As someone who owns chickens, roosters will literally murder each other. They have spurs on their legs which these use to stab each other and , of course, humans. If they jump and get you in the neck, well you’re dead. However, they follow a sort of pecking order, meaning if you put the rooster in its place it wont attack you. But if it feels its territory and flock are at risk, they’ll attack no matter what. Also, by territory, I mean anywhere they take a shit. Conclusion: Florida is, in fact, in the void, and roosters are nasty.

As someone who's had pet chickens and would be devastated if one of my girls died, I'm leaning towards James' side. Like yeah it's terrible that he never told his neigbor what happened, but Roosters are indeed aggressive and territorial. And contrary to their size, they will fuck you UP if they want to. Those spurs and talons tear through skin like razors and it's no rare occurence that chicken farmers have to cull the occaisional rooster because it's attacking farmhands or other hens. Big Roo likely thought the whole neighborhood was his territory since his owner never fenced him in and that's gonna cause problems for everyone.

I'm sure other people like geese or even simply like having difficult animals but neither appeal to me as a utility or pet. Again, I'm sure people have had good experiences with geese, but the few people I've known who've tried owning geese say they're a lot like really big, really unpredictable ducks.
@strayiggytv2 жыл бұрын
@@waxblast7528 the aggression level in roosters varies wildly between individuals. You want a rooster aggressive enough to defend the hens from predators but not a "man fighter" or one that attacks hens. Definitely cull roosters who do either of those things but a human/hen friendly rooster can be a real predator deterrent.
@burnished2 жыл бұрын
As someone in the farming community, keeping Roosters that show any aggression towards people is not acceptable. If the guy wanted a pet rooster, he needs to keep it contained in his yard. Honestly the guy that had the rooster is lucky no one called animal control on it for attacking people in the community.

As someone who grew up on multiple farms, this was definitely self defense, most of the time you buy a rooster specifically because they're aggressive so that it'll protect your hens from coyotess owls, and lynx's, roosters will go toe to toe with anything just like a damn badger, and from my experience, there isn't any special burial ceremony people give to their roosters, at least not commonplace so throwing it in a ditch where it's out of the way of getting disturbed by traffic sounds like the only real option besides leaving the corpse by the owners house, which probably would have come off worse. Roosters are glass cannons in the perfect sense of the word, they can only take so much, but in that time you could pretty easily get a one way trip to the hospital. Ik general society probably sees this as a joke, but if it wasn't for that stick, this could have been a very different story

Overall: Owner should've been keeping the rooster contained at the very least, and James should've told him what happened. I mostly agree with James though.

When I was a baby my parents had a road island red rooster, appropriately named Red. He was taller than average, around two feet. He hated, HATED, my mother. Was otherwise completely fine. Sometimes roosters, if kept in bad conditions + don’t have hens around, are known to wake up one day completely different and terribly aggressive, especially to people. This was not Red, as the only person he ever hated was my mother. He would go outside her bedroom window, which is on the first floor but high up, and would jump up over and over again to stare at her. If she went outside, he would absolutely chase and attack with full power. If she wanted to get out of a car, she would open and close the opposite car door where he would run to, and then bolt inside while he was confused. It’s not uncommon for roosters to do this to people who have wronged them or something, but my mom never did anything to this chicken. Dude just hated her.

The owner should've kept his chicken in his yard while he's not around, for the safety of the chicken. And since the rooster clearly wasn't socialized well enough, it was also territorial which led it to attack people- which is dangerous for the people AND the chicken. And yes, chickens can cause a lot of damage, especially roosters. They grow sharp spurs on their legs. He may have cut them off, but if not, chickens can actually sometimes stab people to death.

I’ve seen enough court cases of animal violence to tell you that if this gets taken to civil court, this is not going to go well for Jason. As the owner of the pet, it is HIS responsibility to make sure the animal is contained. He knew the animal ran loose in the community and I get a laugh at him saying the rooster “played” with the neighbor’s kids. The fact that James is facing felony charges is laughable. If I was the judge, I’d drop those charges immediately. Jason’s side of the story is incredibly stupid. I grew up on a farm with chickens. Roosters don’t “play.” They are very aggressive and mean. If the kids are throwing rocks at it, they aren’t “playing.” They are trying to get that mean son of a bitch to leave them alone. Jason’s story sounds like one of complete nonsense and wishful thinking. I agree the one thing James did wrong was not communicate about the situation. He should have been the one to call animal control to say he got attacked by the neighbor’s rooster and talk to the neighbor instead of leave it dead in a ditch. To be fair though, I get the feeling James didn’t like the rooster and I hardly think him killing it was an “accident.” When he was swinging the stick at it, he probably was trying to kill it while it was attacking him. Still, if Jason is telling the truth and the rooster attacked him, then he is entitled to self-defense, despite how “small” the animal is.
@narwhal98522 жыл бұрын
It's literally all speculation. Animals are completely unpredictable and using force when one even runs up on you should be justified. I punched a lady's dog before it was running straight towards me, turns out it was friendly... but how was I supposed to know it didn't mean harm There's literally nothing on him. If anything Jason should be the only one looked at. The fact James spent anytime behind bars over pure speculation is a complete injustice and a major abuse of our justice system
@justaregulardude8952 жыл бұрын
It won't go to civil court unless the rooster owner can prove that he lost money from it. Animals are property and are worth precisely ZERO dollars to the civil court system unless the animal was a working animal or a show animal and you lose income from the death of the animal. Nobody gets money in court from someone killing your pet...that's probably why he pressed criminal charges. It's the only way to get "justice" in that scenario.

As a fellow Florida man I just had a similar situation with three gaggles of Geese. I was looking for a skatespot, got out of my car to check something and see this family of ducks coming up to me. I think, ok, whatever, and get my board to skate over the pavement and check some other stuff. Now I'm at the back of the parking lot and not only did the first family of like 5 or 6 babies and one mama duck follow me, two more families plus some adult stragglers we're all coming my way. And they were REALLY COMING. I got a little weirded out at this point so I ran around them and just managed to get back into my car before the ducks finally caught up with me. It was honestly a little scary. I love baby ducks but when a whole bunch of em start gunning for ya it can be really hard to tell their intentions. Like, they could've just been curious or even hoping I had some food as they were in a swampy area next to a closed down restaurant. But if they were scared of me and we're trying to defend their babies.... Well, I could maybe take a couple of ducks.... But 20 - 30 all coming at me at once? Even with my skateboard as a weapon I don't fancy those odds. Still... They didn't seem intentionally aggressive and it was a pretty decent skate spot so I will probably try and go back there one of these days. Wish me luck, y'all. Hopefully, I don't also end up on the news.

Most are no problem but every now and again you get a Gallo Negro (Black Chicken) which is a term used for the biggest baddest rooster/person there is (Not always but the myth perpetuates that those roosters usually they tend to have black or grey feathers). So, speaking on experience of my sister owning chickens and a small rooster, I have to believe James here. Her rooster is small but even it runs at you to attack when you open the hen enclosure or if you get too close to the hens - basically where it feels it needs to protect its area. Even that is scary (got good videos of my brother running away screaming), especially as you just don't know what to actually do. It is also irresponsible of Jason, especially if he wasn't home, to leave his rooster outside. Whenever my sister leaves home, she ensures that her hens and rooster are in the enclosure for both their safety and others - particularly with the other wildlife around. Even at home, she has cameras around the house so can call them back to the garden if they stray into other people's properties. The only bit James could have done is talk to Jason and apologise however even then, it doesn't sound like Jason was in so perhaps he didn't get the chance. Sad for the Rooster but I have to say, Jason is the main villian here if you ask me as clearly just didn't do enough to ensure his Rooster was safe.

From what the dude described, that is pretty much exactly what roosters do when they attack. My family had chickens growing up. Most were hens, but we had a few roosters too. They can get pretty big, and they have spurs that are actually really sharp and can cause real damage. Luckily, our big guy was really chill and didn't mind people or our dogs. We had one that was a smaller breed and was like a quarter the size of a normal chicken, and he definitely had little man syndrome. He was so small though, that when he was getting aggressive you could just lightly scoot him over with your foot. Or if he jumped at you, you could hold out your shoe and he would bounce off

I honestly think he's in the wrong for killing it, he just shouldn't have been in a position where he had to fight it. As "dangerous" as roosters can be according to these experts in the comments, you can easily avoid confrontation. Obviously he didn't mean to kill it, nor did he deserve a felony charge/jail time, but there should be some kind of compensation (A fine or smth). Pets carry a lot of emotional value, and it hurts to lose them.

As someone who rescues roosters and chickens are one of my favorite animals, I can say it takes A LOT to kill a full grown rooster let a lone a Barred Rock. Those things are tanks. Barred Rocks are typically gentle natured, but any rooster can be aggressive. If it was this guys pet it was probably chill towards the owner and maybe tried to bluff/showed aggression to others. The best defense for yourself against a roo that is showing aggression is try to get a broom, stick or rake and give yourself distance and move out of the area C: HOWEVER, if there is kids around roosters should be under lock and key. Have it in a chicken run. Roosters can become threatened by children easily due to how erratic kids movements can be. That and if if this rooster was showing aggression it should of been in a run ALL THE TIME. Like I said above. Barred Rocks are HUGE. If it has any signs of aggression. Keep it away from others. Roosters have spurs on their legs. They get sharp and can cause serious damage. TLDR; Be responsible with your pets.

I went to a boarding school where they had chickens, and one rooster. The rooster, Keith, was an asshole, and the way this man is describing a rooster getting ready to attack seems 100 percent accurate to me. On the other hand, if you so much as _pointed_ a stick in Keith’s general direction, he’d go running. However, to be fair, Keith was a coward and would only initiate an attack if he thought your back was turned - Big Roo might have been a braver bird. And the attacks were not terribly effective. If you raised a foot in his direction he’d do a little jump kick at the bottom of your shoe and fall over as he bounced harmlessly off. Keith the rooster was an asshole, but also, as can be expected from a rooster, a moron.
