I think outside of literal visual outfit inspiration, what can really help someone trying to find their personal style is thinking about their individual interests. For me, I've been cultivating a personal style since I was a kid just taking the shows, music, art, sports, films I love and letting them inspire me, my wardrobe and personality - which, as you said, is ever changing as we mature and evolve. Understanding that we as human beings are not just a single visual expression that can be summed into an aesthetic but a collection of all the things we love and loathe can really help guide how we present ourselves to the world.

I found having a more than basic level of fabric/fashion literacy has really helped shape my personal style - I know about all the different fabric options and what I like (and don't like) the feel of against my skin; I know about fashion styles throughout history so I can pick bits from previous eras - I'm a huge fan of the 1930's puffed shoulder, which was inspired by the Georgian and Edwardian eras and again used in the 1970s. Having a decent level of education about fashion history has done wonders for me and helped me find things that suit my personality and MY body shape, rather than seeing a modern day 'trendy' outfit on someone who's 5'9" and a bean pole - I'm 5'2" and hourglass - so what suits my body isn't what looks good on someone else - but I have the knowledge base to experiment with different shapes, cuts and fabrics.

The trick with the pictures is very clever. I have been searching for „my style“ a lot lately and often looked at pictures like the ones you showed. It didn’t help, one reason is probably that celebrity bias. Personal style takes a lot of courage, especially if one isn’t a typical beauty. I have a good feeling about what I like but have been taught not to wear tight clothes or deep necklines and getting rid of these notions takes some time. But I feel that one positive about the whole TikTok styles situation is that there isn’t this one trendy style anymore one has to follow or, on the other hand, individual style has become trendy.

I I highly recommend that from time to time, preferably before the start of the next season, to open your wardrobe and spend some time trying on what you already have in different configurations, with different accessories. If you really like a set of clothes, take a photo and then add it to a separate folder on your phone. This way you will create a gallery of outfits, and you will never waste time looking for a set.

i think it’s also really worth to look at things in your closet and really thinking about if you’re going to/enjoy wearing it, i used to hate my style that i used to love because it didn’t align with my interests anymore, i’m not calling for an immediate disregard of old garments, but look at what you have and think of if you can style it differently and if you cant and ultimately don’t feel comfortable in it you can upcycle or donate it

I was bullied as a kid and as a teen, and so I grew up wanting to be anyone but me. I was constantly trying to reconstruct myself into a more likeable or marketable character. It came to point where I just didn't know who I was, or what I actually liked. Recently, I started to think about what I found cool as a kid, the things that have never really changed, that I've never really stopped liking or finding cool, that felt like home, that felt right. And I realised that I always had had this idea of a cool "rocker" (as I used to say), a style that mixed different decades of rock n roll style into something more minimalistic and timeless. I had this distinct memory of watching Joan Jett's I Hate Myself For Loving You music video on the family computer, and thinking it was the coolest thing I had ever seen. I also grew up with Bratz, who had their own rendition of rockstar style, and the X-Men movies (I loved Wolverine). Finally, I also realised that I had admired this style for practically forever, but always found a reason why "that wasn't for me": I wasn't skinny enough, wasn't cool enough, it was too attention-grabbing or required a level of confidence I did not possess. I'm still working through my trauma, and this isn't the only style I gravitate to (no one fits into one aesthetic), but I find going back to my little kid self and what she found cool, to be pretty helpful.

They don't really know that they are being sold a lot of garbage clothing and due to social media, they are bombarded with too many ideas. When you say that you still buy from fast fashion brands when it’s the only option, what sort of items do you mean? I definitely make exceptions for some things, but I do sometimes wonder if I just haven’t looked hard enough for other options (or if I don’t really need the thing in the first place).
@katierobinson
@katierobinson 4 ай бұрын
@@thevoidfish (1/2) i go through a whole process before i end up buying something anyway: - do i actually need this - can i style it 3,4,5 different ways with what i already have - how long do i think i’ll wear it / would it be better to rent it - do i like it enough to care of it (for things like expensive bags or harder to wash materials like wool) - what am i actually looking for (being really clear about the specific things i want, like if it’s a skirt then does it have to be a certain length? style? waist height? material? to get the look i want) only once i’m satisfied with that list, i move down this one: - can i get it 2nd hand - if no, can i get it from somewhere sustainable? (for this i do my own research on brands, inc looking at Good on You and for smaller brands rather than big ones) - if still no, does a fast fashion brand sell it? does it look like it’s actually good quality if so (here i pay particular attention to materials since that’s most important for longevity)
@katierobinson
@katierobinson 4 ай бұрын
(2/2) having said all that, i will buy something from fast fashion (even if there’s another option i could get 2ndhand/ sustainable) if it fits what i’m looking for better (and i’m happy with materials) bc the most sustainable choice is to buy something you’ll keep for the longest time. wearing clothes again and again, loving them to the point of repairing if they break, is the best thing you can do!!
@sarahthatcher123

I still buy fast fashion when 1) I cannot get the item secondhand and 2) even if I could find it from a ‘sustainable’ brand, I really could never afford it. I also find it next to impossible to get a proper fit in this more structured/ fitted type of item because I am large but very short and most sustainable brands have very limited sizing and fits. My example is , I bought a cream utility jacket from Old Navy . Because I cannot feel how soft the material is via online and that is one of the most important qualities in that type of item for me and I know this type of item is generally made of very thick, stiff material . The one from Old Navy is extremely soft so I know I will actually wear it. And even if I could find one online from a sustainable brand, because it is a ‘jacket’ it is automatically more expensive, ( way out of any realistic budget for me even when I’m willing to pay quite a bit more for good quality, sustainable etc.) but I still have limits. Then add shipping and currency exchange, and duties I have to pay let alone return shipping if it doesn’t work out or to try a different size. That is a lot of money I have to pay and will never get back just to try the item. Also, I am petite so I know that generally this type of item does not fit well on me. So when I saw one and tried it on in Old Navy,it was ‘worth it’ for me. I still think it is sustainable’ when I purchase an item that I know I’ll wear a lot and for a long time versus one I am much less likely to enjoy as much and have to sell or donate in a short amount of time. I have items I bought from ‘The Gap’ ( 2 different white cotton tops one blouse one tank type blouse) that are literally, not exaggerating, 24 years old. I remember because of where I was working at the time and I did not have a lot of money and they were $60 each and they both needed altering so I paid about $80 each for them all in which I thought was insane. But I thought because they are classic white cotton I would wear them for a long time and they wouldn’t go out of style. Boy was I right. Just the one is now looking a little dingy in the armpit area. And these have been my go to items and worn them a lot every season. To me that IS ‘sustainable’ , environmentally friendly shopping. However, the only thing I still really do not like is that I know how bad the Gap and Old Navy are in terms of human ethics and treatment of workers etc. So for that reason I do still try to not shop there as much as possible and it is rare for me because of that issue alone. The other item I often feel I need to buy from fast fashion is knitwear ( sweaters, cardigans, ‘jumpers’) again mostly due to the cost of more natural fibres being so much higher and again the difficulty in finding a good fit. I cannot have knitwear altered/ hemmed. So if I find something that truly ‘works’ and fits and is something I really need then I will buy fast fashion. But I have also been slowly purchasing extremely expensive, natural knits but only one per year. And I also have many thrifted knitwear items of course. I also buy fast fashion when I am wanting to try a new ‘style’ ( and there are no thrifted items to be found). For example, I wanted to change from wearing pj shorts, t- shirts and sweatshirts around the house to trying ‘dresses’ so I look a little more ‘put together’. I really enjoy my comfy sweats etc. comfort is key, so I had no idea if a dress would even work. I first looked at some sustainable rands but I did not want to pay $100 + just to see if wearing a short, cotton gauze material would work, e comfortable enough. I did not know what exactly I would want or need in style/ details for a dress to work. So I purchased some cheap Old Navy dresses in a cotton gauze and in certain colors and cuts/ styles and lengths. One had no sleeves and one had short sleeves. I discovered I much preferred the short sleeve to no sleeve and on and on. I am so glad I did not spend over $100 on a sustainable brand dress because there were so many details I did not know I wanted, needed and preferred. Now that I’ve worked out all of those details I am now ready to purchase an expensive one from a sustainable brand. I only purchased 2 of the Old Navy ones in order to figure all of these things out. And I will still wear them until they wear out. I am so glad I did this ‘experiment’ Efren shopping sustainable. Thrifting first is usually a better way but for this circumstance it did not work. There are not a lot of cotton gauze dresses in thrift stores because it is a relatively ‘newer fabric offering’ that is not in thrift stores let alone in specifically, a dress.

When you were talking about that skirt, it reminded me this mary jane shoe trend. When I first saw it (with more than 3 minibelts), I didn't like it that much. But after I¨ve seen is so many times... now I am looking for my perfect forever piece. xD Tbh, I think that trends can help you to find your new core pieces of wardrobe, but one has to go about it in clever way, not just let themselves be influenced and forget it shortly after.

as someone who now has personal style, and definitely did not 3 years ago, a few signs and notes: -We all don’t have access to the same clothes. And i don’t really know if that matters or not -sign 1: outfits “fall” together. The other day i told my cousin i wasn’t gonna try hard, but turned an outfit anyway. I have to try to have a bad outfit. sign 2: one new clothing item should make at least 5 new outfits. One of my rules used to be “If you can’t make 3 outfits with this piece, you can’t buy it” sign 3: you regularly walk out of stores without buying anything. You know what you like and you don’t feel pressured to settle!

Okay this is going to be an essay, but it worked so well for me I have to share. So I started developing my personal style by thinking of a phrase that defined how I wanted to dress in a super clear way for myself, it doesn't matter how weird it sounds to anyone else, but if it gives you a super clear, solid, detailed idea for a base outfit, that's what you want. So mine is "I want to dress like Bellatrix Lestrange in the AU fanfiction I write of her" (no judgement lol). That gives me SO much, the overall vibe, specific types of pieces, how things fit, a color palette, and most importantly a base outfit. So what do I mean by base outfit? Well, when I think of mine, the first thing that pops into my mind when I hear the phrase is a skirt with tights and boots, either a tank top or turtle neck depending on the weather, and an over piece of some sort (a sweater, a jacket, a cardigan, a sweater vest, etc), in a colour palette using mainly dark neutrals (maybe light neutrals to break it up), greens, and maroons. Also, I tend to think of fitted garments, though the over piece can be more oversized, again information that seems obvious to me from my phrase. Now I try to only add things to my wardrobe that are only one step or less away from the base outfit. For example, I have a burnt orange sweater vest that I love, that would be one step away because it's one of the types of pieces in that base outfit, but it's not in the core colour palette (but does compliment it and makes sense with the rest of the colour palette). I don't like wearing skirts every day, so the pants I have are a step away because they're pants, but I keep them all in the color palette. I find that keeping my closet about 60% what I think of as my "Bellatrix wardrobe" and 40% "everything else" works really well because the majority of the time I get to dress in my ideal style, but I don't get board because I can incorporate all the random other styles that I like, but just have a couple pieces of because I don't want to dress like that all the time, into my life. IDK if this would work for other people or not but man am I glad I figured this out because it works so well for me.

I've found pinning stuff I actually would like to buy the best way to see what I actually like! I will go to the sites I enjoy or if I see something I like and would buy if funds allowed at that time then I'll pin it and that works for me 😊
