1:48:28 in, I think that women were expected to stay home due to the death of war, disease etc. The safest way for them to survive and to ensure human survival(conceiving other children to ensure survival of human race) was to stay home. There were women warriors too, but typically women were either seen as inferior and weak or they were recognized as the reason why war can continue, their ability to reproduce. That's just my theory though.
