Thank you for sharing your experience. I just got the 4000 for $35 on Amazon. This will help me maintain and reference it when I do the maintenance on it. I also have the Penn 850ss that I bought 30 years ago, but haven't fishing with it because I am not close to the beach. As always, you videos are straight to the point and very quick and easy to follow. No surprise obnoxious music blaring at the beginning. LOL. Thanks again.

I'm glad this will help, that is my intent. The 30 year old 850 has a different drive set up to it than the one I just published, which is a newer version of the reel. I have the Penn Pursuit II 6000. I have a drag tightening problem so I just replaced the washer set. The drag still auto-tightens as the drag gets pulled. Do you have any suggestions on what I can do next?
@2ndChanceTackle4 жыл бұрын
My guess would be to check the axle shaft washer to make sure it is on there (it is a white washer that sits on top of the click ratchet under the spool.) If it is missing, it could cause a problem similar to what you are describing. The only other moving part is the drag adjuster knob. If the spring or nut is broken in the housing it is a possible cause. I can't say with certainty, these are just guesses without seeing the reel - Dennis

Something to be aware of that had me spending over 10+ hours to reassemble this reel is, the blue bearing that is housed inside of the triangle plate under the spool is a ONE-WAY bearing. So if you install this bearing upside down it will not make the reel spin even when properly assembled. You must place it properly and then attempt to seat the reel to ensure it spins before reassembling or you’ll be dealing with a very long headache.

I believe that the main difference is that they switched from felt drag washers to the HT 100 fabric washers. The balance of the reel is the same. Thanks for asking - Dennis
@fishingGator016 жыл бұрын
If your drag is sticking you need to remove the felt drag washers and replace them with greased Carbontex washers from Smooth Drag. Also there has been a problem with these reels where the spool sits on the end of the spool shaft. The spool shaft can be removed, put one end in a drill and use steel wool or very high count sandpaper to smooth out the spool shaft. The penn fierce does not have a bearing on the crosswind gear..!!! All of Penn’s reels, Persuit, Fierce, Battle use the same internal gears.

Yes - the shaft comes out the same way. Try a goor dose of penetrating oil, like WD40 and let it sit a few minutes. scrape around the shaft near the crosswind block with a razor knife or such to help unclog it, then leave the spool pn for leverage and wiggle it as you are pulling it up. That should help free it. Don't hammer the crosswind block. It is a brittle metal and can crack easily - Dennis

Thank you for an excellent and enlightening video. I use a Penn Pursuit 3 when spinning for bass in the UK. I am well pleased with the reel, but my preference is the back wind rather that rely on a clutch. Is it possible to remove the anti back wind ratchet mechanism, and if so how ? Pete from Dorset UK.
@2ndChanceTackle5 жыл бұрын
Pete - the anti-reverse clutch is what stops the reel from backwinding. It also acts as the center bearing/bushing for the pinion gear. As best as I know, you cannot remove this feature without replacing the mechanism with a bushing or bearing in it's place to steady the pinion gear. If you did that, you would never have an anti-reverse, so my answer is no don't do it. Manufacturers like Penn eliminated the anti-reverse override when they when to the clutch system. Some manufacturers have developed work arounds and you can still find the feature on their models - Dennis
@peternewbold60675 жыл бұрын
@@2ndChanceTackleHello Dennis. Thank you for your prompt reply. I thought as much. Over here in England most river anglers trot the stream with the float, using a centre pin reel or a close face reel, many of which have a back wind facility. One exception was the Abu range of C/F reels. The anti back wind on these was a rocking claw mechanism, which was easily removable and I have modified several. This makes playing a fish much more positive, akin to a centre pin. So it looks like I will have to learn to use a slipping clutch. Once again thanks for your explanation and advice. Nice making contact with you. Pete

I did this and my drag was still tight even when i took out all of the washers my drag was still very tight any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
@2ndChanceTackle4 жыл бұрын
If you took all of the drag washers out and the spool is still tight, then it is not the drags. There are only two other parts, the washer on the axle shaft and the tension adjuster knob. Check to make sure you have the washer on the axle shaft. It is usually white. If it is missing, the spool would be tight. The drab knob should not cause a problem. That failure usually results in a drag that won't tighten. If not of these work, I would replace the spool and start over - Dennis

Dennis, your tutorial is nothing but outstanding. I have recently purchased a Penn Pursuit II 8000 reel, and somebody told me I should take it apart and add more grease before I start using it. Do you think that would be a good idea, or the manufacturer added enough grease? Thank you very much, George
@2ndChanceTackle6 жыл бұрын
George - I don't think you need to re-grease these and I would not recommend overloading the reel with grease. My experience is that the reel has plenty of lubrication when it comes from the factory and overloading it can cause other problems by slowing down the reel and trapping contaminants. If you want peace of mind, you can take a look by removing the side plate. You should see plenty of blue grease inside. You can use that as a guide when you clean and re-lube the reel at the end of season. Thanks for asking - Dennis

Thank you very much for the video. I have 2 questions: I upgraded drag on penn pursuit 4000 to carbontex type washers I ordered online. Should I oil these washers? Also sometimes my drag will not increase no matter how much I tighten the drag knob. I dont have ghost drag from my braided line. Did I get the sequence wrong or is there a slight concave on the washers? Thank you very much again
@2ndChanceTackle4 жыл бұрын
Hi Caleb. Carbontex washers can go dry, or you can used a light coat of grease. I use Cals universal drag grease ad I wipe it dry after rubbing it into the grooves. The sequence from the bottom up is empty spool, carbonated washer, round metal washer, Carbontex, Keyed washer with 2 points, Carbontex, round metal washer. That should lock it down when the adjuster knob is tight. Check drag you holding the spool, not the line. If the spool is locked, but line is coming off, then you most likely have braid slip. If you do, you will need to remove the braid and put a few yards of monofilament line on first before reinstalling the braid. - Dennis

@2ndChanceTackle6 жыл бұрын
OK. These are felt drags, not my favorite drag setup, and it looks like you are having problems with them. They are probably dry and binding. Take the drag knob off and pull up on the spool. I can't imagine you breaking anything by pulling hard on it, or rocking it as you pull up. the drags are inside the top of the spool. Pull the retaining clip and then use a small screwdriver in the slot on the metal washer to remove them. Felt washers are oiled. Examine each to make sure they are not torn, then use reel oil to re-lube each one. That should stop the sticking drag problem. This seems to be a common problem as water gets in the top of the reel, washes away the oil on the felt and the drags dry and stick to the metal ones if not repeatedly serviced. I hope this helps. Let me know how you make out. - Dennis

I can only guess without seeing the reel, but my first guess would be the anti-reverse clutch would be the primary failure if the reel is assembled correctly. These are relatively simple reels, that is why they can last a long time. The key anti-reverse component is the clutch assembly, so check that first. Take the clutch and sleeve out of the body. Insert the sleeve inside the clutch and hold the sleeve on top and bottom with your fingers while turning the clutch. Turn in both directions. Is it holding - stopping in the one direction? If so, it is working properly. If it is not holding at all, then it is defective and would beed to be replaced - Dennis

The anti reverse on this reel is a bearing located under the rotor. You need to remove the rotor and replace the bearing in order to fix this. El anti inverso en este carrete es un cojinete ubicado debajo del rotor. Debe quitar el rotor y reemplazar el cojinete para solucionarlo.
