i was extremely disappointed in the lack of “magic” and the “whimsical” feel in the casino. Adding hermes in the scene was the downfall of this episode, he gave away that time can move faster, and offered them a free ride. Which in my opinion was a mistake.

I don't even mind the kids immediately know that eating anything will get them trapped as soon as they walk in from the myths. As since it is being pumped into the air and not in the food they still lose track of time. Which is a nice twist as they still get trapped despite their precautions. But the problem lies in how the trio realizes several days has passed. Does Percy slowly figure it out by talking to a kid from a different decade? Nope. Hermes just tells them. Percy never gets to use his wit, everything is just laid for him. What is the point of telling a story in a visual medium if the characters are just told everything? Having them know that the hotel is a trap both kills the tension and creates a "show don't tell" issue.

@@-Sai you know you just reminded me of something I learned the other day. A non book reader who is reacting to the show actually figured out that the Lotus Casino was pumping the lotus flowers into the air because he heard of the Las Vegas Casinos myth about how the casinos pump extra oxygen into the air to make ppl disoriented and less aware of what they were doing in the casino. Thus making them “trapped” and bound to gamble away more. So he used that reference and applied it to the show and he was right as he continued watching the episode. And I was really surprised because I never heard of that myth. Also it was really solid of a prediction.. for someone who didn’t know anything abt PJO they were kinda cooking. I’m not saying this reference was confirmed by the show runners… but if they did reference it into the writing id say it was kinda smart. It’s a similar phenomena of how ppl who never read the books immediately understand the irony of Los Angeles being ghe entrance to the underworld.
@thomaspunt2646

I know this is heresy among PJO fans but the movie did the Lotus Hotel better than the book itself. Considering it was inspired by the Island of the Lotus Eaters from the Odyssey where Odysseus's crew eat lotus flowers and forgot about their quest, having Percy, Grover, and Annabeth eat lotus flowers and forget about their quest made sense as a way of transplanting something from Greek mythology into modern day. There, now you can burn me at the stake while Riordan throws D&D dice at me.

Okay, you let out a groan of frustration at about four minutes, and that's exactly how I felt. The first thing I said to my friend was, "Did Rick even read his own book when he wrote this script?" Also, what was with Annabeth, the daughter of the Goddess of *Wisdom* doing coming up with the plan to split up? And then having the nerve to tell Grover, when he asked why their memories weren't affected by the hotel, that it helps to have someone there to remind you. Like, jerk, you came up with the brilliant plan!

As for Rick's work, I'll be frank with you: I lost all hope on him after seeing that bit about "Roman Gods are just Greek Olympians' split personality". Anyone worth their salt knows that, despite the similarities and influence, Roman gods are different (and also very similar to the Etruscan one)
@SupremPyro

@@dariovirga7711 that might be true in our world. In the pjo universe? The Roman Gods are just Greek Olympians´ split personality. That is fiction you can take something from ur world and change it for your fictional world to fit in the verse.

@dariovirga7711 3 ай бұрын
@@SupremPyro I'd be fine with that if it weren't for the fact that Riordan also rides the "accurate research" bus, frequently making use of obscure myths and accurate references for his stories that would be completely useless if his work was set in an alternate reality where anything goes regardless of mythical accuracy (and I have nothing against this trope when it is done right, see Ryu Fujisaki's Hoshin Engi compared to the original text). I find distasteful his fall into the lazy "common knowledge" of Roman gods are Greek Gods with funnier names when at the same time he has Eģyptian and Norse Pantheon separated, despite the Greeks and Romans using the same logic towards them (the Greeks having the story that their gods escaped to Egypt to hide from Typhon, becoming tje local pantheon, while the Romans identified several Norse deities with their own, such as Wodan being Mercury).
@ianbrudnakvoss3126
@ianbrudnakvoss3126 3 ай бұрын
@@dariovirga7711 Am I wrong in thinking the Romans syncretized a lot more with the Greeks than the others? Didn't they adapt a lot of Greek myths into their own than Norse and Egyptian? Aren't a number of our sources for those myths Roman texts? Yeah they thought Odin was Mercury, but they didn't start treating Mercury as the head honcho because of it right? He also doesn't account for the Mycenaean gods at all which is almost the exact same situation, so you could justify it as they BECAME split personalities because so much was borrowed, since the in-universe logic is that if enough people believe in it, it becomes true. A good example of this would be Medusa, whose backstory became and still is the popular narrative and was thus used in the books, even though it's an Ovid fanfic and not the original Greek story. The difference here is that Medusa is just a monster and so, like the minor gods, probably isn't important enough to be split (within that world). I do still agree that he gives himself too much credit or, more accurately, his world-building is extremely shallow and he rarely justifies in a deeper way why something is different and leaves a lot of it up to the reader to interpret, which is lazy (but still better than giving bad lore like JKR)

You'd either be (1) confused why there's so much emphasis on a character you hardly met, or (2) you'd easily figure out he's the traitor, because why else would they try so hard to explain why this character you'd hardly met hates the gods so much.

Pumping the flower stuff into the air had so much potential. Like, Percy could’ve found an awesome water park and spent so long underwater the effects wore off and he has to navigate his drugged up friends out. There could’ve been a moment where he can leave without his friends and he doesn’t even consider it and goes back to help them.

I mean, yes, he is relatively calm in comparison to the other gods, but like that? In the books he had absolutely no reason to be this patient. At least to me the episode didn't really get the feeling that he was in charge of the plane of existence they are in. He seems just like a harmless guy who happens to be in the palace. Not even really in charge of that situation, he went from "I know exactly why you're here" to "...what?" in seconds, before Percy suddenly had that spontaneous revelation, who actually pulls the strings, and Hades coming up with a totally bonkers plan. Yes, he wants to sit out the crisis in the Underworld in the books as well, but that is after Kronos obviously becomes a threat, not just because a 12 year old boy makes wild accusations. Hades would never ever risk to take the master bolt and start another war with Zeus, just because of the suspicion that Kronos *could* be back.

@noahme4eva

OK, but how does the story about the scar help us understand why Luke is mad at the gods. If we set up that he had a conflict with Hermes, because of his mom earlier, he becomes more sympathetic. As opposed to how it is in the books, we don’t really learn why he turned against the gods until the final book chapters before Percy is supposed to kill him. So I find the changes necessary, because we need to understand why Luke is going to turn against the gods. Also, Luke is a foil to Percy Percy in his relationship with his mother, and father is complicated, but Luke is even more so and tragic and that’s why he’s the villain. Not knowing that again literal chapters before Percy and Annabella is supposed to kill him Mount Olympus to me is poor, writing, and pacing on Rick’s part. Five books in and we don’t know the villains motivation, true motivation until the final chapters. That’s the problem so I appreciate the show for changing things. Is the show perfect but who cares we got an adaptation that’s a reimagining of the story. Like if you want the original story, go read the books go read the graphic novel go watch the shitty movies. The patient is still out there. This isn’t the only way to experience these characters. Hell there’s probably fanfic that’s better than the books and this show go find it go enjoy that.

I was a huge fan of this show despite the problems, but this episode was the one that took me out of the magic. Like, I havent read the books in a while so I forgot a lot of elements so some changes i didn't notice at all as i just was remembering the basic structure and the core of it. But this episode ruined many core parts of the story. Even without reading the books in years, i still knew that the summer solstice change with the war was the dumbest thing and that having 4 pearls instead of 3 completely messes up the story and theme. Also, the subplot of Clarisse being the thief is meaningless and takes away from the important parts. Also, for the lotus casino, if they wanted to tie in Hermes being there, have them get lured in search of him there but they get trapped (something similar to how Grover got trapped) then have the reveal of time working differently there with how it was revealed in the books. If they wanted the reveal of it being pumped in the air, have it be like a humidifier system (Fits with the location). After Percy finds out about the person from decades ago, he notices all the lotus symbols and connects it to the oddysey, but say something about how he didnt eat anything with the lotus flower. He then investigates and notices the humidity (Water powers) and how the water from the humidifier is lotus flower water or something.

Then proceeds to dump exposition that Hermes, apparently, gave him off screen. Now the main character is getting info that we, the audience, are not privy to. That sets a bad standard. Also, the pacing of this show is so bad, that when they told us how much time had passed I wasn't sure why I should care. I have read the books, so I knew why it mattered, but the show just casualy dropped that more time had passed then they thought and all I could think was "and I should care why?" lol

Except when Rick first announced this show book accuracy was a main selling point. If he wanted this to be its own thing he should’ve just said that. Also a lot of these changes are significantly worse than the book it’s almost like the books were popular for a reason. The amount of tell don’t show in this series is infuriating to me. The amount of just killing tension before it even builds is just bad writing. Just because Rick is approving something doesn’t mean it was the right move he isn’t perfect and we should be able to question his decisions just like we do with his books.

@@loganjoh1 I don't think we can say the changes are worse until the entire series is over, mainly because we don't fully know we're things are going, but on the writing thing I can agree mostly, when a writer gets brought on to work on a show or movie this tends to happen sense in books you can direct a readers attention to something easier than in a visual medium which can lead to them writing stilted dialog in an attempt to add back in stuff that the author sees as important, obviously there are better ways to do that though.

I'm going to be honest (and people might hate me for this take): the Lotus Casino scene was done better in the movie. Of course, the mystery being ruined by Poseidon's telepathic message to Percy was bad, but the buildup and mystery not even existing in the first place is worse. They go in knowing it's dangerous and already on guard. In the movie they were eating the lotus cakes, which was a well thought out change from the book and made the scene more accurate to the original myth. The lotus infused air was also a change from the book... but it just wasn't good, unlike the change in the movie it was not an improvement and overall just unnecessary. The big loss here, the big thing I hoped the show would avoid losing, is the scene of Percy figuring out what's going on by himself. Instead, Hermes just tells Percy about the lotus essence, which is just as bad as the Poseidon telepathy when it comes to ruining the mystery/buildup. I also did not care for them missing the deadline and getting four pearls. This is a SIGNIFICANT plot change from the books, and I do not see ANY potential benefit coming from these changes. I hate to say it, but Rick approving these changes does not make them good. I'm aware that his influence on the show is most likely what's keeping the plot from straying too far off the path set by the books, but that doesn't mean the man never makes mistakes.

Rick and Disney changed the core part of a lot of things in the show. This does not get talked about nearly enough, but it was Rick who wanted to change Medusa's backstory from the book to the show. I am quoting Steinberg here: “Try to put yourself in his shoes: He wrote a book and then wrote so many more books and that universe exploded and he never got a second shot,” says Steinberg...He took some pleasure, I think, in being able to have another go and think about how he would write the story again if he had a do-over.” Rick also weighs in on this by saying: "As a 12-year-old boy in 2005, I don’t think he had the bandwidth for deconstructing the patriarchy. He was looking at it as, ‘This is a scary woman who’s trying to turn me into stone.' " So a lot of the changes were approved by Rick simply because he wanted to have another go at it for whatever reason. Sad to say but he is, at least in part, choosing to ignore accuracy for the sake of putting a spin on the mythology he used for his books. God knows what other changes were approved by him but man this is really sad.

I think most of the problems you talked about could just be boiled down to them not having enough time to really explore or show details. One of the people involved with the show came out and spoke about how next season they could work on including things they didn’t really have the time to include in the 1st one. TV used to be 24 eps and 20 min long runtime with the amount of episodes making up for short runtime, but with streaming it became 8 eps with 45-60 minute runtime with the length in episode time making up for the lack of episodes, but with this series it’s 8 eps with 30-40 (including credits) which just seems like Disney is just doing them a great disservice especially when you consider that Marvel Live action shows had like 40-60 minute runtimes, so Idk why Disney couldn’t do it for PJO. Showing instead of telling takes time, time they didn’t have. On the matter of this episode as much as I really don’t like admitting, someone mentioned that Rick must’ve hated the movie so bad that instead of realizing they may have did something’s right , and taking inspo from there, he just went in a completely different direction to avoid that, and I think they had a point.

Another issue I take with this show: it's not nearly as fun as the book. The show is trying so hard to make everything so serious, I mean when did we see any of the kids crack a smile? Most of the time they're all with perpetual frowns, mainly Annabeth. She was snarky, sure, but i don't recall her being so stoic. She was sassy and expressive. When I read the book it really felt like I was on an adventure with friends because it was witty and fun as well as being suspenceful. This show's atmosphere is trying way too hard to be 'deep and serious' which feels wrong to me. At least the Sea of Monsters got some lf the tone from the books right. Lastly, would it kill Disney to add a bit more vibrance to the shots? So much of it looks muddy and graying.

@@benjalucian1515 here's a passage from the book that shows the characters did, indeed, actually have fun: Grover was eating potato chips to his heart's content, while Annabeth cranked up the National Geographic Channel. "All those stations," I told her, "and you turn on National Geographic. Are you insane?" "It's interesting." "I feel good," Grover said. "I love this place." Without his even realizing it, the wings sprouted out of his shoes and lifted him a foot off the ground, then back down again. "So what now?" Annabeth asked. "Sleep?" Grover and I looked at each other and grinned. We both held up our green plastic LotusCash cards. "Play time," I said. I couldn't remember the last time I had so much fun. And then for another example that comes from the third book, do you remember when the whole group was making jokes about the Hoover Dam? I do, and it was funny.

Disney needs to explain how Percy Jackson, a show based on a 375 page kids book, with a 120 million dollar budget and around 5 hours of runtime roughly, is somehow a worse adaptation than LOTR rotk, the hunger games, Harry Potter, etc which each have lower budgets per movie with less than half the screen time on average, and have more complex and interesting source material.

I hate to say this but the movie did somewhat better than the show. I agree they shouldn’t have had Poseidon just tell Percy not to eat the lotus cake, but everything else was good, as much as I hated the movie. I would also like to note that Percy, Annabeth, and Grover going on a quest to Lotus Hotel and Casino just defies the entire point of the book. In many Greek myths such as the Odyssey and Jason and the Argonauts, the hero runs into one obstacle after another on their way to their overall goal.

Yes it is rushed due to the length of episodes and the short season, but while Percy and Annabeth do leave Grover behind the writers are giving him more such as him manipulating Ares using his emotional intelligence and giving a scene that shows the audience how much he wants to search for Pan, all of which add to his character that was more of a comic relief in the books.

The thing that broke me was when the Nereid gave Percy four pearls. Completely undermines the big decision Percy makes at the end, unless they randomly lose one of the pearls, in which case it was pointless anyway, and really counterproductive to end an episode with it. Slow burn is like 90% of good television. I don’t buy the excuse of “it’s just a tv show” to accept lazy and bad writing, because then we wouldn’t have GOOD tv. And Luke’s slow burn is vital to his character arc. You’re supposed to get those insights later when he’s bad to help humanize him and make his finale so much more impactful. I made a video comparing the three different versions of the Lotus Casino. I found that the film version is closer to the books in terms of its tone and vibe, compared to the show's adaptation. The show's version is weird because they removed the suspense element by not having the characters figure out what's going on in the casino. Instead they either get told what's on or they already know it through exposition. My one gripe with the show so far is how short the episodes are. It feels like the recent episodes could each have an extra 10 minutes to flesh out the pacing, instead of rushing through the content.

I don’t mind that Luke’s mom was brought up early in the series. I actually think it can work. My problem is that Annabeth shouldn’t be the one telling Percy, it should be Luke himself telling Percy. One problem I had even with the books was Percy and Luke’s friendship and wished that it could’ve been explored more in the show so the eventual reveal was more impactful. Hopefully the show isn’t another JK Rowling Fantastic Beasts situation. And yes the movie version of the casino was more fun.

I had a lot of problems at first, but after some rewatched I like it. The missing of the deadline isn’t gonna be that big a deal actually. My guess is the heroes are gonna be much tighter on the finish, stopping the war as it starts instead of before it does. My biggest hope for episode 7 is that hades has the Goldlike appearance of the books, and not just have him look like a human. If he turns into his human shape during the confrontation that’s fine, but I hope he at least starts out looking scary and huge
@spencerwillmoth5456
@spencerwillmoth5456 3 ай бұрын
That makes less sense, the deadline was one of the biggest shows that the gods didn't care about people that much, because we knew if this war happened it would be the end of humanity or close to it, and making us believe that if they didn't get the bolt back to Zeus on time the gods would just end humanity in their petty war, its a trope but it was used well in PJO

My son had been so excited for this episode (hasn't read the books yet) because the idea sounded fun and a bit more relatable to the modern world - so didn't rely on me explaining who each mythological person was :) He just said 'meh' at the end'; it was weird, Lin Manuel wasn't used right (he can be so funny but was just sad here), pacing went out of the window again!! and no one had any time to work anything out for themselves. Plus Grover and Annabeth came off as just not acting well, weirdly feeling out of place and the story had no sense of urgency - we have been here too long 'oh well, we will carry on hi ho hi ho'. He has been enjoying the rest of the series and I think this was the first time where he was underwhelmed by what they have put out and not fussed about episode 7 coming out.

I think the change for the Lotus Hotel is good. The Lotuseater were quite famous in the myths and I would imagine that Chiron would teach/warn the people at Camp about the still existing dangers, especially if it is a known location. I'm a bit sad that we didn't get Percy figuring it out himself and kind of wish they would have a small scene where he discovers that they are pumping the Lotus into the air, instead of just telling us. Also... I mean let's be real having three kids walk into a random Casino and then are being drugged, would set the tone a bit... differently. So them going there to ask for help is something I like. And while it pains me to say it, it's probably better that Annabeth, Percy and Grover don't have access to a creditcard with _unlimited money!_ (please imagine the Emperors voice saying this). Though I still wish they would have given Lin Manuel the role of Apollo... just imagine him having to perform annoying rhymes that let you question if he really is the god of music. It would have been fun, since we know he should be able to perform since it's Lin Manuel, as well as Apollo... Overall so far I enjoyed all Episodes. They are different from the books, but what's the point of an adaptation if it's supposed to be a perfect copy of the book? Changes must be made, when the medium changes and I think we still have enough of the characters shining through while also having a new take on the story.
