Which is probably my most expensive sealed deck. I started mtg when Coldsnap just came out. Bought the Alliance, Ice Age,and Cold snap theme decks and entire collections. Have a Cold snap fat pack but also all the memorabilia for Coldsnap. Posters. Spent alot of money during Uni playing at Friday night magic tournaments. Glad I never mixed my theme decks from past. Now, we just have fun seeing if a theme decks from 2006 can defeat one from specific other time. And various other dates. This video perfectly encapsulates what I can only imagine what it was like to pull cards back in the day. The fact that there's not much card knowledge and they're just going by art and name before anything else is awesome. I am mind blown away by how much that starter deck was. I remember when I was a teenager 30+ years ago. My friends and I would buy a started deck and five packs and have tournaments amongst ourselves. The winner would get to choose ten cards from each person and keep them. Spend like $25 on the whole thing. Now its a lot more it seems

I was in middle school when this series came out. Never had a Black Lotus, but I also didn’t ever actually play with them - I just collected them because I liked the artwork (so I kept them in great condition). Later when I was in college, I just gave all of my cards away to my dorm mate who was an avid player, but if I knew they’d be worth anything someday I probably would have hung onto them!

Great video, guys. I'm 50 and have been playing MTG since '95. My friend group at the time played D&D, and I remember hating on MTG as "just a card version of D&D" after one of us showed up one day with a pack of Alpha. Lol, if we only knew back then what they'd be worth. By the time I got into the game, stores weren't selling Alpha or even Beta packs anymore.

Yeah the $3 million sale was for an un-played Black Lotus basically in perfect condition. If it's ever touched a table I don't think it would be worth nearly that much. The market listings for near-mint Beta are around $25k, so an Alpha would be maybe $90-$100k?

Dont let your possessions own you. I collect vintage hot wheels and it bugs me how some new collectors freak out about how rare cars are handled, as if opening them is one of the deadly sins. Even if one is worth thousands of dollars on the secondary market theyre still just little toy cars made to be played with. Their perceived value is artificial. Also the value doesnt matter at all if you never plan to sell them. The people who freak out about value arent collectors, theyre traders. They buy/sell/trade the items. People like Charlie are true collectors. He keeps what he buys and doesnt freak out about keeping them perfectly mint. It's awesome to see another collector of vintage toys treat these things the same way i do. Charlie doesnt let his possessioms own him.
