do all I think) have that on the surface level, but if you dig into the legends and find the good stuff, there's great stories and music in both.

The beauty of this song is it can be about so many things. A relationship with a loved one, a relationship with a higher power, the band's relationship and trust in each other, or to the fans of Metallica that have followed and supported them for years. When this is done live, and you are part of that crowd singing... it is transcendental. It feels like you are part of a family. The band refers to their fans as the "Metallica Family," I have followed them since their beginning and now have 3 generations (me, my sons, and grandkids) going to Met concerts. It's an amazing thing!

This song is off the Black Album( album 5) James wrote this song about a girlfriend but didn’t want to release it.( so you’re on point). Later Lars ( the drummer) insisted on recording it and it became Metallica’s anthem. It resonated their journey and became a tribute to each other. By this time they were on their 3rd bassist ( Ron McGovney, Cliff Burton, Jason Newsted). 2nd guitarist ( Dave Mustaine, Kirk Hammett). McGovney left, Mustaine was kicked out but Burton died in a tour bus wreck in Germany. Burton was a musical student but not at Juilliard. The rest were just teenage rockers. Burton’s influence is apparent in a lot of their music( especially their earlier albums).

This was a love song that James Hetfield (guitar/ vocals) wrote to his then-girlfriend while he was away on tour w/ Metallica... The other members were shocked that a love song was going on Metallica's 5th album in 1991 (the massive-selling 'black' album) and 'Nothing else matters' became a pop hit in 1992... Sadly, James and her broke up after the record was done... Metallica never made religious songs - they always made song bashing religious zealots because James lost his mom to cancer as a teen after she refused treatment... She was a devout Christian science follower who believed that 'God' would heal her through prayer and faith. That loss affected James Hetfield for the rest of his life... He wrote 'The God that failed' about his mom's misplaced faith... He wrote 'The Unforgiven' and "Dyers' eve" about his parents failing him in life (His dad left when he was a kid... He experienced a lot of abuse growing up and drove him to alcoholism).

The best songs mean something different for each person listening without negating the composer's original intent, and this is one of the greatest. Huge respect to you for opening yourself to new musical experiences. Love the fact that you're prepared to make yourself a little vulnerable by doing them completely blind. James wrote this song because he missed his gf at the time. I was in my first interracial relationship when this song came out so this song became our song. The black album, the album this song was on, was the first album that I got into The Mighty Met! I have been a lifetime fan since then. 💜 Also the naked pic was his gf. 😁

James had to relearn to sing and not shout. It is a beautiful song. You need to listen to their country and western song “Mama Said”

I first heard this at age of 14. Relationship song. That's what I thought. Mid 20s. God. Now. Government telling you how to live. I think they put this together to represent all those. I seen a video like 6yrs ago of James and Larus talking about why they left California and moved to Colorado. And it was politics.

My first three CD's were bought on mail order from a music magazine. -One of those deals where you made a cheap subscription and got 3 free cds... I chose Metallicas Black ALbum, AC/DC Ballbreaker and Absolute Music #4. Still consider them the root of my music taste in general! LOL

I love the way you think and experience tunes, you have an open mind. Try Led Zeppelin, Stairway to Heaven and Pink Floyd, Shine on you crazy diamond (about the lead singer that was hospitalised for mental health issues) one of the most beautiful songs about a lost friend.
