The worst part is that "releasing anger" with violent or destructive actions has been shown in every study that has researched it to be counterproductive and actually increase stress and anger hormones. It might feel good to destroy stuff, but it wont actually fix the emotions.

It's absolutely okay as a last resort when you realize you've been bottling for a very long time, as long as you don't sustain yourself in this state for too long, and then immediately move to something more restorative. But yes, this should not be anyone's primary coping skill. The point is to use coping skills before getting to the point of needing to release explosive emotions. However, this is relative- for those who use maladaptive coping skills such as drugs or self injury, this is an acceptable transition into less-destructive coping skills. I'm a mental health worker based in DBT.

Not only is this a scam, its also unhealthy. Human beings don't really "get things out of their system" by indulging in it. By being angry and throwing or hitting things as a way to be calm is only a temporary fix for a much deeper problem later on. Please, resolve your problems in a way thats going to actually help your mental health.
@TheEudaemonicPlague

Evidence or shut the fuck up. When overwhelmed with anger, it's _always_ better to let it out than locking it inside. Not to mention the simple fact that mental health professionals (as in not just one) recommended doing exactly this to me. Yes, people _do_ "get it out of their system". You try living you entire life with mental health issues that include being angry much of the time...when you get help, they'll tell you the same.

Back in the 80s there were a bunch of therapists peddling this thing called rebirthing as a cure for all sorts of psychological problems. They would charge hundreds of dollars per hour to wrap their clients in a blanket, sit on them and tell them to fight their way out of the blanket because that somehow mimics the birthing process. It was all the rage until a young girl died of suffocation because she had multiple grown ass adults smothering her in a blanket and screaming at her to fight her way out. @@decas5505no the idea is to channel your emotions into appropriate activities like, for example, exercising, journaling, going out into the woods and screaming, etc. That way you learn to work through tough emotions rather than bottling them up inside until they burst. ”Blowing steam” or ”releasing anger” is one of those things thats easy to sell but never solves the issue of why you are tense or angry. Its like weight loss pills, it doesent do really anything but a placebo. If you are actually mad its better to calm down and contemplate the issue, and find a potentual solution.

Thinking rationally isn't exactly something u do when you're mad. Regardless, some people really do just need to blow steam cause life can be bullshit sometimes

@@pootzmagootz While you are angry yes, but none of these women are propably fuming right then and there when they throw several thousands for reservation to go into the woods to smack sticks on the ground. Its alot healthier to remove yourself from the sittuation so you dont do anything irational, calm down and plan how you’ll try to change the thing that is causing you anger (if you can). If you cant, read Marcus Aurelius’ meditations.

Guided anger-meditation, perfect analysis!😂 "Releasing your anger" in this manner is not advocated anywhere, by anyone in mental health since the 1980's. All it does is reinforce your anger, making it stronger and making it more likely to get angry, frustrated, and violent in the future.

there's an inhumane experiment called the bobo doll experiment, where kids were told to beat up bobo doll's to solve their tempers and they made the kids sociopaths. you don't learn coping mechanisms by hitting stuff you just learn to hit stuff more. i remind you this is an inhumane experiment.
