I am an ex-felon recently released after 22 and a half years. I volunteer for a nonprofit. I'm very excited about getting into cybersecurity to protect people and companies, but I'm wondering is it a field that my past history will allow me to flourish in before I invest in training

That is a tough situation because 1. companies can be cautious on hiring in general, and 2. security roles typically have access to a lot of critical parts of a company. With that being said, it's not impossible but you will have a challenging road ahead. Of course it also depends on what your actual crime(s) were. I would google Kevin Mitnick who spent time in prison and turned into a successful consultant.

hey Jon, I'm a sophomore in college (year 2/4), and I have 2 years left, what time frame could you give me for a cybersecurity certification path. I have no certs now, and would like to get a high entry level job. what would you recommend?

You will want to grab a free copy of my eBook on Cyber Security Careers ( www.jongood.com/newsletter/ ). I lay out a path that will take you around 2-3 years to complete (depending on how hard you work), and by the end you will have a lot of desirable skills especially for an entry level employee. I would highly suggest you take advantage of internships or part time work so you have some legitimate experience on your resume...this will help tremendously when it comes time to apply for full time employment.

I will include helpful resources but there is no way I can include all the resources I've used over the years. On many of my videos, especially videos on certifications, I have already included a lot of resources that I used to prepare so I would definitely check out those videos. Also, I would highly encourage you to visit my courses page ( www.jongood.com/courses/ ) because I have several courses that are constantly being updated (some of which are not on KZbin), and they cover many of the hot topics that people should be learning.
