I wanted to go through some of my favourite assassin's creed quotes and explain how i interpret them and what I think of them. i think these games can be deeply philosophical and make very interesting commentary on a lot of philosophical notions, so i thought it would be fun to dive into some.

And him coming to terms with and realizing what his life has lead to, and the consequences of what's done via this quote is such a poetic way to summarize his arc.

That's why Black Flag is probably my favorite. Edward wasn't born into the creed, nor was he from nobility or a member of any tribe: he was a greedy and ambitious criminal out for himself. He's fundamentally a complete bastard who abandoned his wife in pursuit of wealth because the simple life of responsibility just wasn't good enough for him. But he's forced to recognize the damage he's caused and voluntarily seek redemption and atonement. He got exactly what he thought he wanted only to realize he'd lost what really mattered.

Accepting the truth of reality and yet still standing up for your beliefs and ideals non-the-less. This lines from Connors speach resonate with me a lot and the entire speech just makes Connor a far better character than his depiction in the story of AC3, sad that it was cut out of it.

A favourite of mine. "The world is a tapestry of many colors and patterns. A just leader would celebrate this, not seek to unravel it." It's a great window into Suleiman's philosophy. In the past, acceptance of diversity was accepted out of necessity as empires like the Mongol Empire spanned multiple regions and cultures. Prince Suleiman sees beauty in the uncontrollable differences between cultures.

The quote that has stuck with me since i heard it is Frederico and Ezios words to each other. "It is a good life we lead brother May it never change And may it never change us" i really adore this so much. Its the hope and beauty they see , the love of family and how much they treasure each other. i think frederico's death really did a number on ezio's life.

When I first played AC1 and heard the famous line "Nothing is True and Everything is Permitted" I always looked at it with such curious eyes. When Revelations gave it's explanation I couldn't help but agree since I've grown both personally and seeing Ezio learn his morals throughout his trilogy. AC3 Taught me the value of how differing perspectives will always lead to friction regardless of how hard someone tries to bridge the gap.

This video is completely wrong about the Assassins and Templars ideologies, Assassins fight for absolute freedom, Templars fight for freedom of individuals, those individuals are in our real life are Capitalists, when freedom of the majority is what Assassins are fighting for, which is socialism, everyone to be free and have some sort of autonomy of not being controlled by no individuals, Assassins are for the freedom for all, Templars are for control under a system that would eventually control the majority once they get thier hands on the pieces od eden, also the video publisher did not include the epic Ezio speech where he literally says there is no book to follow, follow your own path ( Atheism ).

The spaniard is the only philosopher we need. i feel that the ac4 quote is even more philosophical than the rest because it is philosophical in nature, one does not come to that conclusion or question without thinking deepely in oneself and reflect on what the driving factor in the persons life is, or what it could have been if ones surroundings was different. it is an interpretation of the meaning of life, or if there is a meaning other than the meaning we get fed at birth or the one we give ourselfs if the things we are meant to strive for does not suit our "souls" and the life we long for. my favourite quote is no quote at all, it is the scene when connor gets back to his village and realises that everything he had done just to save his tribe never did, and we get to see him reflect on what it was all for. then him understanding that there is a bigger picture he doesn't really compute quite yet but that we can never give up because there is alwways someone else in that same situation that you might be able to do something for.

Love this, reminds me of the times when I was still in school and used to stealthily sneak interpretations of ac quotes into some essay or exam questions lmao. Even now at university it's still fun to rephrase some references and include them in papers from time to time. Makes me marvel at the depth and ambiguity of some quotes and their sense. There's a lot of philosiphical moments I really like. Ranging from short and simple quotes to full on debates. It's hard to pick a most favourite for me, but the one that I keep remembering the most is when Conner and Haytham are on the rooftop and Conner asks Haytham what the templars truly want. It comes to a point where Haytham said that assassins had a more noble goal of peace instead of freedom. It's so simple when he says directly how freedom is an invitation to chaos and to look at the revolution itself as proof, so simple that it actually works to challange the idea that freedom is peace or at least good in a capacity. And right after Conner's response, Haytham gives an idea of how politics truly work that many people would believe and may be true in the real world today. It may not even be directly philosophical at times, but it paused me to really think about the words he said and believed. So I'd say it counts.

I always thought that when Ezio was explaining the motto of the creed, he was in essence saying that as a shepherd tends to his flock, the assassins tend to the people and make sure that society doesn't come crumbling down by taking out those that wish to control and subjugate it to their will and control. The second part is him saying that when one does this, he has to live with the consequences of him doing what he does to make sure society is still held together, whether they turn out for better or worse is up to society, the flock if you will.

After looking through all these comments, and maybe I missed it, but I didn’t see any quotes from AC Valhalla. While not a true AC game, I still think there are some good quotes in there. First one comes from Basim talking to Eivor around the fire: "Children, they bewilder you. They can cause you so much worry, fill you with joy. Even stop your heart. And if you're lucky, they replace you." Seeing this through the eyes of a parent it resonates deeply because that’s what being a parent is like. I like to think people thought this way around 850AD when ACV would take place, and even 1100+ years later that message still holds true. Some feelings will always stand the test of time. Our species has evolved greatly throughout the years physically, mentally, intellectually, yet we will all share some of the same feelings as those who have come before. In that same scene he [Basim] also says “But a man you trust with anything… can take everything.” This message can be applied to almost all the stories in the AC series, as well as real life implications. Altaïr trusted Al Mualim and took away his rank in the beginning; Ezio with his father and brother; Shay with Achilles, Liam, and Hope; Arno with Elise and somewhat Bellic; Aya with Cleopatra; Eivor with Fulke taking Sigurd. The final one comes from Eivor when he says "Of all the battles a man can fight, the war against himself is the hardest to win." This is one of the realest quotes because it may not be a fight of maturity (Altaïr), but a fight to get over someone (Arno, Bayek, Connor, Edward), or a literally fight within themselves like Basim who not only possesses himself, but the likeness of Loki. Everyone goes through tough times and battles have occurred that have taken many, but out of all these fights, sometimes the greatest fight to someone is themselves. I really enjoy your content, been binging it for the past few days now!

I love the whole walking sequence with Kristina in Masiaf Castle, it's just hard to pick one. I love it when Ezio explains the creed to Kristina, I love Ezio's monologue to Desmond when he entered the vault, all of it. I guess another quote I don't see much get talked about is when Ezio said to Kristina that he wants to let go all of the assassin stuff and live for himself. Something about him saying that it's time to live for himself and let go gives me chills. Maybe it's because I've always listened to other people and do things their way all the time, that it's comforting to hear that part. I decided to go back to college & take my desired course last year is somewhat my way of "living for myself." It's not an easy course & I struggle to make the grade, but I'm content with it, knowing that all this time, this is what I want to do for my life.

I comment I might make is when you said I think about history forgetting what we do for others, while that is generally true, I think there is also a value for people to do things for others, one side of that being because of what, it does if many do it and that doing good for others is sometimes better when brought by more than just one person. Did you read the Alamut novel, that inspired the first game? Al Mualim's debates with Altair are almost ripped straight from the pages. That book gave me a new appreciation for the series and the Assassin order itself. It also has the best breakdown of the creed's motto in it. Hassan-i Sabbah is a very interesting character. I believe the atheistic angle of the series is one of it's weakest traits, given what the Isu do and the question about creation of the species and such. But I see why that won't be a priority in a best selling video game series.

Look up the artist maria miesenberger. She works with art in the black/white and grey spectrum. She has an textileillustration that is a scan of her own brain. And in hit cross/ swastikas in white, black and grey symbolizing our morality. That we as individuals have evil the black, but also the pure good that is white. But we mostly are in the grey area. Always shifting. Moving. Her story comes from her father who had a farm in malthausern, Austria. During the german occupation there was a nazi concentration camp there and Marias father provided the SS guards with products like butter, eggs etc. So he knew what was going on in the camp. But he didnt do anything to oppose the nazis because he was afraid his family would suffer. So he kept sileny and after ww2 he moved to sweden. But he had a lot of regret and anxiety. These feelings influenced maria to feel responsibly for what happened. To know but not act. Which made her reflect on the human morality. I often think of this and i see this in assassins creed as well. I work at the museum in which the said art was exhibited. As a guide. And it is interesting how the philosophy from assassins creed has made an impact on my life.

I’m glad you brought up Black Flag. I’m a bit of a fanboy for it but I really believe the writing of the game was phenomenal. Personally I also love the cutscene where Edward becomes an Assassin but it’s not so much philosophical as it is just “humbling” in a sense. While I agree the quote "everything is permitted, and nothing true" is an amazing quote, but it doesn't come from the game, it was written by Vladamir Bartol in the novel called "Alamut". I couldn't recommend it more, it is a great novel!

Bro today I was playing rogue and I developed a " what if " story, like what if Adewale was speared instead of Achilles, Ade would have operated from Davenport homestead as both were good friends and also Ade was growing old. Then Conner would have met Adewale because as we know his village head intructed him to. Also seeing that Adewale is more experienced assassin than Achilles and the fact that Adewale has worked with Conner's grandfather EDWARD would have uncovered an extra layer of story, plus Conner would have become even more deadlier and smart. What do you think ?

I feel like Star Wars is pretty universally considered (even by it's creator) to have very purposefully simplistic philosophy. Some people like the franchize because of all historical settings, but one of the reasons I like it is because of the philosophy, like Altaïr's codex, the different takes on life after assassinations(which I miss in Odyssey, but then again, it's supstitued by quotes when you reveal the Cultists)and such. The second part of the Revalations quote mentioned stuck with me. I took it as we must take responcibility for what we do,as often people blame someone or something else for bad things. Also, I see in it how Ezio is done with the Creed as in Brotherhood he's againsts blindly following the truth and to not be limited by morality and law, yet in Revalations it's about action being on you(us?), it's about being an active agent. For Arno's ateistical take, I got it as dissapointment from the aftermath of the final mission.

Someone who realises the harsh reality of the conflict between the two factions. At this point Connor has lost his Mentor, his best friend, the allies he thought he could rely on and now his Father who he hoped he could at least change or at the very least be able to spare him. All of this is lost to him and despite being in what should be his lowest point in his life he continues to march forward and doing what he believes is best for the people.

@@TheSpaniardAssassin There are at least like 5 or so games. It has a very intruiging story about fate, time, morality and what can we do to change our destiny. Kain becomes a vampire and raises several generals, each with their own domain over Nosgoth, but one of the surpassed Kain in evolution, but was cast down for it and he becomes a wraith who feeds on souls and can shift between the physical and spiritual planes. Granted they are very dated games but the story is what makes them great. There is also time travel involved which makes it hard to understand things until you've gone through the story from the Legacy of Kain games and the 2 Soul Reaver games and Defiance. So sad they won't continue the game anymore so it's left on a bit of a cliffhanger at the end of Defiance. You don't have to play through the games (because they are janky and dated by today's standards), you can just look up videos with just the cutscenes, I think there is a video that has all cutscenes from the whole series on KZbin

Arno's sentiments which he shares at the end of Unity, weren't as uncommon as one might think for the time period. During the French "Revolution", Christian clergy was guillotined and the Churches that weren't burnt like the Notre Dame were rededicated to the "god of Reason" by the radical Jacobins (basically a form of post-enlightenment deism). The anti-royalists (Girondins and Jacobins) considered religion a tool of the monarchy. This anti-monarchism is one of the main causes of atheism among the French today.

I understand Assassins Creed takes place in a universe where certainly there is no God. In our universe however, I am religious, and yet I learn and improve from most of what the assassins live for and preach. Unlike Altairs prediction we must truly understand the ideals we live by, and, free of impediment, improve from the lessons thought by even our 'enemies'. I'm surprised Ezio's speech from the Bonfire of the Vanities DLC wasn't mentioned. Also Haytham's speech to Connor on freedom being an invitation to chaos and the people not being the ones who chose Washington but rather privileged cowards who feign affection really shows the flaws in the Assassins' beliefs and who really gets to decide in the Revolution.

@@TheSpaniardAssassin I subscribed today to your channel and I've been following it for quite some time now, but I want you to remember: I AM the true AC fan. I've played and loved all of them (except for Rogue, the only "bad" AC and quite an unnecessary one, but not without its highlights). Always remember, your are talking to the master assassin! I'm playing Valhalla now and I can see that the community is divided when talking about this one in particular. I don't remember, but I guess you've said bad things about it too. I'm 220 hours in and I'll tell you that I'm loving it. It's the most complicated game to review that I have ever played in my life. There are so many stupid and bad things in this game, but also some of the best too. Impossible to say "it's bad" or "it's great". I'm only saying all of this to stop this thing of crapping all over it. We should enjoy art less for what we wanted it to be and more for what it is. I always disliked Beethoven's 8th because I wanted it to be more like the 4th and the 2nd, but then I started to see the piece for what it is and even though it's my least favorite symphony of the 9, I can get some appreciation now. That's just my food for thought for everyone hating on Valhalla and sometimes Odyssey. Damn I wrote too much.

I think Altair starts to understand the dogmatic nature of the creed at the end of his life. He sends everyone away from Masyaf because he recognizes that he isn't a god, and they shouldn't be following him blindly.
