This will show you the inside mechanical structure of the Penn Fierce II 8000 fishing reel. It includes disassembly and reassembly and a description of the features and functions as well as how to perform basic maintenance on it. Also how to perform drag servicing. I have been repairing fishing reels for over 20 years. If you like this video and would like to learn more, please subscribe to my channel as I frequently update the reels I am working on to restore them.

Aloha Dennis, I recently just serviced my Penn fierce ll 8000 and now the handle is slightly loose with a wobble. When I push the handle in and turn it, it feels smooth but when I do not push the handle in, I can feel and hear the gears grinding. Any ideas on what it could be? Thank you and I learn a lot from your videos.

Sounds like you are missing the shims that go on the main gear shaft, handle side before the bering or that those shims were put on last, between the bearing and the case instead of between the gear and the bearing. I would check that first. Dennis

I just picked up this reel and rod combo for $40 - one guide and the tip are broken, hope to repair. Reel seems good, but the spool doesn't remove when the drag tensioner is removed. How hard should I bang on it ???? ( the spool should remove like in the video right? )
@2ndChanceTackle
@2ndChanceTackle 4 жыл бұрын
I think you know the answer to how hard to bang it! Don't. Remove the clip spring on top in the recess and take the drag washers out one by one. The binding is probably due to these washers getting stuck on the shaft. The washers are felt, so they can be easily removed. The metals should fall out. After the washer are out, try to remove the spool. If it is still stuck, flood the inner cavity and axle shaft with a penetrating oil like WD40 and let it sit. That should help you avoid the hammer - Dennis

Howdy! i encounter a problem with this reel. The spool is spooling like a snowcone! i have added the available washer and still doing the same thing and taking the washer out and same o same o? Is there a drag inside the reel that maybe striped? By the way nice video! I just subscribed!
@2ndChanceTackle
@2ndChanceTackle 6 жыл бұрын
If the spool is top heavy with line and has less on the bottom than the top, it usually is not a spool problem. It could be that the reel is not completing the full up and down stroke. Usually that is because there is broken line wrapped around the spool shaft below the click ratchet. Did you take the reel apart for servicing? If so, check to make sure the crosswind block is installed correctly. If it is upside down, that will limit the trade of the shaft as well. I do not believe this has anything to do with the drag washers. Let me know how you do. Thanks for asking - Dennis

I have this reel and I fished last night with it and it never dipped back over. I kept turning the reel and it would t close. Any suggestions?
@2ndChanceTackle
@2ndChanceTackle 5 жыл бұрын
Jordan - the two most common causes are a bent bail wire or a broken bail spring. Sometimes a bail wire gets bent out of shape. The causes tension on the assembly and it does not close correctly. It the bail spring is broken, then the mechanism will not fire. To check both, do the following: remove the screw on the non-trip side of the rotor and then remove the wire from that side holder. Did it spring out or just stay in the area without the screw and without tension? If there is a noticeable gap, then you need to gently bend the bail back into shape, where it fits in place without tension. To check if the bail spring is working, leave the one side detached and set the bail for casting. Manually turn the rotor and see if the bail arm trips. If it does not, or if it trips slowly, then the spring is most likely damaged and would need to be replaced. Thanks for asking - Dennis
@pmpspot
@pmpspot 5 жыл бұрын
2nd Chance Tackle I haven’t tried anything yet but the reel keeps turning with the bail open. One time it closed by itself. I’ve never had a problem with the reel and I’ve never greased it. Which part of the reel is the rotor?
@2ndChanceTackle
@2ndChanceTackle 5 жыл бұрын
@@pmpspot The rotor sits under the spool. It is the circular piece where the bail wire attaches on each side. It is called a rotor because it rotates in a circle and winds the line around the spool. It is it tripping periodically, my best guess is that the bail wire is bent - Dennis

I know I'm off topic here but I really need help is circle hooks better than j hooks
@2ndChanceTackle
@2ndChanceTackle 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Sabrina - Never off topic! That is a good question and "better" is a relative term. The J hooks have been around forever and have proven their effectiveness. One of the problems with them is that fish can such them in and the deep hook set leads to a high mortality on fish that you wish to, or have to release our to size limitations. The circle hook is broader and intended to reduce this problem. When the fish is hooked, it is more commonly lip hooked and the result is that the ones that are released tend to survive. I use the circle hooks on striped bass, which have a high release rate. I use the J hooks on Bluefish, where the restrictions on size and count are less stringent. Thanks for asking - Dennis

Personally, I have found these Fierce n Battle reels to be junk. Have already had to replace main gears in two and pinion in one. After one use the gearing became noticeably rough, which is unacceptable to me for what was paid. I'm going to sell most of my "modern" reels and stick with my older US, French, and Japan reels which are much better, in my opinion.

I changed the bearings in my reel and it sounds like a windmill when I turn the handle. The reel fishes well ,just the noise. What could it be?
@2ndChanceTackle
@2ndChanceTackle 4 жыл бұрын
Michelle - The symptom you are describing could be worn gears or misaligned gears. There are shims on each side of the main gear that help align the meshing of the main and pinion gears. Try moving the shims from one side to the other to see if the helps. Check the teeth on the main gear and pinion gear. to see if they are worn, bent or warped. If all of the bearings are good, then the gears are the most likely cause. If it were me, I would just keep fishing with it and not replace the gears. The cost of both is half the cost of a new reel. Thanks for asking - Dennis
