So pleased I found your channel. Emigrating from the UK to Nova Scotia this year and this is the dream eventually. Its been so great to see your process and now my kids are grown and the husband, being an engineer is kind of handy lol, what you've achieved seems a realistic goal for us as a way to enjoy our new life. There's a lot to learn but channels like yours are invaluable for information.

@@PenniacWilderness Hi there, I'm from Plymouth in Devon down in the South West. We're looking at around Dartmouth initially as we do have a daughter that at 16 is needing to finish school, the other is applying to Toronto Uni and work for my husband seems to be more abundant in that area. We need to find our feet obviously. I have however already been looking at land for sale within an hours commute and have seen some great opportunities near the coast and enroute ro Truro and even towards Greater Halifax. We're really just waiting for job offers at the moment and as my husband is military waiting until he officially finishes in June. The self build off grid lifestyle is definitely the goal though when everything that needs to happen slots into place, the big one being work lol. We gotta eat lol 😆

I like this type of video, it shows the other side of life at the cabin, good stuff! As for flying squirrels, we hang our feeder on the close line, they will actually run out on the line and jump onto the feeder, it’s funny watching them from the sunroom as some don’t quit make it 😂 today I’m hanging about 40 pails on the trees as the temps are going to be on the plus for the next week or so, I’m just over in Bairdsville so we should be making syrup about the same time, good luck.
@PenniacWilderness3 жыл бұрын
Thank you Mr Piercey. I have only seen a flying squirrel maybe once before, but I am quite sure that is what it is. My good friend works up in Perth-Andover. 40 pails should give a good syrup harvest. I am doing about 12, but hope to get some syrup too. Mine are not flowing great yet, how are your taps doing? Good luck to you too!
@bluethunder19513 жыл бұрын
Last few days have been good collecting about 50 gals per day, added another 40 pails, just finishing up 200 gals of sap today hoping to get 4 gals of syrup, the weather has slowed the run but next week is looking fair.

Awesome video Jonathan ! Definitely enjoyed a little more personal type video with you talking and narrating what’s going on. Definitely appreciated ! Certainly enjoying this earlier spring temps ! Those gray Jays are amazing and so friendly ! None really at home but at camp in Embden there are certainly some. Not there enough yet but would love to get them used to hand feeding. And they seem so into that which is great ! Take care my friend

Hi Tony! Hopefully the border will open this summer, I hope to get down your way again. The grey jays are wonderful creatures. Thank you for the feedback - it means a lot and we appreciate your support. I am trying to get the chickadees to hand feed, but they are not quite as friendly, however I hear it is possible!

Life on the homestead seems to have a handful of things to get done at any given time! Also at the same time you can't always work, you have been taking some time to enjoy your surroundings!!! This video works great for me and shows how your day could possibly be at the homestead. Please make a video process from tree to plate with pancakes, sausage, bacon, and the syrup that you make for a breakfast video(when the time comes) with family and friends! Life looks good there for you...

Hi JB! My sister keeps bringing up your comment about us building her a cabin. Will you be available to help? :) I joke, but we do hope to build one for her. Great video idea! The sap is flowing now, but not great yet. The weather has not been perfect, but I should be able to get a few litres of syrup. Take care my friend

@@PenniacWilderness I would help in anyway I can. The way you two work together is so astounding. I believe it's in your heart and there is no way you wouldn't do what she has done for you, period. I'm just one country away and willing to do what I can help you help fulfill some wishful thinking on all our minds. Besides that, she is worth the appreciation and love you have for her. above and below zero. Celsius I am assuming? Also, I see you were drilling a new hole on a tree with an old hole. What should one do to the old tap holes to protect the tree? I also agree with the idea that the bears will be invading all bird feeders soon. A problem where I live too. I am in Massachusetts and have a lake house in New Hampshire. Great video! Keep them coming! Where in NB are you? I don't need exact town, just want to look on a map and get a general idea.
@PenniacWilderness3 жыл бұрын
Hi Mike! I am far from an expert on maple syrup work. I have just left the previous holes and they seem to seal themselves off. But there may be something more I should do. I have a pretty small operation. In located in central NB, not too far from the city of Fredericton. Hope that helps! I travel to New Hampshire and Massachusetts often and hope to again when COVID is over.

I like videos run time max. 0.5 hr., no cooking, time lapse shooting if process takes a long time to complete and tell us why you did things a certain way or would redo if possible.
