Hi Matt! I’ve lately been watching your videos on squatting. Originally, I was a bit unsure about things you bring up about squat technique such as flat soles, near vertical shins, etc. I gave it a few weeks of practice. It was a huge grind to squat 405 but with consistent practice, it’s getting smoother. Thank you so much for your content! It has helped me a lot with the squat and I can’t wait to get even stronger!

You’re the master, but I would add squeezing and depressing the scaps while flexing the lats. Helps me keep the sternum high. Just tightening the upper back added about 20 pounds to my squat in one session.

At least Ray Williams, Jesus Olivares, John Haack, Russel Orhii squat with knee traveling forward and they seem to use their full body to squat and seems to work for them pretty good. Its typical for "westside barbell" fanatics to try squueze every bodytype in to same squatform. Just because it worked for Wenning(?) in raw squat does not mean it works for everyone.

Is this a powerlifter type of squat? Because I've always been taught the bar should be placed higher and allow the knees to travel over the toes. Thanks
@powskier Жыл бұрын
Suppose if my limiting factor ain't my legs, hips, or lower back at all, but instead it's dealing with the pain/getting used to having the bar across my back? I'm not that skinny either at 210 and 6'2". I don't want a bar pad either as those things seem dangerous, So, what exercises can I do build up the very upper back where the bar sits in the low bar squat? Or do you just tough out and squats will make the upper back grow?

Minor question, but his wrists are cooked back. Have seen other power lifters saying the wrists should be inline as similar to a bench press to help keep everything tight as well as the bar. Is that not a big concern in your opinion?

Point your toes outward, 45 degree angle instead of parallel. Make sure you're pushing your ass out and keep your knees level with your heels.

True squats are high bar. A proper high bar squat to depth has much more benefits than a powerlifting squat with heavier weights.

Are you implying that raw lifters should squat vertical shins?
@ck-rd2ce4 жыл бұрын
@@JesseBurnette2D assuming he advises vertical shins for raw lifter, the issue is this negates quad contribution. Also saying that knees shouldn't go over toes does not take individual anthropometry into account. Raw low bar squats will put most people's knees about an inch over their toes, give or take..
@ck-rd2ce4 жыл бұрын
@@JesseBurnette2D The version Matt advocates is very easy on the knees, since the moment force is directed onto the hips. Raw is going to have your knees go forward/out while sitting back. Both versions will have the bar over mid foot. Difference will be torso lean and resulting hip/knee angles. Not sure why Matt says "notice how vertical his spine stays" because he's actually very leaned over.... which is necessary to keep the bar over mid-foot if you're going to squat with vertical shins and a greater sit back
