Don and I prepare for a possible food shortage by stocking up on foods with long shelf lives. We have purchased a storage shelf and placed it in our basement and will continue to add more.

It's not serious right now, at least in my area. The shelves are 90% stocked in Walmart, Pubix and Winn Dixie. I do notice a trend in stocking more brand names, however, as they bring a bigger price. I haven't read or heard from anyone online or in person that there is a "serious" food shortage anywhere, at least for right now. Prices are going up, but that's not a shortage.

That's the problem with people. They think since we live in good ole' America shit can't happen. Especially a food shortage or God forbid the dreaded F word FAMINE 😳😳😳😳 Let me say this. If this year hasn't taught you to be prepared then I don't know what else can convince you! No one knows what's around the corner so if you can stock some things away to be prepared then do so. I have a strong feeling things are not going back to the way it was and we are in for some rough times ahead of us. BE PREPARED!!

I think you should get instant coffee and powdered creamer, you should have what you want and coffee will be like money. Also flour, sugar, Complete Pancake mix, canned chicken, pasta, tomato sauce, hard candy, white vinegar, baking soda and oatmeal will come in handy. I don't understand why people think that having an emergency supply is crazy. We've been under restrictions for over 4 months and in a wealthy country like America its still hard to get Rubbing alcohol, Disinfectant wipes, and Disinfectant spray!!! That's a red flag letting us know that we should be prepared to be self reliant at least until 2021 but maybe beyond. Don't forget First Aid/Medical items like band aids, gauze, ibuprofen, antacid and vitamins, Hygiene/Personal/Household items like toothpaste, toothbrushes, hand soap, body wash, shampoo, deodorant, hand sanitizer, feminine items, dish soap. Extras: Masks, Nitrile gloves, flashlights, matches/lighters, candles, batteries.....Boullion cubes, hot sauce, soy sauce, worcestershire sauce, curry powder, salt and pepper will help the rice taste better,

@@pegianddon I would add: Grow something! Pick up a few bags of seed: tomatoes, cucumbers, squash or whatever you like. Most stuff can be grown in pots. Depending on what type of 'room' your dealing with, you can plant directly into the ground or grow it like you grow Indoor plants (you'll need soil and bag of good fertizier). Actually potatoes (growing your own is best) can be stored in a DARK COOL TO COLD room. Certain grocery store potatoes can be used to grow more (in ground or pots). You can just put it up in your basement until you need it but tour KZbin tutorials so you make sure you are educated on HOW to grow stuff and when. No you don't have to go 'crazy' with it, it's a backup for if stuff really gets 'stupid' with this pandemic. Plenty of 'Homesteaders' & 'Gardeners' are filming BASIC gardening for beginners and those who have small spaces (if you don't have a yard). Y'know, back in January I got this urge to stock up on dry goods & baking supplies. I got 2 kinds of flour, bread pans, and even yeast-- I'd never even made bread before! Then the shortage hit, and thankfully we had plenty of food. I even made bread for my mom, and we were okay. Now I try to keep a surplus of canned goods, flours, and dry pasta. I try to tell myself that it isn't greedy, it's caution. Did you know there is a shelf stable milk? I got mine at the Dollar Tree. Now I do need to keep a backup of detergents and dish soaps; I hadn't thought about that! Love your demeanor. You two are so cute!

Let me tell you. my mom and dad were born at the end of the great depression 1937 and 1939. they were born to poor families. you know what they taught me? "Hope for the best prep for the worst" do you know how many crappy situations my family made it through? relatively comfortably? because my parents planned ahead? my parents taught me to play "what if".. We live in nw Ohio. about 15-ish years ago we had an ice storm come through. it was a very narrow storm but it knocked the area on its ass. me and my kids were living in all electric apartment. we never had to leave the apartment. we had three hot meals a day, we had books, we had board games, & radio cuz I had gotten a solar/crank radio for my birthday a few years back because I knew it would come in handy. that son of a gun still works! We had a week of just fun time. the kids played in the snow. we had a blast!! whereas a lot of other people in town had to go to the shelters. there was one family that had a freaking fireplace in their house but they went to a shelter 🙄 it was so funny cuz when my daughter went back to school she told them what we done and how we didn't have to leave our comfy home. she got cool points for it!! My mom was living in town luckily her electric never went out. all three of us kids live in the same town as her. my mom was tickled pink because we all survived comfortably in different ways. my brother had a fireplace in his basement. so he just hung out in the basement and took care of stuff which kept their pipes from freezing. my sister went out and bought a generator and the required fuel to keep it going. me? I had a kerosene heater and for a two bedroom apartment that sucker got hot!! we had to turn it down! I had jury rigged away to cook food over several tea light candles. I collect oil lamps because they're beautiful and useful! me and mine never had a problem with that ice storm.. because we prepared for it. all of us. because of what mom and dad had taught us. so ma'am you and yours? you do what you think is best for your household!! like I said "prep for the worst hope for the best!!"

I feel the same way ! I live in california and I'm only 24 and my husband thinks I'm crazy. I did go on Amazon and buy about 300 dollars worth of stuff; like a gas stove, life straws that filter water up to 1000 gallons, dehydrated food, weather radio, 7 day burning candles, and a 200 piece first aid kit. My next is stocking up on canned foods and bottled water. I use a company called who gives a crap for toilet paper and it's a HUGE box which last me at least 6 months.

I find that so many canned vegetables and prepared foods simply have too much sodium in them. I swell up and don't feel good. For those high sodium foods, it's best to keep them to a minimum if you can, and wash canned vegetables under running water. Dried foods are best, I think, because they usually don't have a bunch of additives. Think simply, think basic.

That's a good start. I've been prepping hard the last 4 years. Floods, droughts, fires, weather and civil unrest have me worried. Yes, you will need more shelves. I have 8 inside with food and cleaning supplies, candles, propane and butane. I have another 6 in an outdoor shed that is insulated and that has my canning supplies and camping gear and hand tools (electric tools are on shelves inside). I have 2 solar powered generators which we have used during power outages we've experienced. I've just added my first shelf at my mom's house. She will get more. Now my suggestions to you. Please watch on KZbin "Artisan Breads with Steve"; after watching his videos I bought his book and we haven't bought bread in over 2 years. I bake a loaf every week now. Be careful with the Mac & Cheese. I try to rotate my preps and the last box of Mac & Cheese I made tasted funky. We ate it but it was not the best. The "best by" date was still a month away. Be careful about canned tomatoes. Tomatoes have a lot of acid and they can make a can swell and even burst. I had one pop in my pantry. Re-package your rice and dried beans in glass jars or mylar bags with oxygen absorbers. You should also keep your ramen in plastic buckets with lids, preferably Gamma Lids. Even food in mylar bags should be kept in buckets. You need to protect your food from bugs and mice. I'm not saying you have these pests but if times get tough they will find your food. I hope this helps and if you want to ask me something, please do not hesitate. I'm glad you're prepping.

There are lots of recipes on line to make quick breads, muffins, sweet rolls, etc. with it, and of course pancakes and waffles. I’ve been prepping for ten years but have never known life without food storage. I’m glad you’ve started preparing for emergencies. Don’t stop just because you run out of cupboard space. Store under beds, put an extra shelf in your closets. I’m so glad you are ensuring the welfare of your family. You might want to get some powdered milk and yeast. Pop your grains and beans into the freezer for a few days to kill any pantry bug eggs. You can crack open eggs and freeze them in baggies or Muffin cups (silicon ). If you ever can’t get yeast you can use baking soda and make soda bread while you catch wild yeast or get a sourdough starter going. Keep preparing and stay safe. Oh and remember there’s a difference between a best before date and an expiration date.

Good video, I’m glad to see you guys are also ramping up the security aspect of preparedness. A few ideas, first once you get to your 3 month goal, take a look at freeze dried foods. It’s more expensive but has a longer shelf life, that goes for coffee also. Secondly, invest in a Foodsaver vacuum. You can break your rice, beans, sugar and flour into smaller units just in case a rodent get into your storage. Prepping follows the rule of 3’s. You can survive 3 days without water, 3 weeks without food. One is none and two is one. You mention your family, get them involved also. Make a monthly list of items they can purchase to help build your supplies. It could be as simple as buying flour and yeast or whatever so that they can get into a preparedness mind set it. Just a few thoughts! Looking forward to more videos!

Hi my main tip is to put a board of some sort under your liquids to keep them off the concert flooring. Concert contains acids and your bottles will not hold up for a long period of time same with drinking water you don’t want that leaking into your drinking water. I might would also add popcorn which will store for many years and a great snack for the kids. I could go on and on but those are what came to mind first. I’ve done this for many years and if you have any questions feel free to ask. Great video to a great start !!

We have had a working prepper pantry for years, I didn't know that was what it was called but it is. We always have enough food to last us anywhere between 3 to 6 months and maybe longer. We have been adding to that lately. I have videos on my channel if you want to see what we are doing and the reasons we do it, I have lots of hauls on there. I have more videos coming as well. You might get some ideas about some things you might want to get. I am not a professional but I do what we do because I want to have enough food and other things for us. We buy things we know we like even if it is something we don't eat all the time, like processed things. I am going to be doing a video soon on dehydrating potatoes but if you don't have a dehydrator you can use your oven to dehydrate some things. You said if we had ideas you would like to know and that is the easiest way for me to tell you. If you want to still use the Tide and Snuggle you could mix it with the cheaper detergent and softener. I would say get some comfort foods and drinks, like your coffee, so you don't get to where you are miserable. Baking bread is rewarding. Keep your yeast in the freezer so it has a longer life. You could also get some buckets from Home Depot and buy a Gamma lid there for them. They have seals in them so things last longer. Thank you for sharing and I'm sorry this is so long.

I've got 6 children at home, 2 young adults working, and they don't mind helping out. Continue to stock up while you can. May I suggest a few things? Get some white food grade buckets with the tops from Walmart to store your beans and rice in, get more water, crackers to go with those Vienna sausages, spices, and I know you said you won't be stocking up on coffee, but it can offer some warmth and comfort when needed, just like a hot cup of cocoa or tea. Just something to consider.😊 A butane stove to heat your food up with, along with cans of butane, just in case the power goes out. That's all I can think of for now.

I've been prepping ever since that panic buying in March/April. If you can pick up some packs of bacon ends, you can use those to flavor your beans and to flavor soups and stuff. Also, if you add an egg to ramen, it adds protein. I think what we're all going to have to figure out should we get into a bad situation, is how to ration our foods to make them last like we need them to. I used a lot of my stimulus check to get stocked up. I have very limited storage space, but I'm packing it out. Being prepared is good no matter what. I've been hearing people say to put their flour into the freezer for a week to kill off any bugs. I've had bugs get into my rice, so I always keep that in the fridge. Anyhow, sounds like you are doing great, and thank you Don for your service to our country. I just subscribed.

So it’s a 6 months for us. Thank you guys for your service to this greatest country on earth. Food shortages is coming... we are lucky to be able to prep for a hobby. China 🇨🇳 under socialism is in deep doo doo controlling even how much to eat now. Even 💦 water to the poor village now will be charged and these people can’t even afford to eat. Let alone prep. So now they have to choose between food or water. At least us Americans are and can be food strong in that sense with independence not all dependent on gov. Huggs. Great vlog.

You have a nice start there, Pegi. However, you should buy what you already eat and use for your storage and rotate through. This includes your laundry detergent. Don't buy something you haven't ever used before. You may find that someone is allergic to it. Contact dermatitis is no fun, especially in a stressful situation. While making bread can be fun, biscuits whip up a whole lot faster! And so does flat bread and tortillas. Just something to keep in mind, especially if you have a house full of hungry folks. Great job on your "insurance policy"!!! You're ahead of a lot of folks.
