I do not believe his story that someone broke in and JUST stole the plaintiff's dog and not the other dog or any other valuables in the house. How would anyone even know that dog was there in the first place to streal it? And the fact that he doesn't seem AT ALL sorry for the fact that the dog went missing in his care, and his general lack of concern, given that the dog was left in his care only proves that.

I'd be curious as to whether anyone checked with the landlord. I know if I had a tenant who had an approved dog on the lease and let it crap in one of the rooms as a matter of habit, I'd be quick about removing any new, non-lease approved dogs that showed up.
