The hand of a good writer is invisible. Good writing flows into the story naturally. This makes stories far more immersive, but with the cost of writers not receiving as much credit as on-screen jobs like actors. People only notice writers when either immersion is broken or they are watching the show specifically to dissect it's writing and see why it works. Immersion is very often broken by bad writing, whether it be a particularly annoying cliche, out of character moments, an offensive narrative, 1 episode being a rehash of another, etc.

Conan O‘Brien is a genius when it comes to comedy, literally worked as a writer for commedians in his younger years. It's sad that a lot people forget that Conan was a talk show host. When they hear talk show host, it's always Kimmel, Fallon, Myers, Noah, Oliver, and many more who uses their platform for politics. Gone are the days when jokes are thrown against everybody and nobody gets triggered. I used to watch Kimmel back when he was actually funny. Now he's basically a Ben Shapiro type political commentator who tries to be funny.

@@acreditar-belive2950 Bro.... what?.... Look, I love Last Week Tonight and I'm mostly in line w/ Oliver's politics; but I would never try to hide him using his platform for pushing for changes. I think what you are interpreting politics to be opinions about politicians themselves (and maybe even just the big politicians). That's not what the word means. He brings up a lot of serious issues and gives possible solutions consisting of political changes and/or cultural/etc. I don't think that's bad at all. And if you watch him, then that's what you're looking for. Conan also has made some political stances, but just the easy/typical ones from what I recall. Being political has nothing to do with ability to write one's own jokes. Which is what makes him special.

Lemme tell you a funny story. So I’m an animation student and recently our school got a visit by one of the Big Mouth writers where he got to talk about the state of the animation industry right now due to the writers strike and what we as students should take into account when applying for industry jobs. Now all of us were initially dreading this lecture because… come on, it’s Big Mouth. But what was surprising to us and later just fucking hilarious was that he lectured us about how streaming services right now were being downright vile to their staff in terms of pay. He sited that Netflix was so fucking bad, that they were only willing to pay the writers more money if they didn’t unionize. Throughout the lecture, he gave us an entire “fuck Netflix” speech and at the end of it said that since he doesn’t work on the show anymore, he’s been the happiest he’s ever been and that he was glad the show got canceled. Really nice guy tbh.

The writers strike 10 years ago single handedly sent Heroes into the GROUND. The amount of buzz and hype and cultural impact that show had, crashing to a halt after trying to make the show work without their writers. The seasons that happened because of that were retconned in the highest degree, to the point that the writers for later seasons said "just pretend that season didn't happen" because not a SINGLE plot point was able to work.

The problem right now with the Writer’s Strike is that - despite the explosion in streaming content - nothing in streaming is actually making money. Not a single streaming service has been long term profitable. Netflix only was making profit when no other service existed, and they weren’t spending billions upon billions of dollars on ‘original content’. It’s a service that requires constant technical updates across devices and operating system platforms, streaming rights costs is becoming more and more expensive long term, and most streaming services don’t rely nearly as much on advertising revenue compared to traditional TV. So all of Netflix’s profits are now gone, and other studios services aren’t making much to begin with. Disney even admitted they made more money selling streaming rights than hording their content on Disney +. Writers are important, but frankly they’re asking for money that may not exist. You think HBO Max is removing shows and movies they themselves made and produced for no reason…?

I remember the writers strike of the late of 2007-08. It tanked some promising shows, because everyone lost interest and the shows became aimless. Heroes was a big one that had been promoted so much, had a good first, mmm, two seasons, then went off the rails. Pushing Daisies, which had the bad fortune of premiering in 2007, was wonderfully charming and weird and it just couldn’t get the viewers and folded in 2009. It was a huge hit with critics and did get to live on in other forms. The show was so creative with it’s faced-paced intelligent dialogue and unique plot, plus stunning visual style, it was still lamented over years later. Writers deserve soooo much credit. It’s their minds who create the gripping shows we watch. We’ve been through this, I thought the industry learned. They shouldn’t have to be striking again so soon. The networks should be already working feverishly on getting the writers what they deserve. To come to a strike is a HUGE step. And signals real trouble for the industry. I’m so disappointed.

The writing department has been absolute shit across the board though. Movies, TV series, late-night shows. This strike is aimed to KEEP the terrible level of writing, by keeping the same worthless hacks employed, so they can churn out more of the same shit. If anything, it'd be better to NOT have a successful strike - that way, (hopefully) the shit writers will have quit or be let go, and only the talented ones would remain, giving the industry way better quality overall. Coming to a strike is a HUGE step indeed - the death-throws of talentless people, trying to hold on to their paychecks, despite being awful at their jobs.

I think part of the problem with the public's perception of writers is that we have so strongly pushed the idea that the director is the author of a movie. I support that idea. I volunteer in local theater and sometimes different ones do local story contests for an original ten minute play and whenever I've been asked to direct or taken directorial classes as a summer camp when I was younger a question that we we're given or we should ask ourselves is "What is the writer trying to say?" And "How will you be able to present the ideas and story to the audience effectively?" And I think that is something that the paid creatives forget.

If they'd waited any longer and allowed the production companies to start to bring in AI and get its foot in the door, it would have been too late. The problem was the late late show with Craig Ferguson was actually an awesome show with hillarious improv, and a genuine comedian as the host. Once letterman left, because he owned both times lots, craigs show went with him. They beleived it was the time slot that was so valuable, so they invested alot into the show they replaced it with. Also since NBC didn't own the timeslot they refused to advertise Craig's show. despite the lack of budget, it is still my all time favorite late night show

Honestly as a Craig Ferguson fan from all those years back it is sad to see the entire show end as opposed to doing an NBC an just firing Cordon for a new host. It’s kinda mind-boggling how good Craig made that show with what little budget he was given vs how lenient they were to Cordon despite losing money. What because he had one successful segment and was more advertiser friendly. The late late show with Craig was one I went to see live before he left and I’m glad I did just shows how important a host is to a talk show.

They really caught lightning in a bottle with Craig (and Geoff). It was the right kind of 'different' content for a lot of people at the right point in time. Their lack of budget even helped at times to set the right punkrock-we'll-do-it-live kinda vibe Craig was going for. But it wasnt super advertiser friendly as you say. So glad I got to watch it when it was on though =)

The music industry is in no way 'fair' lmao. Its fantastic for writers, cause they add two words or three notes to a song and are instantly entitled to like 25-50%. But people who make the actual music (recording engineers, session musicians, mixing and mastering engineers, etc.) they get 0%. It is not a fair industry at all, just extremely biased towards writers getting all the compensation.

@@GrimNephilim That attitude is corpo propaganda. Everyone should be allowed to unionize and demand fair compensation, regardless of what they do. @@GrimNephilim "Nobody protests for the incredibly low income jobs that literally make or break our country" thats because blue collar unions have been dead for almost a century due to union busting, legislations that favor coporations, and scaring new employees into not forming unions, and in some cases bringing in the national guard to kill workers (the later im refering to the West Virginia Coal Wars) the only reason why SAG, IATSE, and the Writer's guild is able to shut down their entire industry, is because they are powerful enough to even *attempt* to get coporations into the negotiation table. moral of the story, your labor matters, no matter what career you are in. there is no such thing as a "real job". and once you go down that path and put down another worker, you dont care about the working class.

Regarding the streaming compensation, this is exactly what happened to the music industry. Before 2010, 90% of artist revenue was CD sales and 10% was concerts and merch. Steven Wright, one of the greatest dead pan comics ever was absolutely enamored by him.. Steven had no chance of keeping a straight face around Craig.. him and robin williams together.. even him and Morgan freeman.. we may not have a talk show host like craig Ferguson for a long time if we ever do again.. I can’t say for sure that James cordon is an asshole but a lot of people seem to think so.. I won’t dabble in those affairs.. but I can say that watching cordon and then going back to watch craig Ferguson left me feeling that they were polar opposites.. there was a never a dull moment with Ferguson.. maybe a sad or perhaps uncomfortable moment or 2.. but for those most part.. you got to see celebrities be themselves a bit more than when they were on one of those “professional” shows.. you should totally do a video one craig Ferguson Charlie.. at least I think.. maybe a tier list of talk show hosts?
