Love your stuff Josh!! I think it's worth mentioning that this song is in 4/4 the entire way actually. They make great uses of 16th note rests to make things feel off-kilter, but if you follow the cymbals you can hear the quarter notes and it fits if you count to 4. As for the writing process, it's basically their 3 guitarists sitting in a room and writing riffs/chord progressions and then they actually write the bass parts in the session and then send everything off to their bass player (bald man) who mixes and masters everything (including the drums, where he engineers and sits in on sessions). So basically the 3 guitarists write alongside their vocalist who tells them that they need choruses and whatnot and he's the one who usually tells them to simplify so he has something melodic to sing over then they send it all to bald man to do the bass and drums and then they've got masters.

Oh that bald man is crucial to this enterprise isn’t he…all over the bloody place that one… 😂😂

Yes. 3 guitarists. They make great use of them. No flaws in their use of guitars. Also, this song is from a double album concept album, which to this day I still find new things from it. Definitely an epic journey that you should take. Maybe a full (double) album reaction? Thanks for doing Periphery. More people need to get into them.

All three guitarists play lead too, which is cool. After years of listening to them, you can start to distinguish between their individual styles.

There are wild screams and growls in lots of Periphery songs but I love Spencer's tone on some of the screams in this song, sounds truly dark

Subscribing due to you falling down the Periphery rabbit hole! :)

Not sure but I didn't see the answer in the comments concerning the time signature especially for the syncopated part you asked for 😉. Quite surprisingly, it's 4 bars of 4/4! The trick here is not to loop where we'd been expecting it and the snare for example is not falling on the classic 2nd/4th beat etc. (I think I saw Misha or Nolly explain this on one of the videos).

Since you're on the Periphery train, you should 100% check out the bass playthrough of Prayer Position for two reasons - 1) It's absolutely fucking filthy and you'll never hear a throatier/beefier bass tone in your life and 2) It's also the highest view count bass playthrough on youtube (if that tells you what people think of it).

A new Periphery reaction from you will ALWAYS be the first video I watch when I open up KZbin. I feel this song is the quintessential "how would you describe Periphery" song. It has a little bit of everything that they do, and they do it so well. Question: I know you have to work these Twitch streams into your schedule that is probably already full, but is there any way you can do one during a time that can get us Americans involved? I want to catch the streams live so bad but they are always on super early here.

I agree but Ive heard more jinjer to this point as I’m only just getting into periphery so to me it’s jinjer-esque

4:19 nice job! Never judge the book by the cover. Never throw a man in one of them bags before you get to know something about him. The fact that effin Nolly as the bass player in Periphery was probably the best guitar player in their group atm. Also, just google him, he's a pro-audio veteran and left a band - the one which he help create from ground up and was a part of it from the beginning - for touring just cause huge-band touring style wasn't his thing + it interfered with his another income stream as a music songwriter/producer/mixer. He has his signature in Dingwall and was a major player to help Dingwall get hyped all around, just because of the sonic things he was creating. Mockin' him like that lolz

I had no idea what you were talking about so went back and listened, dude I am joking around, I’m a bass player and I love bass, I’m shocked that anyone took any of that negatively
