Let's discuss why people, ubisoft in particular have seemingly forgotten that Assassins are cool. I want to talk about what may have caused this shift in perception, and what I think the benefits are of us returning to including assassins in ac games (aside from the obvious)

The original creative director of Assassin's Creed said that he was tired of videogames about killing people. I felt in that way many years ago too. In my opinion the important thing in these games is the main story and how playing makes us feel. Accurate mechanics and good plot. I don't care if the story is about assassins vs templars or whatever, I just want a good story that keeps me hooked because these games have that potential.

I think they made this change gradually because the assassin fantasy is a niche while historical fantasy is more general; and thus marketable to a larger audience. It’s been moving in that direction since AC3, as they started to prioritize historical setting, then making a game around it. While I *heavily* prefer the assassin fantasy, a game like Black Flag shows how a balance between the two can be achieved. Valhalla showed that this balance might be beyond Ubisoft’s creative abilities now (likely because of corporate). Red will be another opportunity for Ubi to prove themselves in balancing historical fantasy with assassin fantasy, and it’ll be interesting to see how that goes…

Ubisoft needs to understand the same thing many Superhero movies need to understand, that fans care for the lore, costume design and rules of the franchise they consume and love. When they start playing around with those things without being careful, then the identity of the product starts waning and fanbase getting angry. Assassin's Creed without Assassins is like having Star Wars without the Jedi. It simply stops being what it is.

I don't want to AC to end. Many fans keep saying "should've with AC4". Man, no other game will let you experience historical places like AC does. It's the closest we can get from a time machine. Could be like Fifa, every year a new AC game, i don't mind. Keep milking down to the last bit of human history. Not just empty landscape with bad story like Odyssey. And if does have empty landscape, at least have a great story, like Black Flag. The thing I miss the most in AC games is the mistery and thrill it had before.

Another great video. Keep up the great work!! Also, I think ubisoft knows that the Ac fan base wants the assassin's back especially since the next 2 games Code Red and Hexe both are set during the right time periods of assassins vs templars. Instead of the hidden ones vs templars (*Spoilers* at the end of ac valhalla u see the order of ancients become the templars). So I am a little bit more optimistic knowing that fact. But its ubisoft so who knows what they will do🤣

I personally don't see why people hate the RPG games and people don't feel like assassins in those games. I felt like a spartan and assassin in Odyssey. Alexios or Kassandra can be stealthy, the game lets you do that and I don't mind that. The game focuses on other parts of the franchise which is quite interesting as well. I want more games focused on the Creed, and the assassins as they continue their fight or struggle. I also want the games to show off history. Odyssey and Origins are breathtakingly beautiful and their historical aspects make them amazing. I also think we can't say some fans can't like the franchise because of the newer games. Origins is my favorite and I will stand by the fact that the RPGs don't feel like Witcher clones. I see that argument as a way for fans of the older games to just hate the newer games. Witcher doesn't give me the spartan, viking, medjay, or assassin fantasy like the AC games do. I want AC to dive deep into history, philosophically and historically. Thats ine reason a game that takes Takkar and makes him some precursor assassin would be badass since he practically does things like the RPG protagonists. The franchise has the best pirate game, and the best game set in Ancient Egypt. I'd argue no other game competes in Ancient Greece and probably wouldn't unless Larion or the studio behind Ghosts of Tsushima say we want to be a better Ubisoft.

Agree with just about every syllable here. But let’s be honest, Ubisoft has not only attributed things wrong, but have also painted themselves into a corner by now welcoming in the section of new fans who couldn’t give an ass about the core pillars of what made the old games. Just today I got an asinine comment to a parkour video I made on modded manual jump for mirage, saying how is perfectly fine or even preferable for ubi to not have a good, deep system because “they need their energy focused elsewhere or else there won’t be much content at all” because “people don’t just run around the map”. The thing is that while an assassin focused game for the rpg settings might have sold just as well if not more, it’s definitely not attracting the kind of players that will say that. But a shit ton of those players have indeed made Ubisoft a lot of money, and no big corporation will be able to turn down money that they’ve already got once if not all three times. The best case scenario is if ubi diverge into different focuses, a game for each type of thing. But even then, it’s still going to be frequent titles that bears only the name of assassin’s creed, because ubi also knows that the ip contributes a lot and is too scared to set up a new ip for that. That is of course if they don’t make another flop in the rpg genre ala unity and gets scared into panick mode again.

For me, as long as I can act like a true assassin (original hashashin), and use their tactics, and getting a nice visuals with a good diverse gameplay, then I don't care whether I got a dense/crowded city or less crowded/open fields, neither a unity parkour or just valhalla parkour, nor I got a hidden blade or just a small dagger. The real assassins always aimed to reach a specific target by spying, gathering infos, and striking with only one clean kill, most of the time they attacked from through crowds and others by climbing to their target's high castle rooms, never killing any guard and make it clear to be a direct message of unstoppablety, some sorta psychological warfare Assassin's creed was loyal to this in almost every game and for me that's more than enough to bring me in, I want to point that I really hate the lore (isu, artifacts, modern day... Etc) and I think it's just laziness to get away from diving into real politics of history but yeah it's just a video game to enjoy

I think there are also a lot of historical periods and more relevantly, perspectives on such historical periods, that can cause hesitation. Assassins as historical figures can be hard to discuss on a philosophical or moral level if the audience is heavily invested in their perspective of history. Even if these games are an assassin FANTASY, the historical periods can still hold significance to many. I don’t think any one of these games has released without some level of worry with how the time period, and the conflict of the historical period, will be depicted. Ubisoft does try to keep AC relevant to current world events even when exploring conflicts of the past, often focusing on areas or regions that connect to current topics or events in one way or another.

Assassins are still cool, I just think with games like Odyssey and Valhalla, Ubi was too busy with numbers and trends pleasing, turning up what's popular instead of what's actually quality and good about AC. And at this point, I think they should accommodate both playstyles. They cannot afford to lose their new player fanbase who preferred the games who stray away from being an assassin. Which is why I feel like going forward, AC needs to bring the 2 protagonist gameplay style to AC to compliment both playstyles. Or bring back multiplayer while still have singleplayer. And also space out the games release more in order to develop more on the game, increasing quality instead of quantity. Too much coming out from a franchise / good thing can be bad. So Ubi needs to slow their horses on these AC games. Give everyone an ample amount of time to get their hands on their latest AC game, and at least 3 years later, release another one? Or 4 years if 3 is a bit too soon? I just hope the AC franchise going forward raises quality more than quantity. And accommodate both playstyles. That's all.

honestly, the modern day/animus idea has a tonne of potential. Assassins less so, but it's still a cool fantasy. But in my opinion, both those can go if it means having a historical action adventure that has real respect for history. The direction of valhalla is worrying. I'm the type of player that refused to upgrade my armor in AC2 because I thought the bulky metal would be to heavy for an agile assassin to wear. I really want to get immersed in a realistic image of history.

I enjoy the rpg ACs however I much prefer the older games and how they were all connected and cohesive and felt very unique. Now it seems like they just keep trying new things, like throwing shit at the wall and seeing what’ll stick. It’s like since the rpg games AC has had an identity crisis and it still can’t really lock down what it’s supposed to be. Back in the day Ubisoft knew exactly what AC was and they nailed it.

I've loved every AC game since the first one and I love the RPGs. I just feel like the leadership needs to change to be more daring. Sadly it seems a shallow ocean is more financially viable in the short term which is all that seems to matter to Ubisoft. They copied CD Project Red's gameplay model with the Wither 3 but sadly not their business model of devoting to a single title. Year over year releases simply don't work for deep narrative driven games. Also what's their issue with female protagonists? Evie Fry, Kassandra and female Eivor are easily some of their best characters but are buried in marketing and last minute leadership decisions.

Well said. I don’t mind the RPG level system but that’s not what made AC game feel like Assassin. It’s the story and the mythology that surrounds the creed what made the Assassins feel special. It's a shame that assassin's creed started as like, a more reality-based story where you're essentially a superhero without the "super", where you were basically batman having to work in the shadows and be infamous but accomplishing meaningful change all based in stuff that actually happened. That's such a fresh gem of a concept that could've been honed into an Ultimate version of itself like fromsoft has done with dark souls and elden ring, but instead it's changed into something else completely. They just need to stop cutting off the stories of their games. Arno wasn't a great character, but was a good character and Elise was too, the problem is that the game has little to no story. It's just go there and kill the target, the story is never intresting because it's as deep as the water on your table after you cleaned your house. Same with Rogue. All the characters, the way the story was going and the possible ways it could've went could've made that game the fan favorite, but Ubisoft cut the story and the budget, decided to make what could've been the best game in the franchise a game that people easily forgot. Similar story for AC Victory, they had everything the fans asked for and decided to cut all off. Ubisoft had probably wasted a 500 million dollar possibility because they underrated the gems they had. Shay and Arno could've easily had 2 games at least and become some of the most loved characters of the franchise, while for AC Victory they had everything the fans wanted and decided to scrap it all and then make the opposite of that
