Hi from Australia Dennis, this is exactly how I service my reels. A couple of things on this reel I noticed when you disassembled /assembled it that I thought were strong features are... 2 screws on the rear of the shaft for stability.... The collar with 3 screws to hold the drag assembly in as opposed to the old retaining wire clip that on reels had a bad habit of flying off into the unknown... And finally that clip that holds the rotor nut on as opposed to the old little grub screw that sits next to it to stop it from moving, it worked but pretty fiddly. Cheers mate and subbed!

I know you only have a couple hundred subscribers which is shocking to me. I have learned so much about reel repair just in the couple weeks I have discovered this channel. I hope you continue with it. This reel repair seems to be a dying art. Can't really find anyone who knows what their doing so had to revert to doing it myself. Thanks so much.

Thank you for the kind words. I am posting these in the hope that folks continue the "dying art". Unfortunately, many manufacturers are making disposable reels these days and without product support or replacement parts, they are conditioning buyers to replace with new. I m trying to show folks that the proper maintenance and repair can make the reel last a long time. - Dennis

I know this is an older video but I hope you still look for questions. I’m totally new to saltwater/surf fishing and unfortunately didn’t think about “after vacation” maintenance. Took a new Penn last year for surf fishing and just rinsed it off in fresh water afterwards. Went again this year and it was very difficult to reel but after gently moving spool it did ok. Needless to say one of the first things I’m doing now is cleaning and re-lubricating all my spin reels. So, thank you for a very clear instructional video. Getting ready to tackle 3 Penn reels. Question, do you add lubricant to any of the bail parts?
@2ndChanceTackle
@2ndChanceTackle 5 жыл бұрын
Sure and thank you for the comments. Yes - you add oil to the line roller. You do not need oil on the pivots, they are springs, but you can spray with WD40 to flush any dirt from inbetwee the bail wire and body - Thanks for asking. Thanks for the video. Novice to the saltwater side of fishing and paying the price with not properly lubing the reel after a week of surf fishing. Hoping this video with help me dive inside the fierce 2 and figure out what’s going on. The spool seems to drop down all of a sudden as I’m reeling. I’m afraid i messed up the gears trying to turn it when I felt resistance.

That spool drop is not normal. Check for a broken crosswind gear or missing teeth on the back of the main gear when you take the reel apart. These reels are normally very durable, but parts do break under heavy load - Thanks for watching - Dennis

Hey, I have a bunch of Penn reels from my brother that were never maintained. All of them have made a recovery except the fierce 6000. The 6000 wasnt too bad except the felt washer and the shaft being stuck to the assembly. The drag will not function because of it. I can get the shaft to twist but it takes a hard clamping. I have tried soaking it in vinegar, CLR, and some WD-40 (seperatly not mixed) for about 4 days total. I'm not sure what to do next any advice is appreciated, thanks for the great videos!

Can you get the spool off? That is the first thing to do. Next, remover the drag clip under the tension knob. Then take each washer out. You should be able to push them through from the back end if they don't come out easily from the top. It her are still stuck, get an awl, small screwdriver or another item and scrape them out to the spool. These will then need to be replaced. Send me a follow up if this doesn't help answer your question - Dennis

2nd Chance Tackle the spool comes off but the shaft is stuck on the assembly it only comes off when I unscrew it from the crosswind block. I have taken out the washers, but because the shaft is stuck my drag is very high. I have soaked it in liquids to try to get it free but no success.
@2ndChanceTackle

I think you may be trying to do something that can't be done. The spool shaft is an integral part of the axle and cannot be removed. Go to the schematic available through mystic parts.com and look at the piece. Search on penn parts, spinning reels and then the Fierce model that you have. Click the down arrow to get the menu and look at the diagram. If you get the part number, you can see a picture of it under the order parts drop down. The problem you are describing now sounds like you are missing the white teflon washer that sits on the axle shaft just below the spool. Check the schematic diagram to see how it all goes together and make sure you have all of the washers and that they are in the right sequence. Send me a note if this still does not answer your question - Dennis

I am having difficulties with my Penn Fierce II 5000 reel and when attempting to service the spool shaft won't budge. @2ndChanceTackle
@2ndChanceTackle 3 жыл бұрын
Is the spool shaft stuck inside the pinion gear or the crosswind block. My bet is you have a bent axle shaft. Try this. Remove the screw from the crosswind block if you haven't done that yet. Remove the top end of the reel - the rotor. A/R. assembly and bearing tie down clamp. You should now be able to remove the pinion gear, bearing and axle shaft. Once you have it out, you may need to tap the axle shaft with a hammer while holding the pinion gear to free it. Since you don't know which side is jamming, try the top first and if it does not move, try tapping the bottom of the shaft to free it. If it is a bent axle shaft, you will need to replace it. Parts are available through Mysticparts.com a Penn Parts distributor - Dennis

So I have a fierce 3 and the drag can't be tightened all the way. I can turn the knob as tight as it will go but it never locks. Everytime I get a fish it's hard to reel it in because I'm losing line on the smaller fish. Should I just replace the drag discs?
@2ndChanceTackle
@2ndChanceTackle 4 жыл бұрын
You don't say how long you have have the reel, but the Fierce 3 is not that old and you should not have worn out the HT100 drags already. Check to make sure the white teflon washer is on the axle shaft under the spool. If it is missing or worn, that may be your issue. Id this were the Fierce 1 or 2, I would suspect the washers were torn, as those were felt , not the newer Ht-100 on the current models. If you have the 1 or 2 version, go ahead and order the newer washers as they will make a big difference. At any rate, you need to remover the washers and check what is going on inside the spool - Dennis

My new penn fierce 2 5000 got some sand it in on it's first use. I took it apart and removed the sand using your instructions which helped a lot, but after re-assembling it I am having issues with the spool being sloppy. The spool jiggles up/down and back and forth a few millimeters in all directions now, and the reel makes a faint squeaking noise when cranking the handle. I have dissassembled and reassembled it several times now looking for an issue but everything seems okay. Any idea why my spool is loose/wobbly or why the reel is squeaking faintly? I have fished it several more times and it still performs okay, but its not as smooth and quiet as It was when I got it, and the loose spool is driving me nuts.
@2ndChanceTackle
@2ndChanceTackle 4 жыл бұрын
Does the drag hold tight on your spool? If it does, then the play is coming from your crosswind block and gear. Hot much you can do about that other than to replace both and hope it resolves the problem. Take the side plate off and have a look at how and where the play is by pulling up and down on the spool while watching the axle shaft for movement. The squeak is probably due to you washing off all of the oils and grease while cleaning out the sane. Make sure that all moving parts, including the handle knob nd line roller are oiled or lubed again. Those are my best guesses - Dennis

Hmmm. First, take the reel off of the pole. After that, my first thing to do is to remove the spool and crank the reel to see if it is gear related or spool related. You may find line wrapped around the axle shaft under the spool. If the reel is hard to turn with the spool removed, then it would be mechanical and you would need to remove the side plates for a look inside. - Unfortunately, this could be caused by a lot of different things, including a bad guide on your pole (that is why I want you to remove the reel from the pole) so I have to be general in my response. @2ndChanceTackle
@2ndChanceTackle 6 жыл бұрын
Check the condition of the felt washers. If they are worn, torn, or buckling, then they would need to be replaced. I am assuming that you cleaned out the spool recess where the drag washes sit. That needs to be free of sand and grit as that would also cause the problem. I am also assuming that the metal washers are smooth and not pitted or corroded. If they are, you can usually clean them up with #0000 steel wool. A lot of folks are making the conversion on the Fierce reels from the felt washers to the Carbontex fabric washers. These add a few extra pounds of max drag, but the main reason they do this is because the Carbontex washes are much more durable. Carbontex washers are available online through smoothdrags.com and other sources. I think the washes run about $9 for a set of 3. You can reuse the metal washers if they are n good condition. Thanks for asking. Let me know if that solves the problem. - Dennis.

When I go to crank the handle, it feels like and sounds like the main gear making contact with either the pinion gear or the crosswind gear causing a noise. The description might not make sense or be vague but what do you think is causing the noise? Thanks for your help.
@2ndChanceTackle
@2ndChanceTackle 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Andy - the first thought is that this is a case / side plate issue causing a mis-alignment, Assuming you put this back together according to the schematic and have located the shims where they should be on the main gear, and have the bait feeder trip reset properly, then the problem you are describing is usually that the case is not tightened down enough, or ironically, overtightened. One will cause misalignment, the other will cause a bind. Did the side plate easily snap into place when you reinstalled it? If not, something is not reinstalled properly and will affect the operation by causing a grind. It is not that you used less grease than the manufacturer. They overload the reels when the ship them. I suggest you recheck your work and pay particular attention to the side plate during reinstall. If you do not have the schematic, you can find it at Mysticparts.com, under the Penn Parts tab of the home page. - Let me know how you do. Thank you - Dennis

I honestly do not know what it was (probably alignment and over tightening) but after I took it apart, double checked my work, and tighten it with less strength, it was all good. No more noise. Your video about servicing the shielded bearings came in handy as well. I realized that I had a bit of sand in one of the bearings that sits on the pinion gear.
