The GetReal was soooo Real today. My dad died out of the blue when I was 21, and that feeling of “when is the other shoe gonna drop” is so real. When he was alive though he would always say “far worse things have been known to happen.” And I try and take that with me to remember not to sweat the small stuff, because in the end, that doesn’t matter.

This show often gives advice on easing awkward social dynamics and it's worthwhile to consider that neurodivergent people often have different communication styles that can sometimes come off as awkward or cold or shy etc. but could always just be that 'tis rizz if u know what i mean. One thing autistic people are familiar with is a concept called the 'double empathy gap' where autistic people carry the blame for communication breakdowns if and when they're not meeting neurotypical expectations whereas there might just be some mutual cross neurotype friction between communication/expectations!

The Get Real is SO real today. My sister unexpectedly died a couple years ago, and I do feel the “when is the other shoe gonna drop” feeling when I’m happy. As someone who has been “that roommate”, I would like to add some perspective: They might be going through some tough shit and are currently viewing their life as just “getting through it” until they can get to the next juncture in their life. I might be projecting a bit, but I related a lot to being the roommate and just needing my space when I had roommates that I’m sure made them feel uncomfortable
@Roneish19964 ай бұрын
I keep struggling with the writing a short comment about the last call, so basically I will try again. It’s possible that the housemate is autistic like myself and has a lot of social anxiety, sensory sensitivities and finds a lot of social interactions overwhelming. I don’t think trying to force a conversation is going to help and could trigger demand avoidance issues meaning that the relationship gets worse. What I would suggest is letting her know you want to talk whenever she is comfortable to do so (also when you are comfortable as well but if I am right too much pressure feels very demanding so you’ll need to give a far bit of leeway) you could even tell her some of what the talk would be about so she has time to process and think about it that could make things easier. I also feel like the idea about leaving the house at the same time is really bad because it feels like forcing an interaction and possibly shaming someone about headphones that are possibly related to sensory regulation. Also no ill will to Sarah and Miles btw just wanted to give a random very specific autistic person’s perspective.

Maybe for the person with the desk, is it possible to move the position of your desk to face more towards the door so you don't turn around to look at the door, you just look up? Or to move it a bit away from the door or the middle of the common area? (Also, it's okay, don't feel awkward, it's normal to look towards something when you see movement. It was Genentech that, many years ago, came up with a medication for it called NPlate. (It was marketed to cancer patients who needed to bump platelet counts after chemo treatments since the market for a rare disease is low I guess.) I was in the second round of clinical trials. It bumped me into remission. It has been over 22 years now! I do not love big pharma, but I am so grateful for this! I, also, did not have to pay for it since it was a clinical trial. Everybody else who got the drug and not the placebo also went into remission. (Yes, we all chatted in the waiting room.)
