If I were to have another house built, I would definitely have the Perkins Builder Brothers construct a new home. First of all, they study the blueprints and ensure the construction accurately follows the plans. They make prudent decisions to ensure the structural integrity of the building. Additionally they set high standards for themselves and the talented crew. These guys have a great rapport. In my humble opinion these guys are the model for construction companies.

Architects and Engineers are consistently getting more lazy. Stinks when the Structural Engineer ships calculations overseas to cut corners and then everything has to be 'Worked' out in the field. Good on you to test the dimensions before you start cutting.

this house is from a house plan mill, not an architect. so many issues here that drive me nuts.. bedroom doors that overlap exterior windows (or other doors) when open, window heads that don't align. not to mention missing dimensions, missing window head heights, bad closet placement, etc.... you would think that on such a sizable, "custom" house, the owner would have hired an architect

@@JsjsjjssjsThats how its done here. A new guy is not expected to have everything, and large equipment/ super specialized or expensive tools are normally provided by the contractor that employs the workers. But a journey level trades person is viewed as someone that can independently take on work, fit into any crew on any job, pick up and move to a different site or company independent of being strictly an employee of someone. Of course different companies do it different ways, and many guys stick with one company for most of their work. But in general once you hit a certain skill level you should have at least a basic suite of tools for your trade. A carpenter should have hand tools, a set of bags, and at least a cordless drill and circ saw, maybe a nail gun. Most have more, and many guys end up with some specialized tools for specializing in trim or cabinets or some other niche. Things like ladders, scaffolding, or a forklift would be provided by whoever is signing your checks unless it is your job and you are dealing with an owner or gc.

Hey guys, when I was building, (71 now), we built tons of sloped walls. We would determine how many studs we needed, put then tight to each other, mark both end studs to correct height, snap a line, then cut them while setting tight to each other. Believe it or not they always came out the right height. Just try it by marking them and see if the lengths come out correctly, did for us.
@KingofFools
@KingofFools 2 ай бұрын
The right height, sure. But the angle of the bevel would be wrong.
@Natedoc808

I still haven't heard about those H-beams you installed in their beam pockets. If they're sitting on a steel plate, fine. But if the plates are supported solely by 2 adjustment nuts underneath, on 2 one inch threaded rods, then the entire point load is supported by the rod threads, not the entire reinforced vertical support.

$2,500 is definitely cheaper than what you would pay an architect for a building of this scale, though it would be interesting to quantify Jamie’s time in sketchup and the crew’s time fixing things caused by incorrect/incomplete plans.

As an appliance installer, I used to tell builders to make opening for dishwasher 24-1/8 due to slight variations in dishwasher types as not all are standard. Some have thick rubber gaskets around them that will bind into the door and eventually cause them to leak. Also, always have an outlet under sink to plug it into. Customer can always unplug in case of issue. We would split the receptacle so other was on switch for disposal. Small things that help down the road for future maintenance.

Dishwashers should be hardwired to a separate circuit.
@reelmatthewswinslow
@reelmatthewswinslow 2 ай бұрын
@@robertbeirne9813at least two brands, one being Bosch come with plugs, or purchase optional junction box. Junction boxes should always be accessible, not hidden in a cavity. I've seen too many problems out of hundreds of installs of previous installations done wrong. My purpose is to first make easier on future installers, and secondly homeowners. Some models have locking mechanism on them, and if it leaks it more efficient to unplug them, say the drain clogs or someone installs the drain wrong and it gets backed from the sink, than to run to whatever location circuit panel is. Dishwasher and disposable can and should be on their own circuit together.
