Thank you for getting back to me. I have watched you use last year using the electric dethacher, but I a almost a 1/2 lot and that small unit will take forever. So, would be best to rent a power rack or find someone to do it? Finally, whats the best weed killer for my rock beds that also can work as a pre emergent? No weeds yet so something that works with no weeds exposed yet and with weeds exposed. THANK YOU!

Ginja, I know that would be a different type of video but could you do a video that shows a list or schedule what you need to do for lawn care from the beginning of the season to the end of the season. Listing the different products to use through the season. I am new to the lawn care game, and just bought a new house this year and it had new laid sod this spring. Any help you can give I would truly appreciate it. Thank you and keep up the great work,

@@pestandlawnginja Thank you for the reply truly appreciate it. If the video comes out, I hope it helps new homeowners. So I live in a little bit of a different area than you, the Kansas City area. With new sod, what are some of the thing you should and shouldn’t do the first year? You can research so much online your head spins and no way of telling what is right. Honestly some people are just keyboard warriors. I’m not afraid to work I just need to know that I’m going in the right direction. I plan on hand raking the whole yard “maybe buying a Sun Joe” to remove thatch and any debris that occurred from the lawn being laid down and the little bit of dead stand. What else can I do the help the yard besides water it? Any advice would be great. Thank you again,

I’m someone who recently became obsessed with lawn care after only mowing a lawn less than a handful of times in my 34 years. Now I’m watching all your videos on KZbin and am about to spend all this money on a Sun Joe when I didn’t even know what thatch was 2 weeks ago. I raked my yard with a groundskeeper II rake and although an awesome rake for the job I should’ve just bought the machine now that I know I can thatch regularly and not just once every year or two like I previously thought! P.S. that dog is freaking adorable 😍

YO Ginja, I've got about 7000 sq/ft of Zoysia that was sodded in around 16 years ago. It's been struggling this year. The lawn has been core aerated a number of times but never dethatched. Last week I cut it down to 2" and spent yesterday dethatching it - I got probably 20 garbage cans of material. I was surprised how 'non-abusive' the dethatching process was. I feel like my lawn can breathe again. Hoping for a quick recovery. Sorry for the long comment - really just wanted to say big thanks for the vids - good stuff.

I use my thatch rake at least once per month over the summer. I'm in Canada, Montreal, to be exact. We had quite a hot summer here and more to come. Actually right now my grass is needing a lot of repair due to the extreme heat and not much rain. The sun was too extreme to keep it watered properly. Hot, hot, hot!! @@pestandlawnginja Hmm. I dethached a section on the least aggressive setting. The rakings were 50/50 green grass to brown and .. the lawn looks far worse than when I started so I stopped. It's like it ripped out a lot of what was making the grass somewhat green. I hope it repairs over the next week or two.

@@PNWLawnGuy It's only been 3 days -- it has not improved. At the moment, if I had to go back in time .. I wouldn't have done it. It kind of seems like .. perhaps the summer heat stress has a ~third of the blades go dormant -- but power raking/dethatch may have ripped out that dormant grass which is not what you'd want. Seems like the lawn is doomed for a few months until October.

Just dethatched for the first time three weeks ago. So I'm glad you didn't say "don't do it when it's hot". HA! I can also attest that the Sun Joe machine is fantastic. My lawn is about 9500sqft, and I only did half of it (I'm experimenting to dial my treatment in before doing the 2nd half), but I filled up 2 green waste containers along with tamping the thatch down after every dump into the container. The lawn is recovering beautifully, though.

I can confirm, well, maybe you helped me confirm with your confirmation that this can be done lol. I finally got my sunjoe and dethatched the whole lawn twice in different directions and filled up 2 whole trash cans. Then the next week I did one pass dethatch, then one pass scarifier and again filled the trash cans. Then I threw down some new grass seed and covered it with 5 bags of peat moss. I still have a few trouble area which I think my sprinklers are not hitting enough but the lawn has really transformed beautifully just in time for my wife and daughter to move here with me (my motivation for all the hard work). I also took fotos because I was shocked how much stuff it pulled out. I am glad to hear I can do it often and will probably do it again near the end of summer so the new grass gets settles. and before winter doing another reseed but with more topsoil/peat mixture. Thank you so much for your videos! They have helped me greatly!!

I use a Brinly Hardy dethatcher. They do work well if the adjustments and angles of the springs are set correct. (The springs are actually supposed to pop forward and toss thatch forward). I have had great success with 4 passes of the tow behind type. Two perpendicular to the others. Good luck.

you want to mix the herbicides for what you use. they will last a few weeks but slowly weaken. you need to decides if you're going to apply the herbicides over the entire area or spot spray. I commonly apply the herbicides over the entire area when the weeds are really bad. I will do that every 4 weeks for 3 to 4 months for the first season then re evaluate the season after. As for the milo..... that can go down anytime. If you don't have annual grasses to treat you do not need to add the quinclorac

I noticed with my greenworks dethatcher set to it's lowest setting that is doesn't get much out of my lawn that is mowed between 3" to 3.5". I'm assuming that's just because the grass is too tall for this light machine to get down through the grass blades. This Fall I'm planning on taking the lawn gradually down to 2" then dethatch with it. I know there is a lot of material I need to get out. Great video and info.

I just did mine yesterday. I am just under my first year of taking back my lawn. I have overseeded and still have a bit of starter fert that is finally dying out. We were blessed with a "second spring" of cool wet weather so I overseeded and did the starter fert a month ago. I needed to fill in the patchy lawn and I am almost there. Two month ago there were gaps everywhere. I bought a sprayer and dusted the lawn for weeds which did a great job. Then I noticed the grass clippings were starting to pile up from the fast growing grass and frequent mowing. It was causing issues as it piled up where the dead weeds were. So I dethatched and switched to bagging. Now it's time to lay down some fert with iron. It has only tapped 95 degrees for about 5 days up here in Canada and that was only for a few hours a day on those random days. Currently 62 degrees and raining on Monday. Lawn will be green(er) by mid to late week.

In my opinion it depends on the grass type and geographical location. In southeast VA with cool season turf (tall fescue) if you dethatch when it’s 90 degrees and dry, your lawn will be damaged. Even mowing in the heat will damage the grass. Which is fine if you don’t mind it looking that way until fall overseeding. I’ve never had to dethatch warm season turf because it bounces back on its own so easily with enough rain.

I did 2 test patches on my bermuda using my sunjoe. I did a 1250* using the scarifier and it really chewed up the lawn. I then did a 1500* using the dethatcher and it looks 10x better. I’m going to finish the rest of the 8000* on the dethatch cartridge. I put down milorganite after and have been watering it in. It’s been about 4 days and the scarifier is Slowly coming back, but after just a day the dethatch area is looking way cleaner. Thanks for the content, my lawn use to look like a golf course but I’ve neglected it for the past 2 years and it shows. P.S. it’s about 105* in Georgia with the heat index, so you can do it if you put in the work.

@@pestandlawnginja i had a ton of debris on top (2 years of side discharge on the zero turn) so i was hoping that the scarifier would give me sufficient slices to help the bermuda breath during the super high temps and get the fertilizer deep into the soil, but it just chewed up way to much for my liking. I'm going to run it again in the spring as the temps start getting up, and i'm going to plug next year as well, as i didn't do it this year. I also bought a honda push and have been bagging it this year, which has helped a ton. 8k square feet and i have about a full wheel barrow full of grass every cut (1.5") so that helps a ton now as well. thanks for the reply!!

Thankful that I caught this video! My lawn was suffering a lot of heat stress in spots despite adequate watering, etc, and getting some fungus. I was pretty sure I needed to dethatch the lawn but was unsure if it would do more harm than good. I was also pretty sure that thatch was the cause of the fungus as water was just being held there vs getting to the roots and with our recent heat waves here in NM, just smothering the ground and breeding fungus. Treated that curatively and it’s looking good now. Applied a preventive rate today to keep it up. Anyhow, I took your advice and gave it a go. Nothing too aggressive. I went old school and bought myself a thatch rake vs a powered one given my lawn is just below 1100sqft. Man was that a workout!! But it was worth it as it’s been nearly two weeks now and almost all the problem areas have recovered! Today I did some sprayin’ and prayin’ with my new BioStimulant pack, so here’s hoping it’s heading in the right direction.

Awesome Aaron! The dethatch alone I would charge $400. I would charge $65 for the tenacity treatment and explain the risks of bleaching. The seed is a tough one, the peat isn't too expensive but you'll need 3 or 4 bails to do it right at $20 each and the seed price will depend on what seed you buy. I try and shoot for a profit of $150 per hour and then the cost of the materials.

you can power rake twice a year with a traditional power rake. you can use dethatchers like the sun joe / greenworks dethatchers because they are non invasive to the soil. I tested out using the dethatcher weekly and I felt it was a bit excessive. I'll dial it back to monthly next season and then use the scarifier twice as well. I have kentucky bluegrass that enjoys being beat up a bit here and there.

I have a LOT of thatch on my lawn. Its so bad that the lawn is already struggling and it's the start of summer. The sad part is that I already removed 23, 42 gallon bags of thatch in the Spring. Closer to the end of summer I'll go really aggressive with the dethatching and then follow up with core aeration. I have been guilty of leaving the grass too long when the ground freezes in winter. I'll cut it much lower this year. I am going to estimate that I'll have about 50+ bags of thatch when I'm done. I am not looking forward to it.

I didn’t do another pass bcuz it would of been way to much, I’d have to hire a day worker. I have a question tho, do you think that debris can absorb fertilizers and nutrients .? I know it absorbs water and you need to irrigate a lot longer to get deep . Thanx . Oh when you talk about them other guys I know who you really mean lol. They use liquid dethatch. Please gimme a break. No liquid can do what a sun joe does.

As usual, another great video! I dethatch a couple times a year, but am for sure going to do it much more often now. I live in middle TN and have Tall Fescue on my lawn, but I always seem to have a layer of dead debris (perhaps because I’m not dethatching often enough?) As I understand, Tall Fescue likes to be taller, like, 3 1/2 to 4” or so? 1. When I dethatch, do I need to cut the lawn low first? 2. After dethatching, should the watering schedule be modified until the stress normalizes? Or keep it the same? 3. Does using a “high lift” blade and bagging the clippings result in less dead debris? I understand that the clippings provide nutrients for the soil, but if I’m fertilizing regularly, is mulching even needed? Thanks for your help-again!
@pestandlawnginja
@pestandlawnginja 2 жыл бұрын
all fantastic questions 1. depends on the dethacher you use. a power rake can handle heights up to 3" where a sun joe needs 2" or lower 2. you can keep your watering schedule as long as your properly watering already 3. the blades and types will all be subject to the type of mower you have. I've seen quad cuts outperform hi lifts only because of the type of mower.

I’ve also been following your videos and dethatched my lawn with my Sunjoe dethatcher at 97 degrees because truly believe that buildup I had was choking the lawn and open for a fungus. I removed 4 garbage cans full of debris, but now now lawn looks dull and a few bare spots that I fear weeds would start growing out of. Please share some advice on what should I do now? Thanks for your help

Prove your water coverage. See myallgreen.com/watering and perform the video exercise at the end of the page . Chances are your coverage is off. 90% of your success will be proper watering

I bought a machine that's just like the Sun Joe, but different name and color, Cocraft HSR 1300. It does come with a collector though. And the roller is both scarifing and detaching, so I'll be buying those separately from Sun Joe :P

Ginja, great channel! I am planning to dethatch, fertilize (to prep the soil for over seeding), scarify, and then overseed. The two questions I have for you how long should I wait between dethatching, fertilizing, scarify/overseed? And is it over kill to dethatch, and then scarify later? I dropped a lot of cash on seed and some top dressing for the bare spots in the lawn and want to make sure I’m giving the seeds and the lawn the best chance next spring. Thoughts? If it helps I live in Minneapolis, MN.

I do it all the same day. You can do it later as well. "they" like to say its too much stress on the lawn but the grass doesn't care. I like to get everything out of the way when I do these jobs at my own house and pound it out the same day.

Most people will tell you you can't grow grass under a pine tree. I live in NE Ohio and my 3 pine trees do what I call a needle drop twice a year. Keep those needles up and grass has no problem growing right up to the tree trunks.

Hey Ginja, I'm dethatching this weekend. Planning on using a pull behind tine type. What kind of things do I need to be aware of? Its my first go at it. Your videos inspired me to give it a shot, Slay that lawn!

Great way to do it mike! The biggest issue is making sure the machine doesn't dig too deep. just keep in mind its just grass and you can always grow more. Not much to it other than its hard work.
