JoeysWorldTour It's not even a forgiveness thing. Pete Rose - like Willie Mays, was then as he is now, one of the biggest ambassadors of Baseball. He will get in the Hall of Fame as an Ambassador of Baseball and the irony is, his records will be ignored. I grew up in the 60s watching this man and he still is the greatest baseball player I've ever seen. That man could hit anything on either side of the plate, was an EXCELLENT fielder - he's still the only player in Baseball history to play 5 different positions and go to the All-Star Game when he played each of those 5 positions. And believe me when I say this: NOONE out-hustled him...even when he was a player-manager for the Reds. When he walked onto the field - batting or on defense, the man was electric like Barry Sanders. No question he's the greatest player in my generation with Willie Mays and Hank Aaron tied for 2nd because like Rose, these two men carried a big stick AND were amazing outfielders.

ZZBlue Comet The greatest starting lineup in MLB history, and no one better not mention the '27 Yankees either. Five years with Philadelphia. I agree he had an enormous impact getting that excellent Phillies team over the top but Pete Rose is, was, and will always be Cincinnati, for better or worse.

@@pnotuner1 In retrospect it's very easy to say that Rose scoring from 1st against Houston had already decided matters. Jon Lanier The whole list? Well, I guess Babe Ruth and Mickey Mantle should each have an asterisk for often playing hungover or drunk. Hell, let's put an asterisk next to Lou Gehrig. That guy played the end of his career with a disease. ...his own disease! Anyone who played the game with a disease had an unfair advantage, because my logic is as sound as yours. Conversely, I think Dock Ellis should have made it in for throwing a no-no on LSD. Honestly though, I just wish Pete Rose would completely own up to what he did, and was apologetic. Over the years, it seems that for every step forward he makes, he ends up taking two steps back. I want him to be in. I just wish he would own up and ask for forgiveness.

Plysomack Ruth should actually have an asterisk next to his name, he had atrocious hitting mechanics and wouldn't have been an all-star during the 40's or 50's, let alone a HOF. I understand the desire for Rose to confess but there has already been so much tension and disappointment on both sides of this (Rose & MLB/Commissioners) for decades- the right thing to do is let him in asap.

Jon Lanier I am aware. I'm aware of the many players throughout many eras that took not only recreational drugs, but performance enhancing drugs. The 80s saw the Daryl Strawberrys, Dave Parkers, and Tim Raines' of the baseball world as prime examples, as well as many others. (However, I note that none of the players mentioned are in the HOF). Then there's the 90s and 00s rife with PED scandals. Hell, it's still around today. Finally, we have amphetamines. Rumors go back 50 years, or more. I assume not everyone took them, but it's probably safe to say that it was rampant. Amphetamines weren't illegal for a time, and they weren't a banned substance in MLB until 2006. But amphetamines were not originally looked upon as a PED. They were a way to keep going when you were tired or worn out. And, if everyone was taking them as you purport, then no one had an advantage over anyone else as a direct result. If you want an asterisk next to every player that took amphetamines, then fine. Just make sure that there is a sign or legend explaining what those asterisks mean. (We can color code those asterisks green, as in greenies). But the asterisk next to Pete Rose will have it's own distinct color and meaning: Gambled on baseball. This man, for a time, had his integrity in question. It is true that he has done much for the game of baseball, the Cincinnati Reds organization, and the city of Cincinnati. He is also the greatest hitter of all-time. For this we honor him in the HOF (hopefully one day). He has served his penance, asked for forgiveness (hopefully one day), and has been forgiven (hopefully one day). But let it be known that he did these things. His asterisk stands alone, above (or below) all others.

Stephen Stewart So what? Selig is an idiot. Puts the screws to Rose for gambling (which is LEGAL by the way, and if Rose took this to court, he would win) YET Selig turns a blind eye to all the felons on the field using illegal prescription medications and corked bats so they could hit 500' homers and jacking up 60-70 HR seasons which puts @sses in the seats. To me, Selig did FAR worse than Rose ever did.

As with anything in life, there has to be a way back into honor. Any agency, league or individual who HOLDS on to a grudge or punishment, without devising a way back for another, is the one with the problem.

notice that no player has bet on baseball in over 25 yrs since Rose was taken down for it. It stands as a powerful deterant and to backtrack on Rose's ban would undermine the seriousness of the violation and hurt the integredy of the game. Major league baseball was Rose's employer. If I break the rules where I work I can be fired which effectively bans me from ever working with that organization again. Rose is no better than anyone else, he must be held accountable as such.
