I think placing bathrooms in unusual places (like the kitchen) is a fairly normal practice in Russia. They upgrade the building but either don't want to, or can't due to building codes/restriction, put in new drainage and supply piping, so they put it next to wherever it's already available, which is why it's commonly seen in the kitchens of older houses. In the case of the toilet on the stairway, that was the best place to position the toilet so it could reach the drainage pipe in the building.

I used to work as home health aide. Had a client who lived in a small, but very cute house. Her very small bathroom, full bath, but only room for 1 person, had for some strange reason, 2 small sinks. College I went to NDSU (screw the Bison BTW) the summer before I joined built an amphitheater style seating just outside the main student building. It was built into the ground so you walked down into it. Neat little thing, but no one put a drain in the bottom of it. I was laughing so hard at it I was getting started at. Since this was North Dakota, winter meant lots of snow, and come spring, lots of run off from melting. The seating flooded and because it was so close to the main building, backed up in there and flooded the basement as well. Spring semester they have to pump the water out, rip out the seating, and then rebuild it, this time with a drain. Gods know how much of my tuition went towards this little fuck up.

You take those off, you grab a Stanley knife(or an actual seam ripper if you have one), take out the seams/stitches that limit pocket size and shape your pockets to whatever size you want.
