Just found out there’s an end credit scene. I personally found it very unfitting considering how much they changed Gabe’s character. Dude was just a loser. He didn’t deserve to die in this version. It’s pretty messed up when you think about it.

It definitely isn't as warranted as the movie or book versions, makes you wonder why they watered his character down for this.

It sounds like they changed the circumstances of Gabe turning to stone because of the changes to his character. And I understand why they changed his character, they didn’t want to bring up trauma in people who have been abused, so they cut it down a lot. And they changed it to Gabe simply finding the head instead of Sally or Percy deliberately showing it to him. Did he deserve to die? Hell no. I realized that from the first episode. But I also think some fans would be upset if it wasn’t included.

Sally and Gabe’s dynamic just felt... off. I don’t think they felt comfortable tackling such a heavy topic as abuse and pulled their punches. As a result, even if he was a jerk, Gabe felt more pathetic than dangerous. Definitely another case where the movie was more accurate than the books.

@@jetthayward4810They actually put out an announcement saying that they toned him down because they thought he might trigger people in a visual medium. Id argue that a certain level of triggering is kinda necessary in order to do the book justice and make Gabe’s death meaningful though. (Plus it has the same flaw as the movie where now whoever finds his body is gonna die too💀)

I am glad they changed the manner of death. He wasn't sentenced to death. He wasn't murdered. His downfall was his own selfish and self entititled actions. It was addressed to Percy. Percy would have known what it was and exercised care. Had he not opened someone else's mail he would have been fine. So I'm okay with his death. I definitely prefer it to Sally being a murderer. She stood up for herself and kicked him out. This consequence is all on him.

Lance Reddick's appearance as Zeus in "The Prophecy Comes True" is his final television appearance due to Lance Reddick's death. Lance died only about four to six weeks after shooting the episode.[1] According to Dan Schotz, while preparing for his role as Zeus, Lance "just kept saying, "This book, it's Shakespearean!" He kept using the word "Shakespearean," and feeling that pressure of, "I'm in this high-end play - I need to deliver gravitas." He put a lot of pressure on himself even in the short time we had with him. He understood what he was a part of, and the importance of it. It says everything about him as an actor. He just brought it."[1] Jon Steinberg stated that "we wanted Zeus to be someone who needs to be constantly convincing himself that everything is fine and under control. That felt like it came with a little bit of theater, a little bit of projection of his own authority, but also a sense of real presence. When you take all of those ideas and start looking for a person who embodies them, they just start to look like Lance. He is so - was so regal, and able to convey so many different things at the same time. To stand on stage and do a very theatrical monologue, but feel so grounded. The population of actors who can do those things, and then also just be the sweetest person and great with the kids he's acting with - heartbreaking is the right word. It was a perfect fit in a very hard-to-fit role, and he went way too soon."[1]

@@maciedixon3983 "I just truly don’t care about this like some people do." Okay... Good for you, I guess... To me and almost everyone else it's like Rick and the writers of the TV series just didn't want to have *any* type of intrigue or mystery or suspense in the TV adaptation... The main trio just solve everything before it happens... In bouts of concentrated, tone-deaf impulsivity, season one of the TV series actually has the gall to have the main characters just constantly exposition dump all the info of what they're about to face before they do it... "Don't let the viewer figure things out, please...! Just tell them early on and right away and have the characters go, "Anyways..." or "Alright..."" It constantly blew my mind whenever season one of the TV series had the fortitude of a trouble-seeking 12-year-old who is simply incapable of not spoiling the plot for others... No sense of discovery, no tense moment, no danger whatsoever, and no moments where we, the viewers, get lost in this world because we already know *immediately* everything about who and what everything does in this universe... Season one of the TV series just completely skipped over the characters learning experiences throughout the story... The main trio pretty much knew how to just walk into a place and *immediately* know how to defeat a monster and their weaknesses like the Lotus Eaters and Procrustes... I watched Dominic Noble's Lost in Adaptation review of episode six of the TV series and I remember him making the analogy of, "This series is genuinely starting to feel like the second playthrough of an RPG where you know all the twists in advance and make very different decisions just to see what will happen," and if that isn't the perfect analogy of how the encounters with monsters played out in season one, then I don't know what is... The struggles and being able to put myself in the main trio's shoes were pretty much none existent in season one... As someone who enjoys "a coming of age hero's journey" story like this I didn't have the feeling of the main trio trying to get better at things and the sense of discovering things and letting us get lost in the world. Season one *completely* missed out on the feeling of this newbie that's just starting out in this fantasy world when I came to Percy's characterization and arc.

I agree with most of your grievances with this show, but I still enjoy it. I’ve also been keeping on top of news as far as a season 2 goes, and while nothing’s been greenlit, it sounds like the writers are trying to pace the season and expand on the characters better. Especially Grover, since he really needs it. Edit: also, I watched the episode with my family, and when Percy got to the throne room, the first thing out of my sister’s mouth was “where’s the fishing chair?” I agreed with her. Because I liked how each throne represented the gods’ different tastes and spheres of influence. Also, it was Apollo’s throne that’s gold. But that’s not shown until Titan’s Curse. Edit 2: Backbiter could open portals to other places in the books, but Luke uses it literally once only, at the end of The Lightning Thief. Edit 3: Kronos never wanted Percy for his host body. He wanted Percy on his side because of the Great Prophecy, and like everybody else assumed the half-blood who made the choice would also be the one who reached 16. This is the bit you’re thinking of when you think Kronos wanted Percy as his host body. It’s in The Last Olympian, Percy’s in his first fight with Kronos since he bathed in the River Styx: Kronos: “So…” He studied me, looking mildly annoyed. “You had the courage to visit the Styx. I had to pressure Luke in many ways to convince him. If only you had supplied my host body instead… But no matter. I am still more powerful. I am a TITAN.” -The Last Olympian, page 191.

If they wanted to change Sally, I kind of wish they just adjusted her so instead of changing her dynamic with Gabe, they just shed a different light on it. Maybe talk more about how staying in an abusive, toxic relationship “for the kids” is not good or worth it. Maybe we see Sally justifying it to herself and Percy or maybe we see Sally notice the effects it’s having on Percy when she’s not around. For example, maybe one day a teacher at Percy’s school mentions to her how Percy after Sunday nights, (or whenever Gabe‘s poker nights are) Percy seems very angry, sad and aggressive at school, and we see that realization sadly that even though staying with Gabe is for Percy’s protection it is also hurting him very much so much. Seeing his mom work like a servant for someone that’s hurt her and the fact that he can’t do anything about it eats him up inside. This could build more to her kicking Gabe out or killing him depending on how they want to do it.

I feel like honest critique is important especially because the books meant so much to you. The books came out when I was a teen and I felt like a snob (I was obsessed with Greek mythology as a child) not reading them at the time because I thought the real myths would not have been represented well there. As an adult now I’ve come to understand that it was a way to introduce a generation to Greek mythology and I’m currently reading the books. If anything the series made me pick up the actual novels.

A bit disappointed we didn’t get the scorpion scene at the end. It was a lot more subtle as opposed to a sword fight and we still could’ve gotten the Annabeth reaction to Luke and make her the one to bring Percy back to camp to save him. The book ending set Luke up as a more intelligent and conniving villain, I don’t feel we got that as much in the show.

The scorpion scene wouldn't make sense. Kronos needs Percy alive for the prophecy, Luke trying to kill him with it would go directly against his master's wishes. Wanting to recruit Percy but letting his anger get the better of him and attacking Percy with his sword is much more fitting

1:04 I actually got sent your videos by my brother after we had a couple messages back and fourth sharing our thoughts on the show. I honestly very much am on the side of not liking it, despite the fact that I love Percy Jackson deeply. I even named my dog Perseus, with Percy being what we always called him. And I have tried with all my might each episode to like the show but it's been really hard. I've even been trying to watch and read other positive opinions in preparation for watching the series again to see if I can see it differently and at least have a good deal of appreciation for it, but honestly all I feel like doing is going back to read the books again lol You're definitely not alone in your distaste for the series, I was really hoping for a lot more. I'm starting to hold out hope that it'll be an awkward and lukewarm response to just the first season, and the following seasons will start to really do the shows potential justice. I'm gonna start looking at it as a "faithful reimagining" of sorts, and try to stay positive that way. Very happy to have found your channel through these reviews though btw, love it!

Beyond the cast, Riordan also touched on how features films may not have been the best medium to adapt Percy Jackson to begin with. Once boarding the new adaptation as an executive producer, Riordan fought to make the adaptation a small-screen series rather than another attempt at a film franchise. He noted, "My feeling was always that television was the better format for Percy, because it allows us a larger canvas to tell more of the story. And to be more faithful to the source material, which is what the fans of the books really would love to see.” With the new cast, Riordan feels that everyone involved is "perfect," even if they don't look exactly like how they might have been written in the original books. With Scobell, Riordan noted, "Did I care that his hair is a different color than what is described in the book? Not at all. He just felt like Percy.” With Simhadri's Grover, Riordan similarly added, "Does he look exactly like I describe him in the book? No. That doesn’t matter." "Leah impressed me from the moment I met her. She has that sort of steel that makes her a leader, but there’s a bit of vulnerability to her," the author went on to say about Jeffries. “Now, again, does she look like Annabeth looks in the books? No. Was that important to me? No. If anything, it was a massive benefit to broaden the cast in terms of representation.”

I get some of the changes and are interested in them. But a lot take away from the small moments that we enjoyed. Also, only 8 episodes?? This really should have been 12 I think. The reason you do shows is so you have more time to work with. I agree with what you said about Grover in show. He did not do much but I can argue that in first book Grover did not do much in book. Like if you honestly think about it the only thing he does to help in book is talk to animals. In book Percy and Annabeth kind of did all the hard stuff and that is fine since Percy is our main character we need him to do all hard stuff. I will give Grover credit in book that he distracted Medusa for a while until Percy took over. That was like the one badass thing he did in first book. I may be wrong so anyone can correct me

tbh I started watching your reviews of this show cuz I really value your input when it comes to pjo universe as a whole but I was even more pleased to hear you were as confused as I was with the direction the show was taking in the first few episodes. but as it turns out you actually enjoyed it way more than I did overall and I'm glad that you found so many redeeming qualities about the show in the end! and I'm just sad I couldn't like it more. it's clear that everyone involved tried their best with production but it just doesn't sit right with me at all. which makes me very sad but oh well. cool to see some people enjoyed it. gonna go bury myself in the original 5 books cuz at this point it's the only content from Riordan that I still think fondly of

Look, I have friends who liked the show, and I’m glad they did, but as a long time fan of the books, I… did not. In fact, I hated it. I could write a whole essay on why, but yeah. I probably hated it even more than you lmao. I don’t get why not liking it is suddenly some sort of cardinal sin. It just depends on what you want out of an adaptation 🤷‍♀️

Because of the manner of Gabe's death and Sally thus not saving herself, the line of the prophecy about Percy failing to save what matters most in the end is left unresolved. Wait why Gabe would matter to Percy most ? I thought it was Luke 's friendship According to Jon Steinberg, the prophecy was deliberately left unresolved in regards to the line that Percy will fail to save what matters most to him, meaning that it may still come true in the future.[2] On the decision to send Percy to Olympus past his deadline, Steinberg said "I thought there was something interesting about removing all of Percy's obligation to do the right thing and seeing him confront that. Even absent this sacred responsibility to move forward, there's a different kind of responsibility."[2]

I mean I always interpreted the "Fail to save what matters most" line to mean failing to save his mom from the underworld.

20:29 maybe they are hinting on the prophecy. Remember that at this point Percy is the only known living forbidden child (keyword known because Nico and his sister are being hidden on the lotus casino), so Kronos has plans for Percy to make the bad decision and bring doom to the Gods.

I loved these books as a kid too and am so relieved I’m not the only one that is not loving this TV adaptation so far. Tried to stick through it hoping it would get better. I want to like it, but it’s just been disappointing, which is a bummer because I was so looking forward to this new adaptation. Thank you for your videos! Always insightful and entertaining :)
