When I first bought my used car, it had around 142k miles and the previous owner used Mobil 1. There were like 3k miles on that oil and once it was 4k I changed to Pennzoil Platinum high mileage. It immediately felt like it was smoother and quieter. It was pretty crazy to experience firsthand. I only put Pennzoil in because of KZbin.

BMW uses Castrol. Try either Royal Purple HPS or Penzoil Ultra Platinum for yourself. “Ford Boss Me” believes it is a viscosity thing.

Not long after you presented a video of the chemical analysis of the Penz ult plat 7-8 months ago, my next oil and filter change consisted of your valuable suggestion, in conjunction with the Fram ult syn filter you suggested. With 105 K on the clock of my early 2015 Toyo Taco, 2.7 liter, the engine was significantly quieter from the moment it started. The truck has been meticulously maintained since 42 K and after a conventional oil was replaced with the Penz, my highway mileage increased immediately from 21.8 mpg to 24.6 on the first tank of gas. Your professional expertise has significantly increased the longevity and reliability of my small truck. I've only used Amsoil in my 2018 coyote F150 up until this oil change coming up. I watched a Project Farm video on a bunch of different oils that he had tested, and the Pennzoil Ultra Platinum was right there with Amsoil Signature Series. I was very impressed by the results so I looked into it and found that the price was very attractive, so I bought 30 quarts (3 oil changes...ugh) and I will be running that with a Motorcraft filter. From all of the testing that I've seen, including yours, I think I will be happy with this choice. Thanks for all that you do Rich and be blessed!

I’m on my second oil change with Penzoil platinum high mileage (can’t find the Ultra Platinum anywhere) and I’m rather impressed. Mileage has gone up in my ex-police Crown Vic (I’m finding I can do an L.A.-to-Phoenix run and still come away with around 1/4 tank left, whereas I couldn’t with brand I used to go to, which was the Valvoline extended stuff). The engine seems to run smoother and even cooler as well. About the only thing I did differently was use a Mobil-1 synthetic filter instead of a Fram Ultra Synthetic, but that was only because I couldn’t find any of the latter at my store (I AM liking the Mobil-1 filter, BTW). As far as the whole sludge thing goes, Pennzoil would have gone out of business YEARS ago if it were still an issue, especially with how car guys are especially prone to “cancel” products they don’t like. These days, competition is SOOO tight that making ANY significant mistakes in quality assurance will be a death knell. Heck- the fact Pennzoil is now owned by Shell Oil Products US (which makes some REALLY good products) is a significant upgrade in terms of quality.

Been using Mobil 1 for 30 years in everything. Never a complaint, none burned oil, and the engines stayed vey clean. But we just bought a 22 eco-boost and I'm concerned about the turbo and direct injection valve carbon. It got its first oil change with Penzoil ultra. Well see. Thanks.

I mean I never did talk bad about mobile other than the fact that it's not what everybody makes it out to be so that's not really bad that's just telling the truth, mobile is actually not that great of an oil even though you haven't had problems doesn't mean you're experience says everything for the oil. It's just mediocre oil at best

@@FordBossMe I got it. 50 years ago most of the cars I owned or worked on were 10 or so years old then. Many of them were sludged beyond belief. I've seen cars where the sludge had to be scooped out between the rocker arms. API grades were SC. When M 1 came out I started using it and never gave me a problem and kept the engines clean. I suspect most new oils are as good now. Just a habit with me. I did use Penzoil in Wifey's Eco boost hoping to forstall turbo and valve carbon if I can. Thanks for your videos . @@hugh007 This is something that we all need to remember. That information changes in the Automotive industry, so what was once true may not still be true. For example, if your car "burns oil" just use a thicker oil etc. I personally don't use Valvoline because of what I heard 15 years ago (give or take), which was that it was a crap oil and that they were relying on their brand name for sales. However I'm pretty sure that Valvoline R&D hasn't been sitting there doing nothing in the last 10-15 years. So even if it was true "back then", it more than likely isn't true TODAY. But it's still stuck in my head....

I considered using Pennzoil Ultra Platinum in my 3.5L ecoboost engine, but the label did not indicate that the oil complied with Ford specification WSS-M2C961-A1. Rich maybe you could consider doing a video comparing the various Ford oil specifications. Have a Happy and Prosperous New Year.

I have used 5/30 penzoil syn since new in my 2015 Ford GT with the 5.0 coyote engine ,when I take off the oil filler cap and shine alight to look at the chains and gears , its all still clean and new looking ,I change it every 3500 miles .

I just verified this Penzoil Ultra Platinum 5w-20 on my ford transit 350 V6 non turbo. I felt the difference right away after the 4k miles oil change from Motocraft 5W-20. It is less struggle to gain power on little throttle, and less gear downshift on the cruise at the same route. Now ... I'll monitor how long it last. With valvoline full syn i get about 3 weeks of a good feeling. With Motocraft synthetic blend I get about 2 weeks of a good feeling. Stay tuned...

I've been messing around trying out different oils in my 2008 chevy 6.0 for the last year or so 4000-mile oil changes religiously. I ran royal purple before I tried Pennzoil ultra platinum and the RP went down to about 20 psi at idol for around the last 500 miles and the pennzoil stayed around 24 psi the whole 4000 and it was hotter temp outside . Just my personal experience

I really appreciate all the work you've done on the oil testing front. You've convinced a long time Mobil 1 user to switch to Pennzoil. First question is whether Ultra is worth the extra cost over Platinum if you change oil every 5k or sooner? I have two 5.0L Coyotes in my stable. A 20 F150 and a 21 Mustang GT. F150 calls for 5w20 and Mustang 5w30. Can I use 5w30 in the F150 without warranty consequences? I have all work done at dealer and they say use what's on the oil cap for each. I definitely think 5w30 would be better. Your thoughts? Thanks in advance for your help.

I switched to Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 5w-30 on my '17 F150 5.0 after about 10k miles... so it's 4th oil change. Before that I was using Motorcraft 5w-20 syn blend. My truck had all the typical 5.0 "noises"... especially at startup. After switching to the Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 5w-30?? She's as quiet as a mouse in a church. If I didn't witness it myself I wouldn't believe it. My only problem has been finding the Ultra... so I've been having to order it online. I also use a Fram Ultra oil filter btw. But... Ultra is the real deal. 👌🏽 🇺🇸 🎅

I had my 2.0 replaced in my Edge 1 month ago. Ran their Blend for 500 miles and switched to Amsoil Signature and it made ALL THE DIFFERENCE. Was warming up in 6-9 minutes in those -30 temperatures and is so damn quiet. I'm sticking to Amsoil two times a year from here on out

dad used only pennzoil dino oil in his air cooled engines.they got very warm & i never noticed a sludging issue.nothing like quaker state did.but he raised a maintenence nut just like he was.a few of his engines still had points & condesor, so pre 1982 ? they lasted a long time of hard use for aluminum bore.pennzoil was doing something right.

I heard you mention no oil is 100% synthetic because of price. Of course the other reason is synthetic oils all have limitations so the magic is is in the blending. I found the below explanation at least understandable. It doesn't rate any brand or formulation of oil, but simply explains a little bit about why synthetic motor oil is always a blended base stock. Merry Christmas! What should we look for when buying a good quality synthetic oil? There is a pretty broad range of oils marketed as synthetic. Basically, you can determine the quality of the formulations by the recommended drain intervals. Oils made with Group III basestocks are legitimately semi-synthetic, but some are marketed as synthetic. They start as refinery basestocks, but undergo significant additional processing. They typically have a 7500 mile drain interval. On to the “true synthetics”. They use Group IV and V basestocks. The basestocks we usually think of as synthetic are polyalphaolefins (PAO). There were two problems: at first, PAOs were only available in low viscosities. Also, while they have great oxidation resistance, Viscosity Index (VI), and film strength, they have terrible solvency. They need fewer additives, but you can't keep the additives in solution. The viscosity problem was originally solved by adding another synthetic basestock, polyisobutylene (PIB). It's not as good as PAO for oxidation and some other properties, but it gave you the viscosity needed for an engine oil. The solvency problem was solved by adding a secondary basestock called a cosolvent. Originally these were esters that are commonly used as plasticizers. Oxidation again not as good as PAO and sometimes the extra solvency was too much and resulted in leaks in older cars. Then 100 cSt PAO was developed and PIB wasn't needed anymore. But PIB is less costly, some some synthetics will still use it. Then alkylated naphthalenes were developed as a better cosolvent. But again due to cost, not everyone switched. Also, the esters are still used in some high mileage formulations. Depending on what they use for the thickener and cosolvent, these oils could have recommended drain intervals from 10,000 to 20,000 miles.

Because of your testing and recommendations, I switched my wife's vehicle to the Penz ultra platinum, the last oil change. I'm also switching my 2016 3.5L naturally aspirated explorer to ultra platinum when I do its next oil change. Is it possible for you to become a Penz dealer? My son is picking up a New Explorer 23 this week. The little eco boost motor. We will be driving it back about 200 miles. I was thinking of immediately dumping the initial oil and filter after we got home to get all of the break-in metals out. Thinking of running this car on the Ford Synthetic and filters. We normally run the semi synthetic while under warranties and do filter and oil every 5K., all our cares have been 100k plus with out issues. BMW asks for all new BMW M car owners to bring their vehicles in at 1,200 miles, and BMW will change all their fluids under the car, on their dime... I had this done with a new M car I purchased, and a lot of 3k mile oil and filter changes I did and the car always ran great and used no oil between changes...

Hey Rich! I have 2021 F-150 with a 5.0. Ford owners manual calls for Ford specification WSS-M2C961-A1. I looked at penzoil platinum ultra and it says equivalent to ford wss-m2c946-B1. Could you give some insight? Is this oil better than what Ford calls for? Would it be a problem for a future warranty claim? I change my oil at every 3-4k miles MAX. Take care!

I have a 2019 mustang gt 5.0. Tried the ultra platinum and heard the typewriter tick. So then I just tried the pennzoil platinum and the typewriter tick went away.

ODD, type writer tick is inherent to oil changes in general and no matter that oil it's typically and issue, what clears up the tick is usually higher octane fuel NOT OIL

@@FordBossMe I’ve always ran 93 octane have to in these 12:1 motors. I also have 2020 mustang gt to and it like the regular platinum oil better it quieter to on that oil. And makes more noise with the ultra platinum oil. I just put in what the motor seems to like. Just sharing my opinion.

if its 5w30, and your car is 5w30 It can clear the bearing tolerances. However, the GM Dexos rating is more for like warranties. Especially on brand new vehicles.. Probably stems from money reasons. Brand partnerships. One good example is Royal Purple's High Performance Street line of oils. None of them are Dexos. But yes, even base oil chemistries can be different. Here in Montana, we have an oil refinery named CHS Cenex (which I work at) They developed a 5w40 diesel engine oil called Cenex Maxtron Enviro-Edge, and they created a polymer that represents a pentagon. I've been running it in my 6.0 powerstroke below zero here for the last 3 weeks. Its been interesting. If they market these oils for $200,000+farm equipment, it has to have some serious qualities. Later on, I will switch it out with RP HPS 10w40 and I will be listening to those injectors for a long time. Shell is a bigger company, they make clean oils. So clean, so pure. I happened to notice my Malibu eats pennzoil ultra/platinum a lot more. As far as shear stability, and over all film strength. Until we get a channel that has qualified testing it will be hard to guess. Timken bearing testers are not usually considered accurate. A man who runs the '540 Rat Blog' claims PSI film strengths of oils and has his own database-but do take it with a grain of salt as if he cannot prove it with setup, data, and be able to repeat it... well it doesn't fall under science. But it does make an interesting data set to get an idea, if your experience matches your findings.

People can run Walmart's Supertech synthetic for that matter. All three oils will get you to 250,000 miles at which point for most people, their vehicle is ready for the shit can (paint, interior, and driveline is worn out or the car's styling is obsolete).

Last time I researched this a few years ago…Pennzoil and fiat(Chrysler) had a joint venture…hence the oil requirement for dodge / Chrysler that only Pennzoil met. If you didn’t use Pennzoil the factory warranty was void: don’t like this about a company. I’m considering switching to Pennzoil but I’m concerned about their marketing ploys. Plus I’m old enough to remember the Pennzoil issues in the 70’s

I still go buy motorcraft or royal purple VS using what I have. You know how it is almost 40 years of thinking something is crap its hard to get the salty taste out of your mouth. The SRT label is just advertising to make it seem like a racing oil, which it is not. No car manufacturer can put high viscosity, competition oil with +2x ZDDP [environmentally toxic and dangerous to catalysts btw] and no molybdenum & boron in road-going, passenger, & emissions-approved vehicles. Ultra platinum is the best Pennzoil synthetic that is more robust thus has a longer service interval to account for the SRT performance/hotter & faster/harder running engines. The label basically just says hey, we're doing our job appropriately.

For future commenters if you looking for Pennzoil Ultra Platinum the only retailers that carry it is Amazon, Local Napa Store, Walmart’s Online. Some of y’all are getting it confused saying you brought pennzoil ultra at Walmart no you brought regular pennzoil platinum you have to check the label just because it’s yellow and shiny doesn’t mean you brought pennzoil ultra.
