Petardiers were special units of late medieval and early renaissance armies.
These explosive specialists were not engaged in open battles, but only during sieges where their skills were the most useful.

@@SStupendous yeah but the rounded head of it seems like it also directs some back towards the petardier in the same way that a shaped charge works (at least, if the charge is not powerful enough to absolutely cut through the wall very easily, a significant amount of force goes straight into the petardier's face) They had some grasp, but not enough to have it be anywhere nearly as safe as something like a modern breaching charge, or a ww2 magnetic anti tank grenade. It's still innovative ofc, but with higher material strengths they might have been even more effective. But by then, artillery existed, so moot point. Tldr it would have been safer and worked better if they had stronger steel I bet. But until then, it wasnt just as efficient. Just a disclaimer, I study rocket engines but I dont know if they work on the same principle since it's a solid explosive instead of a liquid and the steel would be made differently
@alexanderorr2528
@alexanderorr2528 4 жыл бұрын
@@sol2544 They had access to very high quality steel it's just that they didn't understand the science behind shaped charges yet. The front of the petard was only blocked by wood and metal sheeting so the force would mostly punch into the gate which would be no match. (solid stone walls were a different story)
@audiosreality
@audiosreality 4 жыл бұрын
@@alexanderorr2528 It's an interesting design. The rear bracing looks to be more significant than the animations show and the casing was extreme. People in this time had a decent idea of recoil from a cannon shot and the strength of the structure they faced. They must of understood the simple mathematics of how much bracing was required to hold the petard against the target. A wooden gate or palisade would take much less then a stone wall and a petard team was a very exposed target (think about dropping an oil filled lamp or a molotov device in the area and the risk that created. This would either be a rapid deployment attack system (think surprise attack or night assault) Whereas sustained sieges usually used tunnels and "mines" for the same effect. The only other attack method would be assaulting a unminable area (river defences or a castle on a bedrock area) I'm betting these were used along with pallises or covered defences like a ram but because they lacked a huge weighted tree trunk they could move faster. The armour would be effective when leaving if the charge didn't go off to soon.

The historical events they choose to cover are so much more interesting than most channels other channels as well, albeit a bit more morbid than most but hey, I'm pretty sure that's why we all subbed. The phrase hoist by your own petard is still used today. In WW2 some British Churchill tanks used by the 79th Armoured Division were adapted to fire a 94 mm spigoted mortar which was called a petard mortar and it was used to destroy pillboxes and other strongpoints. As they were sat inside the Churchill they armour for the crew was somewhat better then that of their historical predecessor.
