This to me is my favourite periphery album. I think they’ve improved but the originality and brilliance of this album is too good. It’s very raw but so innovative and has some of my favourite kind of contrasts between Spencer’s kind of original vocals and misha and jakes growly riffs. Plus racecar is a masterpiece

Same dude I think their compositions have improved but they haven't made a better album yet. Also their style of heavy music on p1 and p2 js just far better than everything after clear. Tracks like Everything is fine are just too try hard IMO and not fun anymore. Zyglrox is pure fun, really everything on this album is pure fun and the craziest drumming I've heard on an album too Matt really tore up that roland kit

@@jimmymckie2272and it's funny because this album has the least genre variety, but the songs manage to be the most distinct to eachother as well. Idk how Misha managed that (he wrote the whole thing, and Jake helped with Racecar) but hes truly a prolific song writer I'm just wondering when he becomes a game composer because he has the chops to do it 1000%

This was the album that opened me to the true heavy prog/djent metal that we see now. I had never heard anything like it. I played this into the absolute ground. I agree the album becomes “bloated” by the end. My personal opinion is Racecar is my favorite and most played off the album. But definitely go back and listen to it on its own. But I honestly don’t go back to P1. I got back to P2 and Alpha/Omega waaay more.

P1 made me realize the prog/djent scene had something promising for the next few years and boy was I right. 12 years later the genre and the band are stronger than ever. As much as I can agree with your thoughts on the record being too long You have to remember that when Periphery put this record out, they had to consolidate all the material they had down to this debut full length. Not only that, it was a Single album deal at that time. How this record performed for them would determine what they could ask for next time around. It was a win win for fans and the band alike. Full versions of some songs that were only online as ideas and demos, and an action packed record to tease a label with. "See!!!! We're the gooderest!"

I really think some p1 is one of those albums you have to just slowly let grow on you over time. Listening to it all the way is something I have done before, but in the background of other activities. I can only imagine how tired Drew's brain was after an entire album and THEN listening to racecar. The last song is my favorite off the album, but that's because I went back and listened to it on repeat a couple of times months after discovering the album. You have to let the album simmer on you for a while because it's SO jam packed with djent that you almost have to let your brain have gaps between to fully ingest every single little key piece of the album Periphery was trying to put on their record. If you don't care about that then just spin the fuck out of it! One of their best by far

Easily. I just got to know Periphery roughly 1 year ago. It took several week to listen through the P5 album, I had never dived into prog metal deeper than Mastodon, and a bit of Tool. For example the Wildfire chorus "heartbeat haunts me" made me crazy, that skipped beats, and so one, there are so many details which were (and still are) mind-blowing for me. Then I said, wow, it makes sense, the most entertaining, versatile music, from pop through jazz to metal. Then I started to go backwards, and Blood Eagle was like, ah, it is really too aggressive, skip it.... then I just familiarized with that, too. Juggernaut was an instant like. P2 was, ah, too raw. P1, forget about it, way too much for me... And now, P1 is the top - with the others, and P3 is the second place. :-D When I listen to The Walk (like 4 times a week) I always play the opening sections 3 times. Well, I am heavily addicted 🙂 I had to confess these ow my feelings. Sorry!

Misha had tons of demos before the first records that had been making the rounds on forums. I had many of the songs as instrumentals before this record came out. What I'm saying is that they had a backlog before this record and people were expecting the hits to be on there. In my opinion though the record isn't too long, you're just impatient.

It really depends on individual preference/taste. Some people love the longer more progressive songs more than the shorter ones. However I do believe Periphery create their albums to be listened through the whole way in order. Musical progressive experiences, whilst still being able to like certain songs individually. It gives a bit of everything for many different people/preferences.

I think how you feel about this album really says a lot about your tastes, if you like this one you prefer a heavier, more technical style. This album to me is so chaotic and Spencer's vocals are clearly not as strong as the rest of their discography. I can't really listen to it regularly. Later Periphery stuff still has plenty of complex riffs and rhythms, but the melodic aspects are so much stronger and Spencer's influence gave them a lot more variety. All that said, Jetpacks Was Yes, All New Materials, Icarus Lives, and Racecar are fantastic songs.

It's got a ton of good stuff, but they did get more mature and more sophisticated with regards to writing, arrangements and production. My list would be: 1. P5 - P4 (I think they're equal to each other) 2. Juggernaut 3. P2 - P1 (... but if I'm being honest, the writing of P2 is a bit better... plus it's got Nolly and Mark) 4. I dont care what anyone says, this is their best album. The difference for me is when they go heavy on p1 or p2 for that matter, it's still so much FUN and always technical. Since juggernaut, sometimes they go heavy and I just don't dig it. Hell below, church burner, and everything is fine are perfect examples. It's like they're trying too hard and not having fun anymore on those songs The first time I heard this album I did think it was long. Now I wish it was longer because it's their best Era IMO That's why I was so psyched when I found the icarus album which is basically p1.5. I listened to Frak the gods and captain on 20 times more than wildfire or Zagreus. I was way more excited to hear those songs than anything off pV until I heard Dracul Gras and Thanks Nobuo

I think everything before p5 is their best album. Don't see myself listening to p5 at all really, didnt like it.
