It is a very complicated story. I wasn't allowed to watch most of the Nickelodeon programing, excluding Nick Jr, as a small child for various reasons. I think my parents excuse for why I could not watch "Fairy Odd Parents" was because it has magic in it. Ironically it appears now that Butch is trying to pander to the same audience that disapproved of his shows. P.S. Now, that I am an adult I have tried to watch some of the kids shows that I wasn't allowed to as a kid. Most of them seem pretty stupid or dated to me now. However, I assume it is because I have no nostalgia for them.

OK, here's the thing where I believe it crosses the line. He can be a openly religious guy in this type of industry without trying to hinder quality for the sake of family-friendly content, opposing the more recent changes to how shows bring in more radically expansive ideas on that type of subject. The thing is, the moment he pushes in some sort of biased agenda that a lot of those other shows unfortunately strive for (like Steven Universe's horrible excuse of glorifying a one-side viewpoint on how sex is depicted in the most inappropriate way possible), that's where all odds are off. I mean it can, I've seen it personally. It's just a majority of the audience is adults and youtube as an entity has too much riding on adult centered entertainment (Not referring to porn, just to clarify.) so banning kids stuff just doesn't work, also kids naturally gravitate towards foreign material because its unique and different, so for instance Anime. Video Games (For the short while they were fresh. And also new types of games etc.). So just because youtube (the fuck up of a company it is.) can't manage it's stuff because it A: Makes them money. And B: Costs them money to manage. Doesn't mean you can't have something like that. Plus (I hated that Charlie made this point.) It's not always! The parents fault, for instance child locks on phones are not infallible. You have to pay to block porn sites (not even joking.). And also the ratings on movies are very lenient, for instance a PG-13 movie has the F word in it (It's allowed once I think.) as well as sex references etc. And there are lots of movies that seem "kid friendly" that are rated for adults etc, such as Deadpool, lots of parents took their kids to see that and they were thoroughly surprised at it. And it takes a lot of work to look out for that stuff even if you aren't closely monitoring everything they watch (even then stuff slips through the cracks.), plus essentially what Charlie is asking for parents to do is to take the child's agency as a child away by having to closely monitor everything they consume. If you could think about it from a parents perspective having an app or something that doesn't allow adult media and doesn't allow for such things helps, and then all you have to do is block their access to apps and monitor their google stuff or block certain sites from popping up and put the settings under password protection (which is still a lot of work, and requires a lot of set up which is why it's still very fallible by the parents, even by a normal tech-savvy person.). I also dislike his whole "children are people too!" argument, like Butch never explicitly said "All kids are exactly the same." or "Kids all share the same opinion." Some kids are fascinated by gore, and guts and unique things that seem bad. They get a thrill out of it, now the thing is, it still frightens them. So the Exorcist probably shouldn't have been seen as good by the kid because he wouldn't have got why it was so influential or interesting, the little girl literally calls them cocksuckers and other stuff etc. So to him the movie should've been "Ehh this is kind of scary, and boring." And unless the kid was lying and trying to appeal to adults to get their attention (Which is a big problem, mainly because parents rarely if ever give attention to their children, so they then seek the attention of others and then need a way to appeal to them hence.) he probably would have had to have seen or known about adult stuff to get it. Ya know a kid knowing the word Fuck, doesn't mean he understands the severity of it, it's the contexts he learns it in that tells you of what he was learning. So how could he have liked it if he didn't understand it? Do you like Japanese films without subtitles?

Isn't desensitisation the other way around? I watched John Wick a few weeks ago and didn't enjoy it nearly as much as I would have if I watched it years ago. The reason: I watched The Raid. The fights and action in that movie (and its sequel) were so good that it made John Wick's weaker in comparison. So wouldn't the child enjoy The Exorcist *less* if they were desensitised to horror considering horror is the main appeal?

Well does violence have to be horribly gruesome to be written well into a story? I think you can be desensitized to horror if a persons idea of that is just a bunch of gross blood and stuff. But a horror story can be written well without using all of that stuff to carry it. I think it is really bad how many writers just write stuff for shock and don't focus on the story or the characters at all. But I guess some people are into that. But I think the main point Butch was getting at is that it is concerning that children are already desensitized to so much violence. And I do think there is something to say about the way violence is so normalized in our culture. But I don't think this entertainment thing is a good idea at all...mostly because it is already a thing

There is always a market for absurd cartoons like ren and stimpy but ren and stimpy worked because it was somewhat adult. Just making a gross incomprehensible show for the sake of making something "appealing to kids" doesn't work on the older ones. Basically, he's probably gonna make a bunch of really, really safe trite thats not gonna interest most kids. Popular cartoons now tend to be much darker, at least more mature, than Butch's nick era of episodic content. Plus I feel like the controversial aspects of most cartoons now are NOT gonna fly on his network. I find that people these days try to avoid blaming anything on actual people as much as they can. The cause of shootings is the gun, the cause of obesity is the food, or as you see here, the cause of kids seeing innapropriate content on tv is the media. Nobody blames the shooter, the fat person, or the parents. So of course, you end up seeing stuff like this that tries to fix a problem by treating a single symptom, instead of doing anything about the root cause.

Probably because most of these problems are more three dimensional than that and people are realizing this. Shootings can be factored by mental health, gun control including unregulated online sells, family environment, traumas, schools, social networks who harbor such ideology. Obesity by poverty, environment, capitalism (cheap corn syrup byproducts, cheap sugars/carbs, vs more expensive proteins, fibers, GMO-free labeled shit) upbringing, mental illness, medical illness, familial history. Blaming the person implies that this person is inherently flawed and that the person and by proxy the rest of us is free from influences. Trying to understand why and how these things happen is more important. Also any kind of nutritional therapist or dietician can tell you that obesity epidemic has many many layers and therapy can help with accepting responsibility, addressing factors and personal behavior, learning coping mechanisms, self control, etc to combat weight related issues. You don’t put blame on the person you give a helping hand to learn how to cope with the issue at hand
