My brother tried cooking habenero peppers on a frying pan with the soreno peppers, which eventually the heat and oils from the peppers created this cloud in this house causing everyone to cough and gag and sneeze because there was this spice cloud in the air we were breathing in and choking on. Kristin Howard could be different where I live and I’m talking security not fire but we use duress alarms at work. We get charged if it’s a false alarm and don’t inform them, if it’s a genuine situation but is solved before they show up we aren’t charged.

@@kristinhoward5077 I'm not sure where you are located but mostly in the United States the fire department is a tax-funded government-related department. Hence everyone basically chips in for it anyways though tax dollars to have around in case of possible emergencies. Unless an ambulance is used, they shouldn't be charging anything afterwards. There are some small towns and counties out there where the local legislature doesn't have a required tax and so it's optional or it's a privately run service. In those places, if you didn't opt to pay, then either they charge you later or just let your house burn down.

In culinary school, we were making Coq au vin which requires you to burn off the alcohol with a flame. Well, I thought the flame had gone out so I dumped the wine in the pan and it burst into a huge flame scaring myself and my class mates. No one got burnt but it was scary.

When I first started learning to bake I needed to soften the butter before baking with it, so I put it in the microwave for about 20 seconds, what could go wrong...... I LEFT THE WRAPPER ON... in England the wrappers on butter are made of metal (foil).... lightning struck in the microwave I prayed that I didn’t break the microwave... thank goodness I didn’t.

I have a few fire stories. 1. My sister used a little grill at our table and it caught the table on fire. 2. A different sister tried to make a grilled cheese in a toaster and it made toaster catch on fire. 3. My dad use a regular backyard grill and it caught on fire completely 4. I was boiling vegetables and I forgot it on the stove and I think I fell asleep for a few hours. My cat was meowing at my door but she normally does that, but when I finally got up, I realized the apartment was !completely! filled with smoke and my veggies and pot were charred black and my cat was on the top of the cupboards in fear. Had to open the door and let the smoke out, which filled up the apartment hallways. The burnt smell lingered for quite a while.

Another horror story: I was house sitting and decided I wanted to make beans in a pressure cooker. I had NEVER used one before. I did research, watched videos, I was confidant I could do it. I turned off the heat after about 20 mins and released the pressure right away. A VOLCANO of hot bean juice bursts out of the pressure valve and sprays all over me, the stove, the ceiling. It was a disaster. And the beans had not fully cooked.

I had a good chef knife that I spent around $100 on. I was treating it carefully. Immediately washed, dried, and back in the box after every use. I wanted it to last. My roommate at the time hated my other knives, which were crap to be fair, and always wanted to use the good knife. Well this time he opens the box upside down. The knife starts to fall. He panics and grabs it. By the blade. So he immediately drops it again. Thankfully it misses his feet. He freaks out and is bleeding all over the place. I do first aid, rinse, gauze, pressure, elevation, etc. And we take a Lyft to the hospital cause he needs stitches. Three hours later we're home. He mops up the blood, and my knife is fucked up. Tip bent over and blade chipped. He was fine in the end, just a scar. But I'm still out on a knife I expected to have for decades.

I have a few screw-up stories involving my mom, but this one is one of the craziest. It happened one October day when I was 12. My mom wanted to make some lasagna for dinner, so she did. She put the ingredients together and put it in the oven, then went to take a soak in the tub. After a little while, my sister and I heard the oven go off. We were confused, because mom had set the oven timer for a lot longer than that, so we went to tell her. She instantly raced to the kitchen, where a nasty smell had began to come from the oven. Turns out the oven had somehow locked from the inside and it and the lasagna had burned, totaling Said oven. Many swear words were said that afternoon. Long story short, A. We had to go out for dinner that night, B. We had to get a new oven, and C. We had to open all the windows to air out the house. It was mom’s birthday, too. What a day.

Worked in a commercial cupcake bakery for 3 years. Had a bakers assistant who was dumber than rocks. She was making a triple batch of caramel sauce. She wasnt smarter than the induction burner, so she burnt the caramel. I told her she had to get rid of the burnt caramel before the end of her shift. Figure it out. Her solution to the problem? She took a plastic dairy crate. And lined it with 3 black garbage bags. She then took still wicked hot caramel and poured it into the bags. I came back into the kitchen to her standing in a puddle of caramel, and she was saying "why did it melt the bags!!?"

My disasters always happen ON me; the biggest was when my tongs slipped from my hand while I was frying chips, and the oil splashed me right in the face. Through the panic, I was stable enough to wipe the oil off so it didn't keep cooking my skin, and then the PANIC panic set in, which prompted me to run and wash my face- not to stop the pain or anything, but to avoid any acne. It's a funny story, and the scars have healed now, but the takeaway is to make sure that your tongs aren't cheep or stiff. Or your mom will ban you from making chips for a year, and you'll go to school the next day with everyone looking away because it looks like you just got attacked by... Well, hot oil. Even the teachers.

What is up with people putting s*** in the oven that's flammable? Anytime I move anywhere or have new roommates I always have to check the f****** ovens because one of my roommates used to put her pans full of grease in the oven instead of cleaning it and I almost set the house on fire because she had left one in the oven before I start to cook. Thankfully something said to me check the oven right after I turned it on before it caught fire. Even my best friend-we almost caught her house on fire because I told her I was preheating the oven for some tater tots and she was like okay but neglected to tell me that she left a pizza box in the oven. 20 minutes later the firefighters came and use those huge fans to blow the smoke out of her apartment.
