To be fair, setting them up properly for your use case is more importwnt these days as they both have what it takes for great images. I prefer the Canon grip, the sony top dials make more sense, the canon direct controls make more sense, the canon lenses are exceptional, didnt really get to test too many sonys but am pretty sure they are good. For me the 15-35 and 70-200 plis 35 1.8 fit in my messenger bag and dont whey too much so i prefer the Canon but depending on what you shoot there are arguments for both

As far as video, the reason I chose the a7iv instead of the canon is because for vlogging with wide angle there’s no camera wobble unlike the canons which is terrible wide angle lens wobble during video. Also with active stabilization, the Sony is actually really good and you can even do a stabilization in post with catalyst. Also sony has a decent more amount more of dynamic range with S-Log3 and also a sharper video. Yes there is rolling shutter but really unless you’re using a 50mm+ and zooming fast side to side, it’s not as bad a people make it out to be. I’ve used an 85mm 1.8 and done pans left to right and as long as it’s not super fast it looks fine. They also have software to correct rolling shutter in post. And again the lens lineup is way bigger with cheaper options on Sonys. I have a 20mm f1.8 for vlogging and with active stabilization it’s great and also super sharp 4k. I think Sony wins video personally. Also especially with all the video formats a7iv has and canon r6 ii doesn’t have clog2 which is their best dynamic range pp, is pretty dumb. And you ONLY get 10bit color in Log profile with canon.

I was facing exactly this choice a couple months ago. I think the R6 II is a better overall camera but I went with the A7 IV mostly for the huge choice of lenses, the resolution bump is nice too as I find I am cropping photos a lot. Both are great cameras and I am very happy with my Sony. Had I have had lenses from either system previously that would have been enough to sway me over. Panasonic S5 II is also another solid choice that should not be overlooked, I wish I had that gimbal like IBS for video.
@apocryphal_man
@apocryphal_man 11 ай бұрын
True, went the same route. Btw the A7 IV stabilization is absolutely usable and is better than my S5s and the S5 II's if your lense is around 20 to 24 mm. Bad EVF and unusable video AF of the S5 made me buy the A7 IV, but I stayed for the lenses.

I bought the R6 II. However, I already regret it. Because I really wanted to use a Sigma 105mm f/1.4 and it is only available for Sony without using an adapter. At the moment I only have the RF 50mm f/1.8 and I don't intend to invest in any other Canon lens. I will stick to using the R6 II + RF 50mm f/1.8 as a point and shoot. For this use it is perfect. I put it on automatic (green) and just press the button. The Canon mecenary will never see my money again!
@grantmckee7633
@grantmckee7633 9 ай бұрын
@@apocryphal_man Yes, with some time with the camera the IBIS is pretty good with the Sony A7iv, plus there is the option of using the gyro data and Catalyst software to stabilize, there are ways to get smooth video. Sony prioritizes not having wiggly corners like Panasonic or Canon at the expense of jerky reframing.

@@michelecintramika8482 eventually Canon will have more RF lenses but I love my Sony 14mm F1.8 and Sigma 60-600mm lenses, Canon had nothing to compete with those yet. The only other camera mount close is L-mount for lens selection, for native lenses, adapting older lenses is a whole different ball game.

@@grantmckee7633 Canon will NEVER make a 105mm f/1.4 nor a wide angle f/1.4. And if it did, it would cost three times as much. I've always wanted a point-and-shoot camera, and the R6II + RF 50mm f/1.8 is fine for this use.

So much food for thought... I'm a happy Canon DSLR guy (mainly 7D2 and 1DX3), and my lenses are all Canon EF or EF-S, save for an old Tokina 19-35, and a soon-to-come Sigma 100-600C. I hadn't really considered moving to mirrorless, but I find myself getting more and more tempted to add the R62 to my arsenal.

Really fun episode, enjoyed the banter a great deal while getting all the info I wanted. I'm probably going jump ship from Panasonic to either Canon or Sony. Have been looking at the R7 vs the new a6700 and in the end it looks like the lens options for Sony is going to be what seals the deal for me. I'm not pleased with the image stabe in the Sony but the autofocus in video and video options are great as I do more video than photos. On that note, what are your thoughts on the Tamron 150-500 vs Sigma 150-600 specifically for wildlife video?

Great job on this video. It sort of proves that there is room for something better ASAP! As an A7C user, you cannot understate how cheap Sony's buttons feel compared to the others. The dials are nicer though. I'm not so sure why the A7IV's mode dial is so tall though. Canon's more WYSIWYG EVF helps you dial in highlights MUCH better than Sony's. Try shooting JPG's and they both lose to Nikon. IF Nikon ever makes an Expeed8, 33mp, articulating screen, no-AA filter, Z6III... that will be my choice. Even if it is a DX D50II/D70. The A7IV can be laggy and nobody wants to deal with CFE-A cards when they already own CFE-B's. The dual slot design is pretty nice though. I often experienced brownish tints to skies and high ISO indoor photos with the Sony. Shifts that are NOT easy to correct in post. If you have color acuity, once you see this tint, you can't not see it in A7IV and A1 images. I still think the Z6II should have been included in this. If just to remind Nikon of where they stand. ;)

If I didn't already own so many Canon lenses, I might have considered Sony or Fuji, but given how much money I have in Canon glass, I bought a R6 Mk II. I'm much happier with this camera than I ever was with my 5D Mk IV! It does suck that Canon doesn't want to open up the lens mount to 3rd party lens makers. It feels silly that I'm using a 45mm f/1.8 Tamron on a EF to RF adapter with my R6 Mk II.

Since I am a Canon (DSLR) user, with a substantial investment in Canon L lenses, it's going to be the R6Mk2 for me, with an adapter. I can't afford either new Sony glass or new Canon R glass (plus I know Canon Menus so well. Ease of use is important). Basically all cameras are good enough now (they have been for still images for almost 10 years). The Canon R6 video capabilities may have clinched the deal for me to move to mirrorless. I have a Canon M50 for video and, despite many limitations, the focus tracking ability plus articulating screen, makes it so easy to shoot video. The R6mk2 seems like several iterations better. I guess I'll be trading cameras soon.

Canon should not restrict their mount on third-party manufacturer. Debatable, as third-party lenses does not get the "full" capabilities of a native first party Sony, breath-comp, faster burst on 30FPS bodies....BUT, having more choices is still better. Is always good to have choices on what glass I can get to buy. Sigma, Tamron, Samyang, Zeiss, Viltrox, TTArtisan, Voitlander and the list goes on. With the awesome build and optical quality from Sigma and Tamron, depending on your needs, these lenses can be inside your shopping list to compare with a first party Sony glass. From day 1 Sony knew they will lose in the lens lineup when they first launched their FF E-mount mirrorless system, so they also do support adapters for even more third party choices. If you have deep pockets, a Leica M glass will work well too. The first 55mm Sony-Zeiss, the G 24, 40, 50mm shows Sony's testament on having compact glass that is actually good. But you want professional? The GM bright apertures are there for you as well. At the end of the day, Canon, give consumer more control, at least let the consumers decides what glass they wish to use. That's all I think Canon users are really wishing for. And to even beat Sony, don't add restrictions on third-party lenses. If consumer really prefer the colours of the Canon glass, they will still go back to them no matter.

As a long time Canon user. I’ve never used a third party glass on my Canons. For that matter I haven’t used third party lenses on Nikon, Leica, or Hasselblad cameras that I have owned.

Need to do a video on last gen used examples. I would never buy a camera new, or a lens for that matter. The amount of depreciation, outside of Fuji that seems to cost more used than sold out MSRP, that gear goes through leads to massive savings. Even something like an E-M5 Mark II Olympus that's fairly old at this point is still a great pickup for people of all ranges of skill. Until last year the X-T3 was an amazing buy as well, they were getting down to 500's almost with KEH's "bargain" label (that in my experience is the same as most people's "Very good", I always hunt for bargain grade, got me an E-M1 Mark III for 550 USD all in that works like new just with some paint worn off where the strap hoops rubbed the body). The G9 is a great purchase with some being as low as l like 540 on MAP Camera's eBay shop (many purchases from them, faster shipping from around the world for free than 20 dollar 1 state away, and always high quality). I point out MFT because there are a lot of great lenses for affordable prices used that you can't match outside of something like the Sigmas for Pentax K mount. The 17, 25, 45, and 75 f/1.8 Olympus lenses are great (34, 50, 90, and 150 FF equiv) just like the 12-40 f/2.8 (one of the hardest for me to replace unless I want to pay 3 times the price for a roughly 24-75 ff option). A ton of people could really benefit from the lower prices and great quality that would be way more than enough for them for the foreseeable future. Will they beat the cameras here? Definitely not, but does that really matter for a large amount of people in the real world? Nope, my E-M5 Mark II I take to all my jobs as a side camera with the Olympus 20mm f/1.4 lens gets just as many keepers as my K-1 Mark II that's a fantastic camera.

What's he talking about battery ? CIPA rating for the R6 II is 760 shots in default mode. The R6 II routinely gives me 2 hours of video. Alex Barerra did side by side with both and provided RAW files and the R6 II beat the A7IV by a fair margin for dynamic range recovery and ISO noise (and was sharper despite being 24 MP vs 30 MP)

Bought the Canon R6mkii coming from a Canon background but damn that Sony was VERY appealing. The speed of the canon though for action shots takes the cake for me. It's also great when doing focus bracketing while hand holding (hard) but gets all the shots finished up before I have to breath (holding my breath). I do envy Sony having so many lenses though. Canon needs to get their crap together and open up the RF mount to other manufacturers.

Sony autofocus is top notch... until you shoot in low light and it all falls apart where Canon still focuses like it's golden hour. Especially shooting concerts Sony has been just frustrating to set up and work with. Not impossible, but frustrating. That's where I'd disagree with the review.
