I adopted my chinchilla from a shelter. We believe that she was just under a year old. Allowing me to pet her literally took a year and a half. I agree that the chew toys, hay, hanging toys, hay mats, wooden houses can be expensive due to the amazing frequency that everything gets chewed up. That along with the fact that chinchillas are quite intelligent and need an ever-revolving set of toys so as not to get bored. Yes they are a prey animal through and through. She licks my finger when I pet her, but place her on the floor and it is immediately..."who are you?". They are usually sweet animals, but the prey behavior is strong in these creatures so humans should not expect to be able to cuddle them constantly.

Once you've bought everything initially, I found chinchillas to be extremely cheap to look after. I grab a couple of bags of granules and chinchilla salad every couple of months, the water is basically free, and like 3 years ago i got him a 4.5kg bucket of sand and its only half empty. A big bag of hay lasts forever too. So yeah, the initial spending is alot, but afterwards its pretty cheap.
@loriensieh62463 жыл бұрын
?!?!? I don't see the sand being relevant unless you bathe your chinchilla in it. You're supposed to bathe your chinchilla in volcanic ash, in case you didn't know. Also, they should be eating pellets and timothy hay, I'd recommend Oxbow. Fruits, nuts, and veggies are extremely unfit for their diet, as the high sugar content can cause bloating. Seeing as you might be fairly new at owning a chinchilla, you want to avoid any plastic, anything not strictly a-ok for them, small wires they can get limbs stuck in, and brands like Kaytee and Carefresh. In terms of treats, I give my chinchillas oats occasionally (up to about 2 oats/day) and a dried rose hip at most once daily (high vitamin c content, is good for them, but can cause weight and bloating if offered too often.) If you have any questions, don't hesitate to let me know. A good reliable source of information about how to care for a chinchilla and tips would be planetchinchilla.com. Hopefully this helps you and your chinchilla(s) out!

yeah i agree, especially if you buy everything in bulk, you're pretty much set for a long while before you have to go out and buy more :)
@TheRamoach3 жыл бұрын
@@loriensieh6246 I get the feeling you know exactly what I meant even though admittedly, I used the wrong terms. My chinchilla bathes in dust and eats pellets. And as I mentioned with the 'dust', I've been using it for 3 years, so I wouldn't say I'm "fairly new" to owning a chinchilla. The info you gave is useful for new chinchilla owners however.

I remember when I got my two chinchillas, me and my mom were discussing pets and some how ended up at a PetSmart and bought two of them, got a big cage lots of food treats and proper care tools. Although we had all the proper things for them, we had done close to zero research! But we realized they were way more then they thought, I did a TON of research and still am to this day (for fun). At first I was nervous they wouldn’t live a good chinchilla life but we worked it all out. To this day they are both my two little spoiled children (they act like spoiled brats lol). After months of healthy chinchillas, Lulu (one of the two chinchillas) got a big bump on her chest, we took her to the vet and since chinchillas don’t have a good breeding system then tend to have all the same health problems. She got the bump drained but later it came back, and she went into surgery… ever since she has been healthy as can be! But a few months later Chica (the other chinchilla) got the same thing, but this time it was more related to her teeth. And unlike Lulu this wasn’t just and infected cut, she was full on sick. We didn’t risk surgery because it was expensive and she most likely would survive it! So the best was to keep giving her medication and hoping for the best. But soon she stopped eating and rarely drank water… so every morning, after I got home from school, and before bed I would spoon/syringe feed her some Critical-Care and water. But she was still so skinny, and you could easily feel every bump on her spine. But one day we get back from school and the bump had popped! We where scared, she was exposed. We both thought she was gonna die in our hands. But she didnt, she kept fighting. The vets were so surprised that they were hearing that she was better, instead of hearing her pass. She is healthy today, we think she either has some minor mental problems or is a rung due to her past and current behavior. But that doesn’t change a thing in my eyes! I love both my babies and that will never change! 🥰 (AS LONG AS THEY STOP EATING MAH FINGERS 😤) lol

its great you got two and willing to put in all the effort and research needed. buying from pet stores generally isnt a good idea, its sad the animals are almost always sick. i had a pair of gerbils from a very small shop who took good care of the animals and probably also took then from smaller hobby breeders. they were healthy all their long lives of close to 6 / 7 yrs. The small shop closed down because theres a large one in town thats simply known and popular. all gerbils i had from there had severe health issues. one died very young for seemingly no reason. two brothers i had later both had cancer with large growing tumors in their belly, its devastating.

Another really important misconception is that you can trust pet stores to only label chinchilla safe things as "for chinchillas." Always do your own research into the food and toys you give them! They can't have a lot of things that would be fine for rabbits or guinea pigs, they can't have plastic or fruits or veggies (even dried! They can get diabetes or fatty liver), and pet stores rarely care.

Good video, there were some things I did not know, even though I studied animal psycholgy and keeping. Because there are just so many pets, especially rodents, chinchillas didn't get too much info. I used to keep gerbils and degus and miss having a pet at home, while my cat lives with my mom (cause its a lot nicer for her there ,as i dont have a balcony and mostly tilted roof windows, with no windowsill to sit on and I didnt want her to go through such a big, stressfull change, especially at her higher age) Chinchillas were pets I had considered for long, they are relatives to degus but there are some differences. One thing to consider though is that chinchillas should not be kept alone either. Like the majority of rodents except hamsters. Since in europe almost no one has air conditionioning and this roof apartment gets very hot, i wouldnt be able to keep the temperature down. Another reason why I havent gotten another pet yet, is that im quite sick often not feeling well, so I don't feel able to provide most pets with enough care and attention, as much as i would like to.

If one got out we had a little dog that would corner them for us to grab because they tended to get into spaces we couldn't easily get to. I’ve done a lot of research about a chinchilla, and my chinchillas cage is right next to where I sleep. I was wondering if chinchillas could get fleas or any other types of bugs on them, if so could you please give some tops to help prevent them. My parents would not let me keep her if she ends up getting fleas because I also have other animals in my room and do not want them to get fleas either. Thank you for the tips, I’m new to your channel and your channel is pretty useful to me! Thank you for taking proper care of your chinchilla as well, it looks so happy and comfortable where it’s at! Hello, I'm so happy for you! From my experience, it is rare that chinchilla will get flees simply because their fur is too dense, so the flees will suffocate 😂 One thing you do need to watch out for is ringworm. (it's not a worm, it's a fungus). If the environment that are in is not clean, the risk of getting ringworm is higher. But I'm sure you are going to take great care of her, so it shouldn’t be a problem! Oh and welcome to the channel! ❤️

What an adorable chinchilla ! Just might have to be careful about the wheel, it's actually not good for their back, since it doesn't suit the natural shape of their spine (so it can even become dangerous over time). Mine never had this but will usually run in a chin-proof room for 1 to 2h a day ^^
@Anonymous-ze4ls2 жыл бұрын
Like with hamsters, I assume the wheel is only harmful if it is too small, which is what causes the back to bend downwards while running, causing back problems from long term exposure. My own hamster will not run in a noisy wheel, and considering how extremely well all rodents hear and need to be alert, I'd say the wheel in the video is "harmful" in the sense that it must be very stressing for the chinchilla to run in such a noisy wheel. My previous hamster also despised when a wheel was noisy. Not having a wheel at all is also harmful, at least for hamsters as they run up to 9km every night and will thus be in need of exercise if they do not have a wheel. I don't know about chinchillas, but considering they are prey animals, I assume they also spend a lot of time running in nature, and would need a proper substitute for that in captivity. Hamsters are usually never comfortable with free roaming for more than 20 minutes at a time, and chinchillas seem to have the same need to feel safe. Thus I doubt that chinchillas like to be out for 1-2 hours straight every day, unless of course it's divided into 10-20 min intervals.

We had a chi chi who wouldn't stop yipping and hated us. He would run away any chance he could get. They're not all like that but I assume like cats, males are more standoffish.
@Chinchillakingdom3 жыл бұрын
yes, I totally agree with that, every chinchilla acts differently!

In Asia they are called Totoro. Expectation: Cute and fluffy. Reality: They can grow plants, grow up to 7 feet tall and call on flying cat bus at nighttime.
@babygorilla42333 жыл бұрын
Would it be weird or smart to keep them in the basement and change their day night schedule to fit when I'd like to play with them? It is the coolest part of the house. By change their schedule I mean make the lights come on with a timer at different times.

Also guinea pigs poop a lot too so yeah dont try getting one if you don't like cleaning poop three times a day

Chinchillas are so much like guinea pigs; they even make the same noices haha. (Of course not the same, but very similar: poop a lot, chew a lot, like to hide and not be held for too long)

Where and how should I get a chinchilla. I’ve done on the research on caring for it but now I just need to know where to get it from
@arfriedman45772 жыл бұрын
Very good info. I would recommend your video. You need an exotic vet in NJ, maybe elsewhere too. All animals are very smart. I miss my chinchillas and degus. - RIP

I loved my chinchilla, but he got out once, and REFUSED to go back into his cage. So I tied a string to the door, and sat across the room. OMG! He kept jumping off, and on the door like he KNEW what would happen 💀 Eventually he went in, I yanked the string, and he went CRAZY inside trying to get out 🤣 🤣 🤣

Hi! I have a question. My chinchilla sleeps during daytime and loves playing during night time so I keep a night light next to him to keep him active and not sleepy but I’m not sure if it’s a good idea. Do you have any recommendations for that kind of thing?

4:53, please show me a silent wheel, I have 4 and some mornings can be hell (I work graveyard so I sleep during most of the morning)
@Chinchillakingdom3 жыл бұрын
The best quality silent wheel is going to be the "chinspin" which is quite expensive. Just remember that no wheel is going to be truly soundless, there is always going to be a little noise. Hope this helped!!

Found a chin spin, just bought it. They better use it 😂

It makes me so jellly when people have cuddly chinchillas.. My Apollo hates everything including his first owner (my bf) but I've been slowly working with him to get him to love me, so far so good lmao
@kidzbop38isstraightfire923 жыл бұрын
Our chinchillas never let us pet them. Ever. We do let them run pretty wild, so I'm sure that's it, but I sometimes wish they'd let us pet/hold them.

Ooohh... Miss my TOV Violet boy. Had him for 10 years and then he died from pneumonia. Edit : Pandora chewing curtains and random things reminds of mine. So true. And mine would obsess over this random newfound chewing toy. He would kick up a fuss if I separate it from him. And he hates to be handled. He's only super good mood like 10% of the time where he would be photogenic and pose and hold namecards and don't move. But 90% of the time if I let him out he's exploring in a flash and I have to let him be for a while because I can't catch him until he calms down or gets bored.

I have never been around a chinchilla before, but if there is one thing I'd like to do before I die of old age in about 80 years time, it's to touch a chinchilla. I cannot possibly pass peacefully before I know just how soft they are.

Do you mean places you can get a chinchilla? There are many shelters that have chinchilla's as well as chinchilla breeder's. Depending on where you live, there may some breeders around you. If you live in America, here is a link to trustworthy breeders: www.empresschinchilla.org/ecbc-breeder-directory Hope it helped!
