Yes. Crowley was not a Satanist, he was a Demonologist - the difference is rather important. Satanists (the ones who aren't either playacting, or using the name for what is actually an atheist philosophy of self-centrism (Hello, Anton LaVey)) _worship_ a figure they believe holds power over the Earth, in the hope of favours. Demonologists seek to _command_ demons to do their bidding, compelling and constraining them in the name of God and/or Christ, and with (often rather minor) bribes and threats. You can't be a demonologist without first accepting some form of Jewish, Christian and/or Muslim theology. Note I do not assert that any of what these people believe is objectively true, but what goes on in their heads determines how they interpret the world, and how they therefore choose to behave. The same is true of everyone, of course.

No Dude, 1 verse is Ozzy questioning Crowley’s sanity. He also presents him as someone who was a magic-based fraudster. 2 verse is as Ozzy putting forth that Aleister was not as impressive as he may have thought himself to be. 3 verse that Aleister Crowley is someone whom Ozzy does not look up to as an idol, role model or anything even remotely like that, Ozzy is implying something like fate ultimately having caught up him, and accordingly compensating him for all of his misdeeds, and that Aleister enjoyed using opium, Ozzy wasn't into that. 4 as someone who doesn’t understand the doctrine of Aleister Crowley, is questioning where exactly his teachings come from. Ozzy suggest that it came from some type of contentious source. This went on a lot in the 70s and 80s, people saying Oz was a satanist, if you listen to the words of his songs, it's the exact opposite

I don’t think Ozzy is praising Crowley in the song. The lyrics “what went on in your head?” “You’re lifestyle to me seemed so tragic “ “Did you think you were pure?” But there are true references about Mr Crowley, they did scatter his afterbirth ?? And he would sign off letters “Polemically yours” polemically being an aggressive attack on someone or their beliefs. Ozzy believes in Jesus and always wore a crucifix. But that's exactly what's dangerous when any Christians believe that everything is negative energy. For me, strict believers are often negatively loaded because they don't allow other opinions. I'm an atheist myself, I've never been even remotely religious, I grew up with metal. I discovered this song when I was 12 and loved it because I liked the tragic guitar solo so much, a masterpiece, unsurpassed to this day, I always didn't care what was being sung anyway. I usually didn't care much about the lyrics, I just care about the music most of the time. But satanism is more sympathetic to me. I love black metal. When I visited my cousin in the USA, she kept talking about the evil black clothing, about negative energy, and even invited a Christian rock musician, who was very nice by the way, but I thought, what's all that about? Are these people really that into it? that you think that as an atheist etc. you have negative energy? seriously?

Bob Daisley, the lyricist, isn't in this video. Daisley explained that he wrote the song in a way that questioned Crowley's actions. Tell me about “Mr. Crowley.” > That was Ozzy’s title, and it was obviously about Aleister Crowley. Because he was a satanist and into dark stuff and all that, I didn’t want to make a negative song. I wanted to make it a little bit like talking to Mr. Crowley and going, “What the f--k were you thinking? What were you doing? What went on in your head?” He used to sign his autograph “Polemically Aleister Crowley.” “Polemic” just means “controversial.” That’s why, at the end, I wrote, “polemically sent.”

i was a kid in the 70s and I saw Kiss and wanted to be a drummer, so I got a drum set when I was a kid about a couple years later I heard this song when I was about 11 been playing guitar ever since,. Randy changed my life. And my parents were hardcore Christians as well both my grandpas were preachers as well as their brothers. I remember having to sneak metal music. By my teen years I had Maiden, Ozzy, Kiss posters all over my walls my mom used to tell people my room was the gateway to hell. ha. But I actually had her listen to some of the songs with the lyrics and she was ok with it after that. My dad though still think it's satanic ha And this is NOT a love song for Mr. Crowley... you read the lyrics and that's what you think? It's basically an Anti-Crowley song. Randy was a child prodigy, he taught guitar at his moms music school in LA, he also helped for the band Quiet Riot but left to join Ozzy as QR was just a club band at those times and could not get signed a record deal. the bass player here was in QR as well by the time Randy left and when Ozzy needed a new bassist Randy called up Rudy (this guy here playing bass ). The drummer here is Tommy Aldridge one of the best rock drummers ever and one of the hardest hitting drummers in my opinion as well, he's 74 and still hits like he did in his 20's, but he played for Black Oak Arkansas, Gary Moore and Pat Travers before Randy talking him into joining Ozzy, he then left and went on to play for Whitesnake as well as the bassist Rudy. Rudy is not back with Quiet Riot and Tommy stayed with Whitesnake for quite some time. Also I know Randy was raised going to church, Ozzy I believe was raised Catholic. The drummer and bassist here are christians. Again this song is NOT satanic. It's actually kind of a head scratching question "who are you and why did you do the things you did". . The song is questioning Crowley's sanity. Ozzy is basically calling out Crowley as a "fraudster" and basically saying Crowley wasn't as impressive as Crowley thought he was.

Aleistar Crowley was such a fascinating figure. The cliff notes version is that he was a member of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn (a mystical society formed by a group of Freemasons, based heavily on the Order of the Rose Cross), but later formed a splinter group, the Ordo Templii Orientis (aka. Thelema) which leaned more into "dark" magick, though not Satanism per se, but because Crowley LOVED media attention so much, he played up his own evil reputation, even going so far as to invent his own form of numerology specifically designed to make himself come up in the system as the Beast of Revelations. For all his eccentricities, he was indirectly an inspiration to other occultists including L. Ron Hubbard (founder of Scientology), Gerald Gardener (founder of Wicca), and Anton LaVay (founder of The Church of Satan). Of course, most of the demonic and occult imagery around heavy metal artists was just aesthetic. Ironically, with all the "Satanic Panic" around heavy metal, one of the few hit songs from an actual Satanic band was just a peace-loving hippie song ("One Tin Soldier" by Coven).

Ozzy, in an interview once said that he didn't understand where some people could think he was a Devil worshiper. He mentioned how the great actor Vincent Price, who starred in many shocking, even disturbing (for their time), absolutely classic horror films in the 50's to at least the 70's, and probably later that that. He did voice over work for a couple of very famous musicians like Alice Cooper (Black Widow), and "The King of Poo" himself, Michael Jackson (Thiller). Anyway, Ozzy said that nobody thought that nobody believed that Vincent Price was a terrible, horrible, evil person like the characters that he played in films and on television. Mr.Price was even a Gourmet Ched. And yet Ozzy is known as "The Prince of Darkness. Black Sabbath got their name from an old Boris Karloff film of the same name. Ozzy has stated on many occasions that he is a Christian. His first guitarist post Sabbath was the phenomenally talented Randy Rhoads, who is seen on this video..Randy was a really, really nice person who, unfortunately died in a plane crash in Florida on March 19, 1982. He was only 25.I was in the 9th grade at a brand new school. Got the news when I got home from school that day. For me, it was what I think Don McLean was feeling when he penned 'American Pie". But I digress. I play guitar, since my big brother got me one for my 8th birthday. But when I bought "Blizzard of Ozz" in either late 1980 early 1981,it was around Christmas, it changed changed my life. I became the kid in "Juke Box Hero", playing until my fingers were bleeding. Quite often I would fall asleep with my guitar. I bet that I spent the better part of 7 months learning "Crazy Train" Every guitar player has a hero, mine was Randy Rhoads. Most of the guys who played were into Jimmy Page, Angus Young, and of course, Edward Van Halen, but not me. I loved this little skinny white guys playing, it really spoke to me. Randy's Magnum Opus though, was "Diary of a Madman". To my ears, it's a billion+ out of 10. You should check that song out, for sure!!! I always wonder about those guitar heroes that were taken from us, far too early, where would their talent level be today. Before arthritis all but took my guitar away from me, I could play stuff from cats like Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and of course, my own Patron Saint, Randy. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inducted Randy Rhoads a year or two ago as a contributor, and when Ozzy was inducted as a solo performer, In Ozzy's acceptance speech, Ozzy took the time to thank Randy and his wife Sharon. I was quite moved on by his words about Randy, saying that without Randy Rhoads, he didn't think that his career path would have worked out. Come to think of it, I don't think that Ozzy even mentioned any other guitarist by name... and he has had at least 3 all-time great guitar heroes in his solo band? As for "Mr. Crowley", I don't think that the song is celebrating Alistair Crowley, I think that Ozzy is telling a cautionary tale of playing with things that you don't understand can possibly end tragically. The man Crowley, was a kook, and ultimately, a charlatan. Kinda like most of the satanic possession/exorcism films, don't mess with Ouija boards, etc.

Whats up man! Happy Holidays! This is Ozzy with Randy Rhodes, RIP. Worth checking out some of Randy's story. Prolly a short video doc that'd be worthy of a watch. And Ozzy vs Sabbath was too different things really. Same, but different, lol.

Ozzy is not a satanist. This is not a song praising Alister Crowley. It’s more of a song questioning him as to why he was into dark shit, calling it all a bunch of bullsh*t (u fooled all the people with magic) and offering him the white horse, symbolic of the christian way out of the evil he’s into. anyway, r.i.p Randy. Got to see this band live and cherish the memory.

Just cuz Ozzy doesn't say "Crowley you are a bad man," doesn't mean he's in favor of him. Ozzy is taking a critical eye of the man's life and asking him what he really believed, and talking about how tragic his lifestyle was and offering for him to come to the side of Christianity ("won't you ride my white horse"). Wanted to know what he meant and how much was a lie vs true beliefs, being inquisitive, and being curious about the man aren't endorsements. Haven't you ever wondered what it must be like inside the minds of evil men?

Randy Rhoads is the reason why I learned to play guitar in the early 80s. I was 13 years old when he died in 1982. I wonder what would have been if he was still with us? You have to check out Ozzy Osbourne Diary of a Madman. Randy's classical guitar work is amazing

Hey BP, journey a little more into Ozzy's solo works. NO MORE TEARS, ORDINARY MAN (ft. Sir Elton John), ROAD TO NOWHERE, and PERRY MASON are all good songs to run with.

Ozzy left the band Black Sabbath in 1980. This is from his first solo album after leaving Black Sabbath. "Mr. Crowley" is a song about English occultist Aleister Crowley. Written by Ozzy Osbourne, guitarist Randy Rhoads and bass guitarist/lyricist Bob Daisley. It was released on Osbourne's debut solo album Blizzard of Ozz in September 1980 in the United Kingdom. A live version was released as a UK single in November 1980. In North America, the studio version was released as a single in 1981.

Absolutely denouncing Crowleys work and findings. This is probably Rhodes'most proficient, iconic and melodic guitar work ever. I love Ozzy... he is very much a God fearing man and always has been. I will say that Sabbath were my band growing up. But I always loved Ozzys vocals. I am a Dio guy at heart. But it's 1a and 1b for me

My favorite Ozzy song! Definitely not Satanic, occult or glorying Crowley. Just a story about his life and questioning why was he like that. I prefer Ozzy solo over Black Sabbath any day 🤘🏽🔥

Ozzy doesn’t exclusively write his own lyrics. Usually his bass players have a heavy hand in the lyrics from Sabbath through his solo career. Mr. Crowley was co-written by Randy Rhoda’s, Ozzy, & and bassist Bob Daisley. The song is more about the mystique that Crowley had. Jimmy Page of Zeppelin famously owned Crowley’s house, Boleskin Manor, on Loch Ness for several years.

It’s not a love song. I also think Ozzy is a Christian aha.
@Gigi_Unapologetic5 күн бұрын
I've always interpreted the song completely different. He asks if Crowley thinks he is pure, using his charm and magic in a tragic way, while holding nothing sacred tainting anything good. The White horse and saying "it's symbolic" was his way of saying you could never come into the light...

Ozzy didn't like Crowley in fact Ozzy is a devout Christian. The song came about because he came across an occult book and tarot card deck in studio. Crowley was a topic of discussion at the time. So he and the legendary Randy Rhodes wrote the song. Occult imagery was popular from the 1960's through the 1990's because of the popularity of Gothic imagery and stories like Conan the Barbarian. Want cool images Google Boris Vallejo, Julie Bell, and Frank Frazetta who were popular artists of the time.

That song was inspired by Aleister Crowley's book Diary of a Drug Fiend that Osbourne had read, and a deck of tarot cards found in the studio as recording of the album was commencing. Crowley was an English occultist and ceremonial magician who had founded the Thelemite religion in the early 20th century.

**NOT** a 'love song' to Alastair Crowley, but a **rebuke**-- calling him out on his BS, and basically saying "when do ya think you gonna get that call from Satan?"..... And I sincerely hope you fully appreciated that solo performed by St. Randall... He was taken too soon by the forces of ebb and flow... Please accept my condolences for your having been indoctrinated into the world of the 'invisible man in the sky' who never seems to be around when you need him, or his son, who is equally insufficient at helping out, even though they are **supposed** to be one and the same -- (??!!?? WTF ??!!??)... Morality is doing what is RIGHT regardless of what you are TOLD; 'religion' is doing what you are TOLD regardless of what is RIGHT-- And if you think Slipknot invented 'vertical drumming', you need to search for the video of Tommy Lee [Mötley Crüe] playing his drums while **FULLY ROTATING** , kit and all!! Nothing is more near 'impossible' than convincing someone to get out of the 'Matrix' they are in and face **REALITY** (but I still try!) Blessed Be, & Peace! 🙏☮

What always gets me is Randy... When you hear the album version, it sounds like he played it faster and it was slowed down in production... Then you see him play it live... You can see his mastery first hand... You can see his classical influences in living color.

I am a very proud Catholic and have listened to Ozzy since I was in grade school. Randy Rhoads on guitar was phenomenal! I personally think he was the greatest of all time, and I think of you listen to more solo Ozzy you’ll see how amazing his career is. I do like it better than Sabbath, but still love the old school Sabbath stuff

I was in 10th grade, sitting in front of the JROTC door, waiting for 1st period when someone (sadly I don't remember names anymore) came up with the new Ozzy album (cassette tape) so we all ditched class and went to somebody's house to smoke pot and jam to Ozzy. Sigh... I miss the early 80's...

It is Thelema rather than Satanic but that is a distinction that is more for in esoteric group. It sums up the expectations of following his new religion/spirituality that promised alot of new freedom. As with many of the spiritual paths there are a lot of high hopes and often disappointment when people come back down with their feets on the ground. No matter how problamatic he was he tried to cut (culturally) through the straithjacket that religion gave people with represseting the opposite of that moral high ground. Also inside the esoteric groups he was in, The Golden Dawn he tried to cut through the ranks without following the protocols and was kicked out, and litterly down the stairs by the poet W.B. Yeats. To place further context: Crowley did not only inspire Ozzy for a while but other bands too. He is on the cover of the Beatles album Sgt Pepper for instance.

Ozzy put an incredible band together. Randy made history with the 2 Ozzy albums before he passed. Both Ozzy and Sabbath kickstarted the 80s with a new definition of heavy metal.
