I live in a SMALL one bedroom apartment with my husband. We put risers on our bed and store under our bed. I put my bedroom TV stand caddy-corner and store stuff behind it. I have a bench next to my front door with storage inside. We use an extra long ottoman for a coffee table (we put an oversized wood tray on it) but we store stuff inside. Under my computer desk I have a black storage bin (my desk is black so it blends in and people can't see what I have inside) and that is filled with stuff. I have a cute stack of vintage suitcases in a corner of my bedroom. All of them are filled with stuff. You can make it work. Just some suggestions I thought I'd throw out there.

Here's a hint for your freezer - get tote bags from Dollar Tree one for each category of item you will be freezing. Beef in one, pork in one of another color/design so forth. Makes it a lot easier to get the item you are looking for and you don't have to remove a lot of packages to get to the bottom - just reach in grab the handles and take the tote out to get what item you want. Also butter and cheese can be frozen so stock up when they are on sale. Y'all are doing a great job and thank you for sharing.

That wall. If the spots are water damage/mold, use Kilz(?). It is a paint /mold killer. Step-mother used it after fire/smoke/water damage. You got a new freezer- do all that flour! 3 days in the freezer (in ziplocs to keep out moisture), then 24hrs in frig. And the rice, oatmeal, cream of wheat. Anything that has NOT been cooked. Start slow, just a two week supply and build it up like Pegi & Don did.
Hi guys, some other foods to consider stocking assuming you eat them. Instant mashed potato, Dried Milk, some brands taste fine others not so good, Nestles tastes fine. Tinned Ghee ( Clarified Butter, ) Corn flour, Porridge oats, Dried fruits e.g. Blueberrys., Gravy /Sauce / Curry granules, tinned / dried beans / peas Tinned soups that can if necessary be added to Pasta / Rice to make a good meal. Save up for a large, non defrost chest freezer. They're around $600 at Home Depot. Even though there are only two of you. There is just my husband and myself here. You come upon sales for roasts such that you can freeze as well as what you grow.
@oldtimerlee88204 жыл бұрын
Do take into consideration what you'll do if the grid goes down. How will you keep the meat frozen? Generator? Solar power? For how long? We have lost power for 2+ weeks here due to ice storms and hurricanes. When we lose power, we also lose our water as we have a well with a pump. While we have means to convert raw water into potable water, if our creek water is muddy, that may not be a good option for canning to save the food. We do have a stand alone freezer. I store lard, tallow and ghee in it to prolong their shelf life. Keep frozen foods that are not suitable for canning. Keep some meats for roasting and grilling. It is good for temporary storage of meats that can be put into mason jars. With the holidays approaching, hopefully we'll have some good sales on turkey, soon. Buy what your budget allows and keep in the freezer until time to can it. Same thing for fruits and vegetables that will be either canned or dehydrated for long term storage. Shelf life of most frozen foods is much shorter than their shelf life when canned or dehydrated. Generally it's from a few weeks to about a year, unless packaged for longer term using vacuum sealing. When stocking a freezer, keep in mind how long foods can be kept there. It's sad to throw away good food because of freezer burn. (sigh) We also make block ice in our freezer. Using 2 liter soda bottles, this give us both ice and cold drinking water. That's a blessing during hurricane season. This block ice helps prolong the life of things in the refrigerator, too. When preparing for a storm, setup an ice chest with block ice. Transfer all applicable items from the refrigerator to a separate freezer. When the grid goes down, transfer everything that was left into the ice chest. That may be enough to save refrigerated items long enough for the power to be restored. Just some thoughts that may be useful. Perhaps buying a smaller freezer and investing in canning equipment if you don't already have it.
@debbytomlinson99704 жыл бұрын
I'm glad you know to freeze flour but you should freeze ALL grains. Short story I have had to throw away jiffy mix brown gravy mix large container of ranch powder from Sams- all unopened, that developed some kind of moth and larvae in them. I suggest putting cardboard on the floor beneath the water. Concrete can seep chemicals into the water. Also seasonings, candles(dollar tree prayer candles are cheap and burn long). Also I buy ground turkey, chicken, pork and beef. I brown them up with onions but no other seasonings(so you can make it into whatever you want). Then I let them cool and portion them out in baggies according to what you need for a meal. Freeze flat with a paper towel between them until frozen so they dont stick together. I like to do this so if you loose power it's already cooked and you can make into whatever you want and you already have the onions in the meat. In every day life having meat already cooked is a blessing. Throw in pan add spaghetti sauce and bam done for those nights you need a fast meal. Garbage bags, clean any bottles from juice or water or soda and fill with tap water for flushing toilets if power outage or washing dishes

Love you two!❤️ Two things, unless someone else has already said so: If you’re worried about items falling off those shelves, like in an earthquake, tie some twine around this shelf supports and along the front and sides of each shelf. I can’t tell if that is a cement floor but, I assume so. Don’t store your water containers directly on it. The cement will leach into those containers. Perhaps even a skid can be placed underneath to ensure there’s no contact. I think you’re doing wonderfully.

Y'all are doing a great job! Just keep doing you, everybody else is already taken. 😊 I would like to make a couple of suggestions; Go to Lowe's or home depot, and get food grade buckets and lids. They are much less expensive than Amazon. I don't shop at home depot but I know they have them. We just got more buckets at Lowe's yesterday and they were $3.98 for the bucket, $2.58 for the regular lid. If you are registered for the military discount, you get 10% off. The gamma lid is $7.58 but unless you plan to store for 5 or more years, the regular lids work just fine. We actually have beans and lentils, and a few other things stored in food grade buckets, that we have had for 20 years and they are fine. No mylar, no oxygen absorbers,no gamma lids, no problems. I'm glad you got the 2.5 gallon glad bags. When you put your flour and things in your buckets, use your bags for your crackers and small boxes to keep them fresh longer. You may want to store your jiffy mix in a bucket. Just take the little bags out of the boxes and keep one empty box in the top for directions. You can always use flax seed as an egg substitute. Good luck and God bless! 👍 Edited to add; don't forget to get a bucket opener. You should be able to get one on Amazon or even at Lowe's or home depot.

Get some heavy duty shopping bags, the ones you buy at the supermarket. Put pork in one, beef in another, and chicken in one. It helps you to find what you are looking for in the freezer. You can just lift stuff out in one go to get to the underneath. This is just a suggestion tho, you may want to divide things in a different way, or not want to do it at all, but it does make it easier than digging through everything to get what you are looking for. 🐨

You two are such a delight to watch. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and inviting us into your home. Its so hard to know how much to store, isn't it? A breakdown in the supply chain might be a few months of no food, where another great depression might be a decade, like the last one. But, one thing we can all agree on, is the food will never be cheaper than it is today. All this food will cost at least 30% more next year and that's IF WE DONT HAVE A FOOD SHORTAGE, ( which I do see coming) great job on your pantry. I am so happy to watch it grow. On that note... our fridge was getting old, and the idea of it breaking down AFTER a major shopping trip freeked me out. So... we invested in a NEW fridge AND a small generator.. And some extra gas. NOW we sleep much better. Bottom Line: Do what you can... have a plan.

If you buy ( or even already have) silicone cupcake cups, crack an egg in each cup and place in a cupcake pan, flash freeze them in your deep freezer. Peel them out of the liners into a labeled zip bag and store on your freezer. Just thaw and use like regular in your recipes. Sure fresh is better but in a pinch I'm happy to have them!

You need to get all your dry goods into buckets... they can attract critters (mice and bugs). Canned goods are being limited.. there is a can shortage. Canned meat is hard to find where I live. You have a good start. Don't forget to get other things you need, bandaids, aspirin,hygiene items, batteries, flashlights etc.. I get my buckets at WINCO. Walmart Bakery used to sell their food buckets to customers (cheap). Check with them.

I just bought the same freezer and seen the last one of that brand. I looked it up online and it was not on sale online at Walmart, only in person sale. The sales associates said that brand is really popular. Please store more emergency water and rice. They are predicting food shortages due to the weather affecting the harvest this year. Australia is due to run out of rice by December. Our corn harvest was damaged this year and not sure what else.

There are water stabilizers ( water preserver)that you add to your water jugs that keep it good for 5 years. Buy on Amazon
@oldtimerlee88204 жыл бұрын
Sodium hypochlorite = liquid chlorine bleach. Adding bleach in recommended proportions is used around the world to make water safe to drink. When added to a container and the container is tightly capped, the water is safe to drink as long as the container remains sealed. Nothing can get into the container to cause contamination. Best storage container is glass as it doesn't break down the way many plastics will over an extended period of time. Leaching of plastics can be a separate concern from bacterial contamination. The type of plastic is important. Disposable water jugs have a very limited shelf life as they are designed to be biodegradable in land fills. I've had them fail and leak before reaching their "Best By" date. Choose plastic containers designed specifically for longer term water storage.

Y'all are doing great! Keep it up! Don't forget the dollar tree, you can load up if you have a big store in your area, and usually they have no limits on purchases. Glad you took my suggestion on the propane stove! Just don't wait too long. The reason the two burner is selling out is because everyone is buying them up. Soon the one burner will be limited, because that'll be all that's left. People are paying attention! One more idea. Take a sharpie, and write the use by date on the front of the boxes or cans of all your food. That way you can rotate before it goes bad. Like I said, I just found y'all, and love you both. Y'all are precious 🙂

For extra storage, we changed up the coat closet under the staircase. We removed the coat storage rack at the front of the closet. Then installed shelves along both sides. It tripled our storage space for food preps, especially since the closet ran the length of the staircase. Edit-it is also a perfect location because it is cooler and darker than the rest of your house so it is a perfect place for long term food storage or food rotation.

Suggestion...have more ways to cook. Rocket Stove, Solar oven, and good ole charcoal. Learning how to can will help in case of a power outage to save your freezer food. Canning is an investment and supplies are hard to come by right now, but something to consider.
@oldtimerlee88204 жыл бұрын
Better to can applicable foods before the grid goes down. Depending the circumstances there may not be enough time nor water to can all the foods in a loaded freezer. Especially in hot weather. Agree 100% about learning to can. It will help reduce reliance on a power hungry/needy appliance. Since canning supplies are usually seasonal, plan to stock up on what's needed early in the 2021 season.

You two are doing great. I'm so very proud of you. You are hitting all the essentials. Freeze dried foods when you get a chance. Mountain House is the most delicious. Puts you in a SET & GO mode of prepping. Takes the worry out of rotating your food. A Chef Magic 2 or 3 burner propane camping stove from Cabela's is the way to go IMHO. Candles. Lots of garbage bags for when the toilets stop flushing. Place the kitchen bags in toilet, dump when you need to. First aid kit...make your own. Yes, a BIBLE. Hey contact me. You have a great basement there, but that window has to go. How about digging it out to turn into a bunker if your water table isn't too high.

Amen you can’t afford to not be prepared to feed your family. I was brought up Seventh Day Adventist, folks can live a very healthy, tasty life around the dinner table without meat. My husband has learned the past 45 years he will survive without a hunk of meat at every meal 🤣. When we were bringing up our girls I learned how to make ground beef go farther by using oats. Throw a few handfuls in meatloaf to stretch it out, same thing with meatballs, Salisbury steak, lost of ground beef based meals. I hope you both realize what a blessing you are to so many people. We have always had a very deep pantry, it’s the way we were brought up. No matter what life threw at us we would Always sit down as a family, thank the Lord for our food and keep a eye out for the next sale at the grocery store

Be sure to dump and wash those water bottles. Rinse really well and refill. After about 6 months it gets gross and stinky. Also, don't store directly on concrete. Lay a small sheet of wood under it. The concrete breaks down the plastic and ruins the water. I am so loving your videos and am so blessed by seeing the two of you as such an awesome team! Working so hard to make this happen. Keep em coming! Such good information!

Since u have your freezer, you can crack eggs in plastic cupcake trays and store them in freezer bags once the freeze. Jamerrel Stewart has a video on freezing eggs. So pleased how fast your stocking. The rule of thumb is 60 lbs of dry goods per person per year. The 25 pound bags of flour at Walmart is reasonably priced. I believe u should also stock heirloom seeds for planting. I recommend rare seeds.com or Hoss tools. Make sure you have cast iron for fire cooking. Have enough to get yourselves through a grow season next summer. Many blessings 💙💛🙏
