Persepolis is the poignant story of a young girl in Iran during the Islamic Revolution. It is through the eyes of precocious and outspoken nine year old Marjane that we see a people's hopes dashed as fundamentalists take power
forcing the veil on women and imprisoning thousands. Clever and fearless, she outsmarts the "social guardians" and discovers punk, ABBA and Iron Maiden. Yet when her uncle is senselessly executed and as bombs fall around Tehran in the Iran/Iraq war, the daily fear that permeates life in Iran is palpable.
As she gets older, Marjane's boldness causes her parents to worry over her
continued safety. And so, at age fourteen, they make the difficult decision to send her to school in Austria. Vulnerable and alone in a strange land, she endures the typical ordeals of a teenager. In addition, Marjane has to combat being equated with the religious fundamentalism and extremism she fled her country to escape. Over time, she gains acceptance, and even experiences love, but after high school she finds herself alone and horribly homesick.
Though it means putting on the veil and living in a tyrannical society, Marjane decides to return to Iran to be close to her family. After a difficult period of adjustment, she enters art school and marries, all the while continuing to speak out against the hypocrisy she witnesses. At age 24, she realizes that while she is deeply Iranian, she cannot live in Iran. She then makes the heartbreaking decision to leave her homeland for France, optimistic about her future, shaped indelibly by her past.

I don't know how I found this film. A few years ago it was just on TV on some random channel and I was bored so I watched it, thinking it was a cartoon. Turned out to be a movie like nothing I'd ever seen before and showed me the true power of animation. Only now do I realize it was probably a huge influence on my desire to become an animator. Glad I finally discovered it's name. :)

It's a masterpiece. It should be compulsory watching in every school in the world, if only to show that Iranian people are human beings with the same feelings and desires as everyone else. The animation and the graphic novel transcend their mediums, and yet that's what makes it accessible to all.

This movie is so unique. It's not just that it's a serious animated film, or that it's about an understudied part of history, but in just how genuine it is. Beyond talking about the war; it explores the difficulties of growing up, family drama, depression, and all sorts of other parts of life. I can't think of many other films quite so earnest.

Imo this film is far superior than Ratatouille. Without any intention of demeaning Ratatouille, Persepolis is far richer in terms of storytelling and complexity of the issues it tackled. The saddest scene to me is when her dad holds her and Marji with her innocent face gives that laugh out of joy..You think of it as the happiest moment of your life, you think it's over and life will be good and ahhh so many hopes that are crashed so many laughs that turned to tears, so many prides that are smashed...And it doesn't get brilliant even if you leave the country because there are so much difficulties ahead...I have felt and experienced every little bit of the story....

Just finished reading the book. Haven't seen the film yet, but the book was amazing. It's humbling to read what some children experience at the hands of adults. And it's not a pop against Islam per se (this just happens to be the context of Satrapi's upbringing - she's only presenting her experiences) - it's an expose of what happens when ideologies and desire for power consume people - be it religious or political.

I'm from the US as well, and an animator, and it's disturbing to see what the industry has become, where 2D movies such as this are known primarily on word-of-mouth, yet anything made in 3D gets distributed nationally. That's still why to me, the most interesting movies with fascinating storylines are still movies that are 2D and aren't made in the US. Plus this movie isn't hard to find. Hell, I rented it from the library and thought it was awesome!

@hornsofdavid. You make a few really good points. I agree it is amazing and powerful film. Also yes I see what you mean about the Iron Madien soundtrack, but prehaps they could not get the rights to the music. But I think we both agree that this is a truly amazing piece of entertaiment. Good call.

Yes, I have an Iranian girlfriend who lives in Tehran, and I also made some good friends when I visited Iran last year who keep me updated. I also constantly chat with people from there, included women's rights workers, and because of my channel in KZbin I have been contacted by some of those Iranian activists based in CA who get a lot of space in Western media to supposedly complain about the human rights situation in Iran, and Ive got really bad impressions from talking with them via e-mail.

I can't be too angry with Ratatouille winning. Sure Persepolis was the superior film, especially with its creative composition and use of animation. But Ratatouille was such a good film and is clearly what Academy voters like. The fact that this wasn't even nominated for best foreign language film, however, still pisses me off.

If you did proper research you would find out that wars caused by religion is dwarfed by several other factors. Quoting religious scriptures doesn't prove anything, just as it doesn't prove the existence of a God. I implore you that you go to your local library and study the Encyclopedia of War. While religion definitely plays major roles, it is not so black and white.
@kikookikaboo7808
@kikookikaboo7808 6 жыл бұрын
Ok, what are you trying to assume? Any people believing Religion has any link with a war is a fool. Any people believing wars are not so black and white is a fool because they are VERY straightforward, each of them. Wars are always created by a minority (powerful people) for the sake of their own advantage. Since that doesn't appeal to anyone to die for another person to become rich or powerful you only need a good reason in the eye of the people to make that war. - Religion is widely used as it's very popular. - Nationalism as it touches the biggest common denominator of an entire nation. - Preventive wars : as masses are very fearful it's easy to select an enemy for any reason (political beliefs, religion, race and origins etc) and then tell how dangerous he can be even if he won't (i.e. Saddam) With those 3 justifications you cover about 99.9% of each war. If anyone here believes a war is NOT done by a handful of people for their own prestige or bank account, he's a fool, an idiot. All the rest is just excuses.
