Your gift is that you make your audience feel at home as you invite us into your world and that would resonate regardless of the accent you possess! I worked retail at Tiffany & Co. and I spent four years working with some of the best professionals, however, it did ugly within "the little blue box". From the day after Thanksgiving to December 24 it was 6 days a week, 7:00AM to 10:00PM, quotas tripled as sales personnel started to snip at each other and poach customers. Lines of customers waiting to be serviced were three to four deep and they were not always kind to one another or us, and Christmas Eve was the worst because I knew more than half of the impulse buys that many of "last minute" shoppers purchased were coming back the day after Christmas and we had to turn that return into another sales opportunity. With that said, those few days really tested one to exercise "grace under pressure" and what I learned handling those experiences I called upon many times in my career!

I like your accent. I don't think we Americans are as concerned with "origin stories" and keeping people in their place. Most Americans are constantly reinventing themselves, no questions asked. As long as you are honest about your background, and you always are, whose business is it? I grew up in a working class New York family and though neither of my parents had a "New York" accent, some of my family developed it. I made a conscious effort to adapt a softer, mid-Atlantic accent and I've stuck to that. No one ever questions it.

@@equatorialjourney4478 A change in accent doesnt mean one is not being authentic. Language and accents change if you leave where you are and you mingle with others. My native lanaguage isnt English, and even in my native tongue this happens. Also happens with several other languages im exposed to and familiar with. The accents of expats with my native tongue in my country change when they live here for a bit. People from their home countries always tell that they have lived abroad for a while. They do not do this to impress anyone, they need to do they can be understood and intrgrate into the place. In general language and accents change with time. Your great grandparents would possibly not understand you if you spoke today, even if its the same language. Dont confuse adaptation and change with being inauthentic. It is a natural process. Leaving your environment for over a decade and not changing is what is not natural.

@@Enne- Accent “authenticity” aside, I would say Nicolas doesn’t necessarily owe us any level of authenticity. He’s creating content for consumption and doing a pretty good job of it organically. I’ve been watching since about six months into his channel and while content is a bit all over the place as he finds his stride he’s actually been fairly forthcoming with his and/or his characters background. Which you can’t say about a lot of big KZbinrs who are fake fake fake but get zillions of views and follows. Like sure his accent is very affected (and the living in Dubai and Scotland thing doesn’t make you sound like you’re imitating the queen so I take that with a grain of salt though I know we all have differing opinions) but he’s living a nice life from sharing himself online and he’s not hurting anyone doing so or grifting and that’s becoming rarer in todays world.

But, if you are going into a career involving speaking publicly, a certain accent is definitely more salable. I lived the the New York City area for 18 years. Then I moved to Washington D.C. for about 10 years and then to Atlanta Ga for 20 years. I have no more northern accent unless I am around other Northerners. I do not have a Southern accent, however I do use some Southern phrases. Completely understandable!

Nice comment. Nicolas is great. I have lived in the USA for 20 yrs then India, then Australia. Now have to decide where to put down roots for old age. Miss the UK which is where I am from.

I’m a Birmingham girl. When I was young I talked very much like you do now around one set of Grandparents as they wouldn’t allow the accent in their home. I loved your video at your sisters house where there was a brummie twang to your voice. Like you once I’m around family my accent comes back 😃

This is such a great video Nicolas! Partly because it's interesting to hear your take on yourself and what you're about, but also as I'm a gay son who moved away to search for adventures elsewhere despite loving my family very much. I can also relate to your accent changes. I had (and often still have!) a fairly strong Manchester accent, but I live in Barcelona and don't have any Manc friends here, so I've had no choice but to soften my accent. It's true what you say, it just happens! Great Q&A and good luck with the romantic side of things. I can certainly relate to that too! 😀

Hello from Texas! Stumbled across your channel and I love your videos. I hate that anyone is commenting on your accent. It is lovely and such a soothing tone that I enjoy hearing when I watch your videos of decorating, gardening and cooking tips. Love the content and your kind demeanor.

oh what a refreshing video you have made. Believe me when I tell you that I am about as opposite from you in many ways as one could be, but clearly your kindness, honesty, and creativity have drawn me to your channel. I do appreciate your brand and style and thank you.

I'll have your "performance" voice /accent any given time. Your manner of speaking, no matter what part of the world you're from or if you're "faking" it or not, is one of the best I've heard on youtube. It's so soothing to the ears, so clear, so easily understable 💕. Some British or Scottish and Irish accents are too hard I couldn't understand a word they say, so I move on to another person's video. See, in your business (social media entertainment) a lot of people forget the most basic premise of it which is communication. You have to be loud and clear in delivering your message so you could get a feedback. And you Nicolas are doing a great job! More power.

I would not cope as well as you do if people were constantly questioning my accent! It is such a personal thing! I did nearly a decade in a call centre. I look back and wonder how I ever survived. It was truly horrible. Thank you for the video!

I moved to France from California at age 36. Kids, life, hubs .. went back every year (5-6 weeks) with kids so they could know their large family (10 cousins!) and speak more English. Then in August 2020, daughter 27, and son-in-law moved from France to Atlanta nearby one of her Aunts. I've always encouraged my children to travel and even expect them to move away. I know they love me and nowadays there's WhatsApp and other social media. And planes ... Traveling is so educational and opens the eyes & the soul and sometimes the heart. So not good when family/friends make one feel inadequate or guilty for moving away. Alysen

Being honest and open. Having a fine art degree with Honours I feel the large map art need to be displayed on top of each other, that way they will elevate the hight of your ceiling. The maps are supposed to sit side by side because one street runs into the other so it’s like they have been split in half. If that makes sense?

I can relate Nicholas. I lived in Dubai for five years and my New Zealand accent softened a lot. I made an effort to enunciate my words clearly, otherwise I’d find myself repeating sentences! Some people are also able to do this easier than others. I think you have found your true voice Nicholas 🙌

What a genuine, nice guy you are. I'm from the USA, so I just thought you had simply cultivated your speech to be fancy and refined! My grandmother was always big on enunciating and speaking carefully, neither of which I do to this day; but I appreciate the effort. It's nice to see someone living intentionally; that takes a lot of courage. Keep up the good work!

I can vouch for an accent change, when you live away from where you grew up. I moved to a different country from the West Coast of America, and when I speak English, I now have a hybrid accent that people can't put their finger on. To me I don't sound very different, but to others it's very noticeable. I get accused of trying to be a pretender, but in reality I had to train myself to have the accent in the foreign language to pronounce words correctly, it became muscle memory.

Absolutely Hils B! I moved to France at age 36 from L.A. Hubs is French. Speaking French has had an effect on my American English though I did go back to visit every year with my kids! And let's not even speak about forgetting English words or not even knowing them since I had my children here in France and then computers and cellphones came to be 😻. Accents are wonderful and being 'the American accent' here sparks many interesting conversations.
@Dread_Pirate_Rolf2 жыл бұрын
@@alcg3981 I can 100% believe that an American living in France will force you into having an accent in English. lol. I suspect you won't find many native speakers who want to entertain American English.

@@Dread_Pirate_Rolf Mais OUI, au contraire! People hear my accent and want to practice their English!

Absolutely. I grew up in Houston, Texas, and then moved to New York. People would stop and stare at me when I was talking, and not necessarily in a good way. My accent changed and developed as a result. Not out of embarrassment, but more to just fit in and keep under the radar. Now “y’all” sounds weird to me, but so does “youse guys.”
