Another good tip with Frog Tape is once you've applied it, take a damp towel and go over the edge of it. The water activates the sealant in the tape and once that's dried for a few minutes, you should get no paint bleeding under. Cabinet looks great by the way!

Yep, I think that’s the key, damp rag over the edge. Yellow frog tape is the best!

Sharp looking wood choice. The Waterlox was a good choice too. It’s amazing how that final whisper thin coat of Waterlox brings the finish to perfection and it’s so easy to apply. I used their Universal Tung Oil Sealer and Original Satin for my cherry kitchen cabinets. The sealer has a nice ambering effect on the cherry. Enjoyed the video. Thanks for everything.

Just did this project a few months ago (small two-shelf bookcase). Harder than it looks but love Waterlox and those screw+ply support thingies. Jon, a suggestion: Waterlox now has a variety of different finishing products and I was confused over the best choice. You might consider reintroducing Waterlox to newer fans and suggest the best product choices.

Thanks Jack! I always use the original… sometimes these companies make things too confusing by offering too many options. Water lox is definitely one of my go to for oil base finishes.

Absolutely gorgeous cabinet Jon!!! I think I would paint inside the box before applying the solid wood edge banding and even the veneer for that matter. I'd just be careful not to get paint anywhere there is going to be glue for the edge banding. Perhaps there's a reason you prefer to paint it afterward though. Regardless, it turned out beautiful as do all your projects!

Thanks! That could work, but I wanted to paint to come to the edge of the cabinet

I built some "nailers" months ago using concrete nails I found in my shop. They left no marks when applying Waterlocks over stain, of course on the backside of a table top.

When can you simply clear-coat/seal the whole thing with paint and stain? Anything but latex paint? Do most clear sealers work on any and everything? I have stuck to simple finishes. Milk paint with boiled linseed oil on top. Shellac of on bare wood. Want to get spray lacquer. Love how lacquer keeps drawers and cabinets easy to clean.

A couple of items. First, did you use the Water lox sealer/finish for all coats, or use that first, then finish with the satin? Secondly, I know I told you this before, but it was a long time ago. Whenever applying masking, even Frog tape, using a flexible, clean putty knife with a slightly sharpened edge, etc, and while pulling the knife across the tape, press down. You will add more pressure than your fingers, and the tape will lay flatter. This should eliminate at least most if not all bleed. It’s especially useful if you’re taping into corners. The knife is also great for cutting the tape square. I typically use a two inch knife. The cabinet looks great, too.

There’s definitely pluses and minuses to brushing … one of the things I like is easy cleanup and no overspray. I’m having good results with this Benjamin Moore command.
