i remember the first time i heard this song, i was on holiday visiting my sister and her husband in Canberra (capital city of Australia, was looking at the scenery of all these NEW houses going up and it was just like the song, little boxes on the hillsides all looking the same except for colour. I just burst out laughing, and my brother in law was surprised when i told him why i was laughing, evrything looked exactly the same i still see the SAME compartmentalising TODAY. I left school @ 15, started working and never stopped working. never got to college or university, didnt have the money to pay for it. but still ended up in the "box" assigned [male worker, poorly educated married, children]. now over 70 and see kids going through the SAME shit i did. Saddens me to think so much tech and there are STILL people falling through the cracks in our society.

When I was little. I never could understand why the world wanted me to fit in a little square. I was Dsylexic but I didn't know that for decades later. Being creative and an early artist. I was never like the others. Now in my 70's as I look back. I am glad of the struggles because they (others) became the center of my artwork that everyone loved. Never understanding it but loving it. Some of us are born special because the world needs us to shake it up or move it along. Love your review.

I smiled through the whole song-I grew up hearing Pete Seeger and forgot how much I enjoyed his music and other folk singers of the 50’s and 60’s! He was a member of the Weavers in the 50’s. I think I will be listening to the Weavers today😄

It’s not so much about how we are all alike, but how society tries to shoehorn everyone into “little boxes” that fit into the narrative they prefer.

For sure. I just used that phrase in the title.

We would sing that every time we drove by on our way to the San Francisco airport.

Thanks for this! Hadn't heard it in years. Love Pete Seeger so much! I grew up on a regular Saturday evening folk music show on the radio, and his music was played frequently.

I lived in one of those Ticky tacky house Our was yellow. These houses are in Daly City California south of SF!!! I loved that house right near the ocean!! Artichoke field gone for houses that did fall over the cliffs sandstone. Our place was under hard clay

I love this song! What a cool choice. I grew up in one of those suburbs with 3-bedroom bungalows as far as the eye could see. Replicated little boxes, and they all looked just the same. Ours was yellow. This song encapsulates it in a profound way. Did you see all seasons of "Weeds"? In seasons 2,3 and 8, there were 37 different covers of this song.

Great song! Wow, that must have been an experience hearing this for the first time. I did see the entire show when it aired, but havent seen it since. I remember there were different versions, but very vaguely.

It was great to hear this song again. I hadn't heard it since the mid-sixties when I was a young child. I remember now that when I was five or six this was my favorite song! At the time we lived in Germany on a Canadian military base. Our family only had two or three records to play & there was no english language songs on the radio. Consequently I probably heard this song a few times a day for the two years we lived there. I suspect I knew all the lyrics by heart at that time because now 58 years later, hearing it again, all those lyrics seem so familiar. Thanks for reopening a part of my memories that were practically forgotten.

Pete Seeger brought this out in the late 50's. We, as kids, walked around sing this song. Ticky Tacky = Fibrolite & Stucko.

"Saccos letter to his Son" is an excellent one from Pete Seegar. Malvina has so many great songs as well.

Also the main song on box trolls, but a different version. That was the first time I heard it.

Malvina lived here in the Bay Area and wrote the song about the rows of tract house clones in the cities of San Bruno and South San Francisco for example. Needless to say, it got a lot of radio play here.

Please review Pete Seeger's song, "Where have all the Flowers Gone?" It dwells on the cyclical nature of life like Little Houses does as well, but it's much, much sadder.

I will add it to my list. Definitely sounds like a song i will like. Thanks!

If you like this song, you might like another song by Malvina Reynolds, also covered by Pete, The Battle Of Maxton Field.
