Technically the first instance was when film was first brought to the public. There's a popular story about a 'train coming at you' video in very early film that got people legitimately scared out of their pants. Also worth noting, War of the Worlds, a radio broadcast designed to feel real, for fun, and a lot of people thought we were actually getting taken over by aliens.
@zogwort152211 күн бұрын
@@KnownAsKenji incorrect. Very few people (if any) took the War of the Worlds broadcast seriously. Print media ran that story purely to slander the radio as a competing medium. Like "yo, the radio stations are full of irresponsible people who will lie to your face, read the newspapers instead."

I knew a guy who was telling me about his experience doing this at the end of his band's set at a club. He didn't tell anyone else in the band about it, just suddenly pulled out a shotgun hidden on stage, putting it under his neck, and his hat exploding with squibs as he falls backwards so nobody could see his head was still unharmed. It's been many years since he told me about it and what really stood out about his story was how horrified the shop clerk was when he was explaining the setup under his hat he wanted to build and his shame when she informed him that her son had unhero himself with a gun. So I don't remember if my friend actually went through with it or got a sober wake up from the lady's disgust. Either way, people will remember this idea for decades to come.

6:54 I think this the saddest part of this idea and the movie industry as a whole. I've seen multiple people say "the best modern horror movie would be one that doesn't advertise itself like a horror movie." And the response is always just "people will sue for false advertising and bankrupt the studio." The subversion of expectations is exactly what the horror genre could capitalize on and make something great, in the right hands, but the Necronomicon was written in Legalese.
@Da1337Man11 күн бұрын
Wouldn't adding a disclaimer before the movie starts that anyone with heart issues or struggling with depression etc. should proceed with caution render that issue moot? Like Doki Doki Literature Club did. It started out like your usual cutsie dating simulator, but warned its audience that shit is going to get dark.
@justaregulardude89511 күн бұрын
People watch genre movies for the formulas. You can mix and match ingredients, but there are no new ingredients. Ghostwatch did the fake "live broadcast" gimmick already, and Dashcam did the "real livestreamer in a horror movie plot" gimmick already. There is nothing new under the sun and no wheel to reinvent. Subversive horror movies already exist in droves. Whether they go to theaters or not is another question, but theaters are a moot point in such an overcrowded market. You must simply look for them.
@FLXTLINE_M311 күн бұрын
This is why sometimes I just book tickets for films then walk in and I will have barely seen the cover art for them. Since I live next to my local Regal and utilize Unlimited it's such a fun thing to do and I've watched films that by the name I expected one thing then bam get hit with something completely different.
@supersmash530511 күн бұрын
It's not just that the audience would be upset, but when pitching a movie, you're supposed to pitch it to producers on how it'll be marketed and a horror movie that is advertised as something else would be extremely hard to pitch and would likely be considered too risky of an investment. It would have to be done by a well established horror director like John Carpenter or Jordan Peele, or entirely self-funded.

a movie about a serial killer who works at a cinema and kills someone in the backrow silently while all the lights are of and a movie is playing would probably be pretty easy to make into an actual horror movie as well. everyone watching the movie in cinemas would be so paranoid the whole time but its not like they would be able to see or hear if anything is happening in the back of the cinema because the lights are of and the surround sound is blocking out any actual sound

this reminds me of that one advertisement about texting and driving where people in a movie theater were watching a POV of driving a car, and then everyone got a text (from the people in the booth who had set this up), and while everyone was checking their phones, the POV footage on the big screen drifted off of the road and crashed. I feel like it's a similar thing in how it completely yanks you into reality. In fact, there are several advertisements to promote safe driving (seat belt, don't DUI, don't check your phone) that are similarly unsettling, at least to me, which means they're doing their job well. Hits me harder than any horror movie could, because it's not just a scripted sequence of events meant to be scary. It's a real risk that, and all other drivers, face on the roads every time we get into a car.
@DanS04411 күн бұрын
I can't think of a better reason however to utilise cheap shock tactics than promoting safe driving.
@TheFallopianTube42011 күн бұрын
My favorite advertisements for promoting safe driving are the big ass signs on the side of the road that take your attention away from the road to the sign just for it to say some shit like 'pay attention to the road' with some stats underneath. Very counterintuitive.
@rubikvoncube358311 күн бұрын
@TheFallopianTube420 fr, only stuff on signs should be navigation/emergency related. Billboards are already a thing, but then they put up some "drive safe" message on a billboard that you shouldn't even be looking at? Idk maybe they know something I don't. But at least from what I've seen, the worst offenders are the electronic signs on highways (in the US). They are literally only for the DOT to display messages, usually relating to construction, weather, etc. But rather than turning them off when there's nothing of note, they have them going 24/7 saying "eyes on the road" and "don't drink and drive" and "buckle up". Like seriously? Again, maybe they know something I don't, but to me it just seems like misusing a official resource, that is normally devoted to providing time-sensitive information about driving conditons, for low-effort messages that seem a bit contradictory and probably don't have any real effect :/
@-______________________10 күн бұрын
Sperg
@TheFallopianTube42010 күн бұрын
@@rubikvoncube3583 Yeah, those electronic ones are important and helpful when they're letting you know upcoming road conditions, weather events, and even amber alerts or other messages to that extent since it's for something useful. On the other hand however, throwing up a sign saying "dont drink and drive" probably won't change any decisions made by someone who is already going out to drink, and definitely wouldn't help someone already drunk on the road. The irony of the "eyes on the road" messages humor me a little each time I see them but it really is dumb that they specifically have on signs made to divert your attention just for them to tell you not to divert your attention. Who knows maybe they do it on purpose 💀

The first person would enact the prank, whereupon something would seem to go terribly wrong, and one of the friends would fake their death. Then after a couple traumatic minutes they'd reveal that it was actually a prank to the original person. Personally it never seemed that funny to me.

Grave Encounters 1 and 2 is the best example of found footage working I’ve ever watched myself! @@sovoius that’s not how trauma works, it doesn’t matter if he came back alive. It’s the fact that somebody would watch someone they care about be shot in the head and would have a few minutes to allow that trauma to take affect. Trauma can have a lifetime impact from only a second. And I’m pretty sure there’s been quite a few cases where fine print wasn’t enough to disregard a drastic toll on someone’s mental health, especially when that drastic toll on their mental health was the intended purpose

The bit after saying they would realize it wasn't real during the moment is only extra reason why he wouldnt be able to be sued. let me reiterate since you took my reply as not understanding that this movie is a bad idea because yes it is one, and that it would likely scare people and possibly traumatize them, but nothing like this would be allowed to be aired unless there was a obvious warning stating that it was not real events for that very reason and if people still disregard that and believe it to be true then thats kind of on them (legally speaking).

This reminds me of the Sam Pepper 'Killing Best Friend Prank.' The prank begins with the two best friends in a dark alley where the staged kidnapping takes place. Even at this point Sam (Colby's best friend and victim) is freaked out and clearly has no idea any of this is staged. The video culminates with Colby and Sam on a rooftop tied to metal chairs with bags over their heads. One of the kidnappers takes Sam's bag off, points a gun at Colby's head and says he's going to kill him. As Sam is shaking the chair and pleading for the kidnappers to spare Colby's life they walk over and shoot Colby in the head. Sam is crying and screaming hysterically when finally the prank is revealed and Colby is alive, unharmed and comforts his best friend.

Something like a disease that spread around the world in a few days and slowly made the infected psychotic and obsessed with the people who weren’t infected. You could tell whether people were infected by them staring at you and their pupils would be fully dilated. This was like a two part dream where I woke up being pursued and then fell back asleep into another side plot like scenario. I still remember the main gist of it like it was a movie and it’s kind of insane.

Make everyone forget about this video (except the initiated and conspiracy theorist people) and then once you think it's ready y'all film and CGI up the final confrontation. Someone '"Gets shot "live"' on stream... There'd be so many dynamic ways to plot all of that out. Like War of the Worlds, it would be spoken of for decades. In 2077 it will be given a film starring Tom Cruise as Charlie, and for once Tom won't have to wear lifts or stand on a soapbox in his scenes.

One idea for a movie would be freaky could be something that looks like a normal movie at first glance with a full plot and everything, however it would have really weird a weird and unexplainable ending. This is because there would be a secret horror aspect to it, such as if you watched the movie again or watched it very closely, you would begin to notice creepy images and signs that piece together an entire different outlook on the events of the original story. Then, when all of it is pieced together, the original ending would begin to make sense. I don’t know if this would actually work or not, just something I thought of after the idea 5:59

Almost this exact thing happened on Kai Cenat's stream a couple a months ago during his subathon. A magician came on stream and it seemed as if he hanged himself and everyone on stream thought they witnessed a man actually commit suicide. His "prank" was even worse though because nobody but him and his team were in on it so Kai, everybody at the house, and the 400k+ people watching all thought they witnessed a man's death. Then he proceeded to say nothing about it afterwards and refused to come on stream to show that he wasn't actually dead so his was way more messed up but yeah.

Jesus. It's kinda cringe hearing him claim he knows the entire horror genre and think nobody's ever done anything like this before. Orson Welles literally did something like that on the 'wireless' with War of the Worlds in 1938. The modern 'found footage' horror genre was started with Cannibal Holocaust in 1980, and the director literally made his cast go into hiding for several months so he could fake their deaths. He even got arrested and had to recall them so he didn't go to jail for murdering them. There was a UK Halloween TV program called Ghostwatch in 1992 that was presented as a live broadcast that descended into supernatural chaos and convinced millions of people it was real. More recently there have been loads of really gross fake KZbin death pranks and even an actual death where some idiot got his wife to shoot him on camera to prove a Bible could stop a bullet and died because it didn't. Also the 'guy who invented Kevlar' never got anyone to shoot him to prove it worked. That's because he never existed and Kevlar was invented by a woman- Stephanie Kwolek of DuPont Chemicals. The guy who famously lets himself be shot to demonstrate the effectiveness of the material is called Richard Davis. He was an early user of Kevlar to manufacture bulletproof vests, but he didn't invent it,.

As an addition to that bit, what would really sell it, is if Moist sets up a stream at the exact same time, but instead of an actual stream, he puts a very long version of the "tragedy" and lines it up so that the part he wants to show, lines up with what is shown in the theatre. And this way, you can make it seem like the theatre employee was just browsing twitch and was "accidentally" projecting it on the screen and so, people who knows Moist might check their phones and see the "live stream" and cause even more terror.
