This is how my Grandmother always made hers, she never bought real butter only Oleo, (margarine). But always used Crisco Shortening for her pie dough and frying her Chicken. My Grandmother was a young wife during the depression so she did things the old way which I admired, she ALWAYS used canned milk in her coffee too. She bought milk in cartons, but never broke the habit of canned milk use. Oh how I loved her. She was an angel on earth all her life. Her name was Irene. 🙏💓💓💓💓

My grandmother’s recipe was nearly identical to this one. She put her shortening, usually lard, in one tablespoon at a time then used the pastry cutter. When it was time for the ice water, she also did that a tablespoon at a time and continued to use the cutter until all the water was in then switched to a fork. For the holidays, I may need 15 or so crusts. Around the beginning of November, I measure out all the ingredients and put flour, salt, and shortening in a small Zip-lock bag, one bag for each crust. It then goes into the freezer. When it’s time to make pies, I remove the crusts and finish them in the food processor adding the ice water through the chute. Back into the bag and the fridge until I’m ready to roll it out. My grandmother believed the less your warm hands cam in contact with the crust, the flakier and more tender it would be. What would we have done without our grandmothers?

I 'm going to make your pie crusts.I see what I did wrong. That trick with the measuring cup for the Crisco, I have always done that with honey but never Crisco. Thank you for the wonderful tips. When I watch you, you take me back to being with my Grandmother who taught me the love of baking, canning. She died when I was 10, but she gave me so many of her basic ways of cooking. Thank you for everything.

My mother never wanted to really share her recipe for her pie crusts. And I must admit she made outstanding pie crusts. My daughter makes her pie crusts from the recipe on the label of the Crisco can. I’ve been known to use the recipe on the Crisco can also. But I’ve also been known to buy already made pie crusts. Tomorrow I’m going to make your recipe for pie crusts. I want to be known for my outstanding pie crusts. I’ll edit this comment after I make my pie crusts in the morning.

Good video I made chicken pot pie yesterday and my pie crust was a little thick plus the filling was also on the dry side bummers I think had I made the crust a little thinner it would not of suck up my combo cream of chicken soup + 1 can of chicken stock. . I will try again but here is a the total recipe for mock Marie Calendar pot pie 2 pie crusts. 1 can cream of chicken soup. + 1 can of of chicken stock 1 package of Mix veggie + 1/2 cup of pearl onions or 1/2 cup of grilled onions. 1to 2 cups of cubed cooked chicken breasts. 1 9in glass pie pan. add seasonings to taste black pepper, Salt? or use NO-Salt , Bake at 350 for 25 to 30 min or until top crust is light golden brown. Once again me thinks a thinner crust would of made for a better pie :)

Hi Rachel, I love your channel. I'm a Chef and I still learn many things from your videos. I just wanted to share with you a tip I saw on another channel, when making 2 pie crusts divide them into 2/3 and 1/3 that way you have a bigger piece for the bottom and smaller for the top because you need a bigger piece for the bottom because the sides angle out. Keep up the good work.

I call my kitchen my test kitchen and I’m trying all manner of recipes. Lately I’ve been adding an egg to my ice water. It makes a very flaky crust. But I don’t want to vary too much from my original recipe. I’ve also added a tsp. of baking powder to my flour. As I said, this is my test kitchen. My son went to a 4th of July BBQ at the beach last weekend and he took one of my blueberry pies. The women were asking him if I made my own crusts from scratch and how I made them so flaky. He said all he knew was everything had to be icy cold. I even kept my flour in the fridge until I was ready to mix it all up. Several of them asked for my recipe, but honestly I don’t have a recipe. I do use the crisco sticks and they’re so easy to measure. I haven’t used the canned crisco since the sticks came out. I love working the dough with my hands. My mother kept her crust recipe to herself, so I’ve had to improvise over the years. My cousin asked me for my recipe since her mother, my mother’s sister, didn’t share her crust recipe either. What’s wrong with the mothers who didn’t share their recipes?
