Great video, my speed knob jump button does not click or work. Seems like it isn’t making contact with the part that clicks, how do I take out the knob and what do I look for?
@charlieaf92
@charlieaf92 3 жыл бұрын
Hm. That's strange. I am pretty sure the knob itself pulls straight off and then pops back into place. That being said, I'm not exactly sure how the mechanism itself works as I haven't spent much time inspecting it. Does the 'jump' button in the middle of the speed knob work? I assume the incline knob works?

This video is so informative. I’m on the fence about buying a used treadmill because it will need a new tread. Some how the person who owns it put a huge hole in it. If peloton is not helpful with purchasing supplies how would I go about getting a new tread to replace it. Any suggestions

I've found the Peloton parts department to be very helpful. If you call and ask to speak to parts you have a better chance to getting someone on the phone that can answer technical questions + give you information about replacement slats.

Couple quick ones before I take my belt off. I have vibration issues and assume the motor may need to be tightened or slightly adjusted, any idea what my cause thumping/vibration. Also the read mounts under the caps I believed the old owner adjusted them so I don’t know what the original spot was. How much “droop” should the belt have under the tread? Be relatively tight? Thanks!
@charlieaf92
@charlieaf92 Жыл бұрын
Hey Max. I don't know about specs relating to main tread belt tightness, I just marked where mine was set and adjusted it to there when I reassembled. It does droop quite a bit though - so along the bottom it isn't supposed to be pulled tight. I think the slack acts as a form of impact/shock absorption for the drive motor to some degree. As far as vibration, the machine is generally pretty loud - so some of it is normal. If it is excessive, I would start by putting it into free mode and rotating the belt to see if anything feels off. Not sure if that helps at all but best of luck!

Great video. I've had so many issues and such bad experience with peloton. I live in more remote area so I get XPO has delivery service and I don't think they know what they're doing. Third time they have come out and still issues. I have noise coming from the deck now but a bigger issue is a speed knob that won't roll properly. Have you seen this issue? Anyway to fix it on my own? It moves but not how it properly should. The advantage of the machine is moving speeds during the class at quick rate. Thanks for any help and advice!

Hey Chris - sorry to hear you're having issues. What issue are you having with the knob? I believe the speed and incline knobs pull straight off. There is a plastic washer behind them if I remember correctly.

@@charlieaf92 I've pulled it off. Messed with some of the screws and still sticky. It just doesn't spin as fast as it should. I saw you take off the back panel behind the knob in your video. Was just curious if you've seen or heard of this issue before.

@@chriscobb8158 Hey Chris - I don't believe there is access to behind the knob, but I could be wrong. One of mine spins very easily and the other is more stiff. I haven't spent much time messing with them though. It may be worth a call to Peloton, if you bought it new, I believe they just extended the warranty to 5 years. At the very least, the person on the phone may be able to tell you what they would have to replace in order to fix it - and that could give you a starting point for DIY.

Great video! Do you know anything about the weight sensor on the tread? I weigh 102lbs and the treadmill keeps giving me a message telling me since no-one is on the treadmill it’s going to shut off. Peloton told me it won’t work for me and I should return it. I would live to disable the sensor so I can keep the treadmill.Thanks!!
@charlieaf92
@charlieaf92 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Laura! Interesting question... So from what I saw when I was working on it, there isn't a sensor that measures weight directly but rather infers it based on motor load. So the computer looks at the power supplied to the motor vs. the actual speed its running to determine if there is weight on the belt (I think). That being said, I would do two things to start. First, if you have someone else that is heavier, have them test the Tread and see if it operates properly. There is a chance the calibration is off and your machine is defective. If it works for them, next I would try a different Tread. If you have a Peloton showroom nearby, setup an appointment and go run on theirs to see if it does the same thing. If it works for you, then I would contact Peloton and have a new Tread sent out. As far as solutions for bypassing the sensor. If my theory is correct you could trick it by walking with a bit more of a shuffle - coming down with your foot still pushing forward against the belt. This is a way to test - but obviously not a long term solution because you don't want to mess up your running stride. The front axle is accessible to some degree by removing the front caps on each side of the machine. If the above test works, and my assumption is correct, you could theoretically add some sort of drag/brake to simulate more drag on the belt to trick the sensor feature. Before you start too far down that path though, I would recommend joining both the Peloton Tread and Official Peloton Facebook groups and posting your question. I have come across at least 1 post regarding the same issue with younger and/or lighter runners. There's a chance someone figured something out that I'm not thinking of. Finally, you could also continue calling Peloton, there's a chance that hidden in the software there is a way to calibrate/adjust the sensitivity and its just a matter of getting the right person on the phone that is aware of it.

An iguana got caught in the front part of the tread belt within inner part of the tread. How do you get access into the front inner part of the belt?
@charlieaf92
@charlieaf92 6 ай бұрын
Wow... So you can remove the slats individually but accessing the back of them (from the bottom where it sags down) and using a small wrench. The front caps on each side also pull straight off to give a bit more access.

Hey Charlie, thanks for adding this video. We are out of warranty on our tread plus and we did a hard reset to try and fix WiFi issues, but now our tread believes it’s on 1.5 incline when it is flat. Any ideas about the sensor or thoughts on why this might be happening? Thanks for your insight!
@charlieaf92
@charlieaf92 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Katherine! You probably already know this, but Peloton has recalled the Tread+. So, if you find you can't fix it you can always just have them come pick it up and get a full refund (even if you aren't the original purchaser). That being said, there is a calibration sequence that you can have the Tread run through. It does a variety of things including raising and lowering the incline to each extreme - I assume this is so that it can set the limits and understand what position it is in. I suspect running this cycle will fix your issue. I've run mine through the cycle once - the option is somewhere in the settings. Let me know if you aren't able to find it and I can try to track down specific instructions.
@katherinelancman1825
@katherinelancman1825 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for replying Charlie. It’s such a challenge. We definitely don’t want the tread to go. In terms of the calibration- I know exactly what you are talking about. It actually required that calibration process automatically when we first reset it. Unfortunately it got stuck on that up/down cycle and continued to repeat it. Now it won’t even move incline at all - when you look at the screen it says it’s on 1.5% but clearly flat. To top it all off the incline knob has stopped responding. I feel like it should be a software problem given it happened after a factory reset, but it’s getting sad now. If you have any suggestions I would love to hear them. Thanks in advance.

@charlieaf92 3 жыл бұрын
@@katherinelancman1825 I'll think this one over a bit and let you know if I come up with any other ideas. What was the first issue/symptom that prompted you to do the factory reset? Without taking my machine apart to check, I can't say for sure, but I suspect there are limit switches to tell the machine when it has hit the upper and lower limit of the incline travel. It's possible it also works off of measuring motor load/speed though. If there are limit switches one of those being misaligned or going bad could potentially lead to what you're describing.

Don’t ask me how but my son got a toy stuck in the front of the tread and it’s too big to pull out without some major force. Any tips on how to access the front without needing to take the whole thing a part? I have a video if needed.
@charlieaf92
@charlieaf92 2 жыл бұрын
Two ideas. The first would be to incline the treat up as high as it will go. That gives you access to the bottom, and tread belt has slack underneath. You may be able to work it out from there. The other ideas is if you pull the cap on the front straight out (the one closest to where the toy is) it will come off and you can move the fabric aside as well. That may give you enough clearance to pull the toy out, depending on how large it is. If those fail you can try removing a few of the slats.

Hello. My tread Stopped mid run and tripped the fuse for the room. Had been working fine for 1.5 years. Is there a fuse on the tread itself I can check. It’s definitely not getting power. Thanks
@charlieaf92
@charlieaf92 3 жыл бұрын
Have you reset the fuse for the room? I would try that first. I don't remember off the top of my head if the machine has an integrated circuit breaker or fuse. Try plugging a light or something else into the same outlet and see if it works, if it does - then I would suspect you've tripped something inside the Tread. There could be a small reset button near the on/off switch on the lower front right corner of the machine where the power cord plugs in.

Just got a replacement base (within extended warranty). Old base seemed to have bearings seemed to be going bad, making noises at low speeds. The new base is worse than the original one. I know the tread is pretty noisy in general but this new one seems like it’s making extra noises lol the major problem is that the belt slips, while the brake is engaged. So, if you have the treaded on incline, and stand towards the top of the tread, it’ll send you down. My question is, do you think that the drive belt tension or the slat belt tension? Am I able to get the drive belt without removing all the slats like you showed towards the end of the video? Edit: I know that I am still with #Warranty and I’ve scheduled somebody to come look at the tread, but that’s not for another two or three weeks. This piece of machinery that I paid for and that I pay for subscription to use monthly is too expensive to just be sitting there
@charlieaf92
@charlieaf92 11 ай бұрын
Wow that's super frustrating. To answer your first question I believe its the belt drive from the motor itself. The slat tread belt has cogs on it, so it shouldn't slip but could jump teeth if its too loose. A good way to check this is to put it at 0 incline and look under the machine. If it is dragging on the floor it is too loose. As far as your second question, you can remove individual slats with a small wrench. I haven't done it but I believe you can do it on the underside of the machine and then after removing a few rotate the belt around so the opening is where you need to access it. Hope this helps!

@charlieaf92

Thanks! Good luck with the move. If you're talking about where the arms attach to the actual base there are essentially caps on the end + fabric on the sides that cover the bolts needed to remove them (and the wire connectors on the left hand side, when standing on the tread). The 'caps' pull straight off. Sit down in front of the machine, grab them and pull them straight towards you. They have these little plastic tabs and metal push fittings that pull out. Unfortunately they're pretty cheaply made and it is likely one or more of them will break at one time or another. The fabric should just tuck/pull out around the area you need to access. Cheers.

I might try it myself first, but since you can't get a replacement motor, is it easy to find someone to repair your motor once you get it out? Appreciate any help and you leading the way on the DIY repairs.

You're welcome! I googled electric motor repair and found a place in my area fairly easily. They charged like $120 to take it apart, replace the bearings, and shave down the rotor. Very reasonable (especially compared to a new deck replacement!). Regarding getting the motor out without moving the belt. I believe it is possible, you will just have to rotate the belt around so your opening/window gives you access to the various parts. The motor itself should be fairly easy to access and unbolt, but you will also need to undo the wiring that runs the length of the deck and unplug it from the main control board. If I ever do this project again, I will definitely start by trying to do it with just removing slats. Also - if the sound is from the rotor rubbing (which I strongly suspect it was in my case) there's also a chance that continued use will wear off some of the excess metal and fix the problem itself. Someone messaged me letting me know that they tried this and eventually the noise went away. It could be worth considering. All of that being said, I'm sure you're aware that Peloton issued a recall on the machine. They're refunding the full purchase price (even if you purchased it used) to anyone that wants to return theirs. I believe you have until November to decide.

@@charlieaf92 I would really appreciate anything you can post. I have the same issue. Waited in line for nearly a year to get this product when they originally announced it. Got it 18 months ago. I take great care of it, low mileage, and now I have a very loud squeak near the front. Peloton is telling me I have to purchase a new deck from them ! They want me to pay $1,750 for the new deck which to me is absolutely outrageous. I had a Precor treadmill for 15 years that I sold to make room for this tread. There was nothing wrong with the Precor, and I now wish I had not sold it. I'm absolutely not paying $1,750 to Peloton for a new deck - not a penny of that. And since my warranty has expired, I thought I would give it a try to fix it. I've rebuilt several cars in my life, a couple motors, a couple transmissions, brake systems, built computers, rebuilt a few motors, build a number of robots, really good with electronics, built a few electric guitars, I know how to weld, etc. Peloton told me they don't publish the documentation because it is too hard to work on - just another head slapper from them. I guess they dont think people work on their own cars today - too difficult. With your video, I should be able to make quick work of the repair. Thank you for posting ! I'm hoping you can get the motor video up - Im so frustrated at Peloton, its now my personal mission to fix this thing myself just because... So any more videos you can post would be awesome. I will do the same as I tear mine down and fix it once and for all. I hope my video will be able to help others who are getting the same run around. There are lots of people that are unhappy with this situation, and for Peloton to ask me to pay $1,750 for a new deck for an 18 month sold treadmill, with less than 100 miles on it when the Treadmill was $4,000 - its just absolutely utterly absurd... Maybe. If I remember correctly there is a large panel covering the board that needs to be removed. You can remove individual tread slats and that could possibly give you the access that you need. I didn’t really pay enough attention to tell you if it’s possible for sure though. There is a connection at the base of the right side (when standing on the tread) arm, as well as in the corner on the outside of the speed adjust knob, and at the back of the monitor. All of these are easier to access and check before going to the main board.

Yes swapping the motor is definitely possible. However, it has been my experience that Peloton will not sell the motor unit by itself, and they prohibit the manufacturer of the motor from selling it directly to consumers. So.. you could replace it but you likely can't get a new one to replace it with. That being said, I would be shocked if your motor is actually broken/damaged from having an object stuck under the machine. There is a rubber drive belt that would shred before the motor suffers any ill effects. What is your Tread doing?

@@inulg Can you email me a picture of your motor and the wire you're talking about? If you have disassembled it enough to clearly see the motor there is a good chance you can remove the motor yourself and have it repaired. I would definitely try that before paying $2k for a new base! My email address is charlieaf92 at gmail

@@charlieaf92 you are right! Looking closer it looks like the incline is the culprit, not the motor. The peloton repair person had mentioned that the motor was blown, but I only see the ripped cord sticking out of the incline hydrolic thing....

Hello. Thanks so much for sharing and sorry you had to go through the stress and be a pioneer on resolving. I just ordered a Tread+ but am also considering canceling that order and buying a used one that just popped up. Do you think it is a good idea to proactively loosen the belt tensioner before using, as a sort of preventative maintenance? Can this be accessed by unzipping the fabric, or does it require a proper tear down? Thanks again!

Greetings! If memory serves me, you can loosen it by lifting the belt and using something to hold it up to get access to the top bolts. Access to the bottom is fairly easy when you put it on an incline because the belt sags giving you room to work. I have also seen some people remove a few of the slats without having to take off the entire belt. As far as whether I think its a good idea to loosen it - honestly I don't know. I was able to get the noise to go away on mine by loosening them slightly but then it came back. I originally suspected over-tightening was the issue but now I don't know for sure. It may have just been the motor was made with too tight of tolerances and when the bearings finished breaking in it resulted in metal rubbing. Knowing that it is fixable (relatively inexpensively, but very time consuming) I wouldn't discourage someone from purchasing a used one, as long as they are comfortable taking it apart. However, I would say not to pay more than the price of new less the cost of a new deck (I've seen them quoted $1800-2000). That way if you do need a new deck at least you aren't spending more than if you'd bought it new. Regardless of the route you take, best of luck. It's an awesome machine.

Why can't you just remove a few slats on the belt to get access to the motor rather than removing the entire belt? Can't the slats be removed and replaced on the belt? Removing the complete belt seems to be a monumental task requiring an almost complete disassembly and reassembly. Also I wanted to ask you, In the free mode as you push the belt, is the motor rotor still turning? The reason I ask this is because I still hear a squeaking sound in the free mode. According to your analysis I may have a motor internal rubbing problem probably caused by bearing damage. Although I don't understand how the drive belt tension performed by the tread manufacturers can destroy the motor stator and rotor, I suppose it could happen. If that's true, the motors must be defective or have a bearing problem. I wonder if heating the drive belt would help release some the tension on the motor shaft. I am still under warranty so I am going to let Peloton handle my current problem. But I am concerned because Peloton has a tendency to want to replace the complete base ( 3 times for me already) and it seems that this doesn't solve the problem. The replacement base fails, usually within a month or two of it's replacement. Also, each replacement base seems to fail similarly. This leads me to think, as you suggest, that their treadmill has an inherent design flaw that Peloton is not addressing. After my warranty runs out there is no way I can afford to buy a new base ( they cost $2500 ea.) each time it fails. IMO, Peloton might have a real problem here and as more and more people's treads fail out of warranty they could be angry enough to file a class action lawsuit especially if it can be proven that Peloton hid this flaw ( and did not correct it) from their customers. Spending over $4,000 on this treadmill , customers expect top quality in both engineering and assembly, not to mention that without a good functioning treadmill they cannot enjoy the monthly subscription to Peloton's service for which they pay $ 40/ month. P.S. I heated the drive belt with a hair dryer and the creaking noise stopped. After I heated the belt I got the tread up to 1 ,2 and 3 mph and there was no creaking noise at all. This tells me that the tension is possibly causing the creaking problem. Is there a way to adjust the drive belt tension without all the disassembly of taking the belt off?

Hey there. Yes, in free mode the drive belt and tread are still engaged with the motor. Basically there is a brake on the motor that is locked anytime the tread isn't running, when you turn on free mode it unlocks and allows the motor to spin freely. I'm not sure about removing slats to access to the motor, that certainly could work but I didn't think of it and didn't look close enough to say for sure. You can adjust drive belt tension without removing the main tread belt, but my experience has been that you need to loosen the tension of the main tread as I showed in the video to provide enough slack to access the top bolts on the motor mount. Cheers!

Also, any chance you can post the link for the plastic clips that you used to replace the clips you cut that was used to hold the fabric. Curious if you fo und some that closely resembled the originals.

@@tonylong7155 I believe there is a breaker/fuse right where the power cable plugs in - but if that trips then the whole machine will go dark. Have you tried a different outlet? Hey Jonathan - aside from the issue with the motor tolerances I feel that the machine is extremely well built and heavy duty. I really enjoy it - and having the instructor led runs is a big advantage for me (I hate running and never push myself when doing it alone, having a guided workout helps push outside of my comfort zone). That being said, I haven't seen anything to indicate that the issues with the motors has been resolved. HOWEVER with the release of the lower cost tread, the normal one is now called the Treat+ and I've heard it carries at 5 year warranty on the motor and slatted belt. In addition, I believe Peloton is retroactively applying this warranty to anyone that purchased a Tread new and reimbursing anyone for out of pocket repairs. So, if that's the case, it is a great sign that Peloton is taking responsibility for the problem. Unfortunately this doesn't apply to me, or anyone else that purchased the machine used.
