Why does no one ever talk about Matt’s bass drop at the end of his verse?!! It’s by far the best part of the song!!

Scott is a "lyric baritone", meaning he has a wider than typical range. In his case, both upwards and downwards. Matt (who you called Kevin) is a lyric bass. While Scott and Matt's actual ranges overlap a great deal, what classifies them as bass vs. baritone is the _vocal texture_ they have while singing lower or higher notes. Kevin (who you called Matt) is beatboxing, percussion, and on occasion cello.
@garyblocker91354 жыл бұрын
Conflating voice parts in contemporary music with classic opera voice types invites argument. You try to make distinctions that make no practical difference in PTX arrangements & roles. Avi's range is far lower than Scott's. Matt's is slightly lower. But, Scott can usually cover the bass line and/or the bass notes in their harmonies. As a practical matter, this enables them to provide a variety of leads and a wall of sound that is hard to replicate with only 5 singers.
@xheralt10 ай бұрын
@@garyblocker9135 Avi wasn't here, and thus unmentioned, but no arguments re him. I was attempting to explain WHY, with nearly identical ranges, Scott is a baritone and Matt is a bass. If you have a better definition I would accept it, without argument. Would you take me to task for calling Avi a _basso profundo?_ Would you debate me calling Mitch a countertenor, vs. Kevin's regular tenor? Kevin's hit higher notes (Kiss From A Rose) but only in falsetto. Mitch is still in head voice in that range. Vocal texture, as I called it, being the difference.

Kristie's mom put her in voice lessons age 8. Around that time she met Mitch, both doing as many shows as possible. They went to high school with Scott and they all did as much singing as possible. They did youtubes as "The Trio". Scott got talked into trying "The Singoff" so they found Kevin and Avi (needed 5) and had one day to rehearse but won the show. Quite awesome. Watching the show is fun, very very young kids. Kristie always wanted to do shows and has. They do a lot of their own arranging as a group practice. Also awesome. The show came with a record contract but they got dropped so they started their odyssey on youtube self promoting, the results you know.
Yes he (Kevin) can do it live. Matt (white jacket) is also a bass singer and uses his voice as an instrument!

The impressive thing about beatboxing isn't the sounds produced really. The majority of them are actually quite easy to do. I can do some of them quite well. The difficult and impressive thing is keeping up a constant flow of sounds. This I absolutely cannot do.

they all have great voices, each with its own texture and delivery, and all blend well with each other. I think everyone has a preference for one or the other. Personally, I marvel at Kevin's beatboxing, although I realize that at times, Avi (previously) and Scott make some of the sounds along with hm. Not sure if Matt does, since he's new, but he has a wonderful deep warm baritone sound so he fits well. Avi had a great bass voice. I wonder if Scott and Matt can reach down that far?

I have watched your reactions to PTX and really like your concept of what makes for great musical art is conveying the essence of the music to the listener. It is kind of "becoming the music". There are multiple levels of the concept. The composing ,the lyrics, the arrangement, the performance and now days add in the visual production too. PTX excels in all these areas. I'm 75 now and sang in choir, sang barbershop, played clarinet in school and later a little blues band. I feel very fortunate to have music as a part of my life. Music actually led me to poetry and I have had a couple published and I first learned of Leonard Cohen as a poet before I learned of him as a singer/songwriter. I remember the first time I heard Sound of Silence with Simon and Garfunkle and I remember learning a Jazz version of Amazing Grace on clarinet so all of these songs done by PTX hold a special place in my heart and mind . I do not normally do not think of one version of a song being better than another. That is a false dichotomy in my mind. Music is pretty primal and speaks to a part of us that few other things can. Each version of a song will affect individuals differently and will affect the same person differently at different times of their life. When Sounds of Silence first came out the music was good but what really mattered back then was the words. We had not heard songs convey that kind of message until the "folk" era started with Bob Dylan, and later Joni Mitchell and many others. That's not to say they did not exist , it just wasn't getting broadcast . The concept of multipart harmony had been around for years though and "street groups" singing three and four part harmony were well known in most cities. It was brought onto the broadcast media by PP&M, Brothers Four, New Christy Minstrels, and others whose names have escaped my little gray cells for the moment. What hasn't escaped is the music and with a bit of luck never will. PTX is a godsend especially in this pandemic and make the "shelter in place" much more tolerable as do your reactions. So keep them up! I have gone on much too long but I wanted you to know that your thinking and your love of music (and your knowledge of it) is highly valued. Thank you. P.S. I second all the recommendations of those who preceded me here and would add that PTX has some amazing Xmas music as well. Oh, Come all ye faithful; is probably my favorite . It has changed that song for me forever. It is one time I will say it is better than any other I have heard (or sung).

Trying to analyze who does what among Pentatonix might be a difficult job. They don't have a weak member and they have incredible vocal range individually. You commented on whether Kevin (beat boxer) sounds the same live. Other than the sound tech adding a touch of reverb sometimes, Kevin is the same live vs. in-studio. But then, PTX has made it a matter of pride that they will not drop a new video if they can't perform it live. No multi-track, no auto-tune (with one or two exceptions where it was specifically in the original arrangement.)
