When considering the stage, and it being the defining moment of that WC tournament by arguably the greatest international football team in history, and as an ideal of what the sport can be, the nonchalance and impudence of that pass into space for Carlos Alberto to put the exclamation point of their mastery of the game, is football at it highest point.

He played before my time but still. Watching the old clips of Pele making football an art at the world cup. That made me fall in love in this beautiful sport and pick up a ball myself as a small child. Can't exactly say I had a nearly as impressive career with playing in the 3 tier of Norwegian fottball as a highlight. 😆 But it shows that Pele's influence is global, even decades after he hang up his boots. In the 1958 world cup, Pele was 17 yrs old and playing in a team that was dominating. His goals came in the sf and final when Brazil was winning comfortably and the demoralised opposition didnt want to mark a 17 yr old. But what happened in the next 12 years is grossly misunderstood. Against popular belief, Pele actually didnt have much of an impact on international football. He got injured in the first game in 1962 world cup and didnt play the rest of the games. Brazil won the world cup without him, just goes to show that that Brazilian team was special and Pele just benefited from playing alongside great players. Then in 1966 world cup, Brazil got eliminated at the group stage. Yes the great Pele couldnt even get his national team to clear the group stage. After 1966, Pele dejected at not being able to replicate his (fortuitous) heroics of 1958 decided to retire. Then in 1970, when Pele saw that Brazil had again managed to build a great team consisting of the Jairzinho, Tostao, Rivelino and Gerson, he jumped at the opportunity and joined the national team again. In 1970, he scored goals against relatively weaker teams like Romania and Czech and then didnt do anything in the crucial KO matches. People unnecessarily hyped his every move like the famous rounding the keeper in the sf where instead of scoring an easy goal he tried to outsmart the keeper and ended up missing an open goal. It was the other attacking players mentioned abovewho dragged Brazil to the final. And then in the final like his protegee Ronaldo, he scored an easy tapin from 2 yards (notice how the defender marking him didnt even jump). Brazil won that game 4-1, I urge you to watch the other goals in that match, specially the screamer from outside the box and you'll realize how Pele again hogged the limelight for nothing (just like Ronaldo would RM while Ramos, Bale scored crucial, classier goals). So to summarize, Pele got lucky in the 1958 world cup, didnt do anything for the next 12 years (supposedly his prime) and then played in a great Brazilian team in 1970 and hogged the limelight. If he is regarded as the GOAT by some for these world cup wins, people need to check their facts.

One thing everyone is so consumed by in considering the greatest of all time is how many awards and trophies a player has won. Not taking into account there are more Cup competitions these days than ever before. It's also coming down to stats and numbers too much and they are all well and good until you take into account they are often padded out by the fact that there are more matches played and had no significance on the outcome of the match because your team was already several goals up. Even 30 years ago no one really cared about any two stats other than how many goals a player scored and how few goals a keeper conceded. Now you get meaningless running stats that look impressive until you realise that player did nothing to impact the game. Pele never bragged about any of that while playing or after and unlike other he didn't just changed the way people played in one way but many ways.

I had the good fortune to see Pele play twice in 1977. I was living in Hawaii then. The first match was a friendly with the Japanese national team. Pele was with the NY Cosmos in the old NASL. They thrashed them 6-1 and Pele scored three goals. The second time was NY Cosmos at The Hawaiians. The Cosmos won 2-1 and he didn't score anything. I remember reading about him first in the Guinness Book of World Records. It was common knowledge that he was special. I live in the greater San Francisco area now and we have lots of Latin American immigrants in the area. I love watching their eyes light up when I tell them that I got to see him in person twice.

Nice job remembering how Brazil's championships back in the 1960s were the absolute pinnacle of football ... NOT EUROPE. People often say "Pelé never played in Europe, Pelé played against farmers, weak opposition" ... so thank you for remembering that EVERY SINGLE PLAYER on those 4 WC rosters, from 1958 to 1970, played in Brazil. Three world cups out of 4 (should have been 4 out of 4 if 1966's WC wasn't plagued by brutal tackling) , and all of those champions were playing here. Rivellino, Gerson, Jairzinho, Tostao, Vava, Amarildo, Nilton Santos, Djalma Santos, GARRINCHA, Clodoaldo, Carlos Aberto, Zagallo ... ALL of those legends played in Brazil. And several of them in the Sao Paulo state championship. It is absolutely NO exaggeration to say that the Paulista championship in the 1960s, with Pelé's Santos, Rivellino's Corinthians, Ademir da Guia's Palmeiras, and Canhoteiro's Sao Paulo, that championship was WAY harder and more filled with talent than what La Liga is TODAY. And Pelé was the absolute ruler and KING of every single BR championship played. Santos by the way only won two Libertadores titles (followed by the 2 Intercontinental Titles) because the Libertadores Cup back then was also plagued with murderous tackling and slimy refereeing favouring ARG and URU clubs. Santos preferred to tour around the world to make more money (decided not to play the 1966 Libertadores). So ... yeah ... the "Pelé didn't play in Europe" argument is just nonsense. Just as Messi, Ronaldo, Maradona or Ronaldinho, Pelé played against the best in the world of his time, and ruled them all.

This video perfectly sums up exactly why I think Pele is the greatest of all time. Often in the debate on greatest footballers ever, a lot of people actually make a lot of arguments better suited to who is the BEST footballer of all time and I get rather annoyed by that. They tend to focus on stats or trophy cabinets, and while there is a genuine place for those things, for me, the best will always be better eventually. As scary as that sentence sounds given how brilliant the likes of Messi and Ronaldo are now, they will be bettered at some point. Maybe not in the next 10 years or even the next 100, but it will happen at some point. So when it comes to true greatness, we need a different yard stick to go by. To demonstrate this let me change to a different sport to really illustrate this better. Question: Who is the greatest high jumper of all time? As in who is the most significant/most important high jumper ever? If you answer that question with anyone other than Dick Fosbury, I reserve the right to think you don't know what you're talking about. He literally reinvented the sport by coming up with the Fosbury Flop. Ever since then, pretty much everyone adopted that technique because of how revolutionary it was. Now, is Dick Fosbury the best high jumper ever? Almost certainly not. He wasn't even the best in his day let alone by today's standards. Once other people worked out how to do the Fosbury Flop, they were better at it than him. He won the Olympics once purely on the fact that he had a much better technique than anyone had even thought of. And this for me is what greatness really boils down to. Not just what you do during your career in the sport itself, but in how doing it that way impact the sport as a whole off the pitch for generations to come. That's why I'm always very very pleased to see when this channel shows love for the greatest goalkeeper of all time, Lev Yashin. Like Dick Fosbury, his revolutionised football. He practically invented the sweeper keeper role and took charge of his back line of defenders unlike anyone else. That exactly how everyone does goalkeeping now. Defenders have to change how they played to accommodate for new styles of keepers. Strikers and attacking forwards and managers are forced to have to rethink how to play this game because of people like Lev Yashin. There are extremely few players of any sport anywhere that can claim to have literally changed the sport they play because they were that good. (n.b. personally I think it would be difficult to justify Lev Yashin as the greatest footballer ever since he didn't score goals and that's what wins games, but nevertheless, in the greatest ever discussion I think it's always a name that has to come up at least for a bit, and I always die a little bit inside when people fail to do so.) It's similar to why I'll always think that George Best is one of the best ever. He was told he was the best player in the world by Pele himself and was the influence on Maradonna growing up, and that itself leads to countless number of youngsters wanting to play like that. And I suspect in the following years after Messi and Ronaldo retire we're gonna see the impact of their influence so massively it's gonna weird to go back and look at old footage of football before them. Similar to when you look at football footage from before 1954. I always get saddened by the idea that the Hungarian side of 1954 didn't win that world cup over Germany when they were the ones that first started to play what we might consider "modern/total" football and I have a huge amount of respect for that. So when you look at Pele, who was better than everyone else at the time, won the biggest trophies you could ever win multiple times, and actually changed how people saw the game of football for the all generations that followed, all before anyone else (at least in terms of what we consider modern football), I think he will be seen as the greatest ever, or at the very least the most significant.

As an 11 year old in 1966 I like the rest of the nation was ecstatic when England won the World Cup, but felt we were deprived of something when Pele was brutally kicked out of the tournament (at my beloved Goodison, where I had great pleasure in watching Alan Ball light up the stadium) by Bulgaria and Portugal (and doubly disappointed that another icon, Eusebio, seemed content to witness the crimes of his team-mates. Four years later though England went out after surrendering a 2-0 advantage to West Germany, it was more than compensated for by Pele and the whole Brazil team’s exhilarating performances. You gave short shrift one of Pele’s accomplishments - he popularized soccer in North America. I get that non-North Americans are often very contemptuous of North America in general and soccer specifically but he made a deeply unpopular sport into a top 5 sport to about 425million people. I grew up in the sixties. as a kid i loved to play foorball, often playing two or three hours after school each day and nine or ten hours on Saturdays and Sundays. i had no interest in watching it, thinkig it a boring game to watch, when it was the world cup final in 1966 i went out and played football with some mates whilst everyone else watched. In 1970 I had broken a toe and could not play. I ended up watching, the Brazillian team and in particular Pele, showed me that it is a beautiful game. he was the beatin heart, soaring soul, and calculating brain of that team. and was as you so rightly say past his best. Since then i watch as much football as i can and Brazil at the world cup is always a highlight of the year to me. we can all thank pele for the globalization and beautification of our beloved game. I am a tough no nonsense type of bloke, but of course I have tears in my eyes as i write this. For me there is no discussion he is the GOAT. Thanks Alfie and keep up the good work

Not much people outside Brasil know this, but Pele was the goalkeeper for Santos in four diferent occasions. In one of them in 59, making the opening goal for Santos... After the goalkeeper was injuried, he assumed the position. Making at least five important, and difficult saves. Leading Santos to a 4x2 win. And was the "Real" goalkeeper who took the goals. In the four ocasions pele didnt took any. And some people still wants to compare him to any other player in history? No theres no comparison with the King. He is alone in his own category. My Grandpa was a huge fan of pelé. He was the same age , sadly he left us way too early. But I share his love for the beautiful game , and so I share the admiration for Pelé. He was the greatest of all time, for me that is. We knew he didn't have long , but loosing him still hurts. Rest in Peace.

Aside his numbers (It is an anachronistic argument that the Brazilian league was weak, given the fact that the Brazilian National team until the 90's was made 100% by domestic league players. And those teams, when playing against the Europeans, usually won) This man made football being loved in countries that, before him, didn't like the sport. Racist countries started to love him. Wars have stoped to see him! He made the football evolve in various aspects (tatics, yellow and red cards, skills, marking, pressing, nutrition and phisical training), mainly because he was way ahead of his time, in athletic terms, dribling and in technical terms. We have football before and after Pelé. So he is the greatest by what he made football achieve in the world, and for what the football develop to keep his pace.

I had kept up with the news about pele and had emotionally prepared in case of the devastating news of his death. But when heard them, I still shed a tear. There's football before pele and after. Almost as if an entire different sport altogether. If there was ever a face of the sport that is pele. The sheer influence he still has decades after his retirement is a testament of that.
