Another great video, quality of information is unsurpassed whenever you manage to get footage of a master of a craft demonstrating best practice technique in tip pruning of mangoes and explaining why it is done that way. There is no better way to learn than having the privilege of being shown in a practical demonstration a skill that is so crucial for successful mango fruit production. Answering questions from the public regarding feeding, in particular organic methods was particularly helpful. Once again thankyou Pete Kanaris and Dr. Richard Campbell.

Interesting, my first step when pruning is to clean out the branches touching the soil or getting close to the soil (prevent mangos on the ground), then climb in the middle, get all the leaders shooting for the sky, crossovers, anything creating contention for light and air movement in the center. Then jump to the outside and tip prune. One question I would have asked, cleaning your tools between trees is a known practice, but what about cleaning while on a tree to prevent spread of bacterial and fungal problems? Love your channel Pete, your video quality is getting really good.

@@PeteKanarisGreenDreamsFL you recommend pruning??? The permaculture class I was taking recommended to never prune a tree because once you prune it you need to keep pruning it. Ashley - As a fertilizer, the N-P-K (Nitrogen-Phosphorus-Potassium) ratio of bone meal can vary greatly, depending on the source. From a low of 3-15-0 to as high as 2-22-0. ,[3] though some steamed bone meals have N-P-Ks of 1-13-0.[citation needed] Bone meal is also an excellent source of calcium, but does not provide enough nitrogen to be beneficial to plants.
@Ash-fd8ww6 жыл бұрын
Last year I feel like I made a mistake when I decided to put nitrogen on my Kent when it was developing flowers; All of the flowers and buds fell off, and it decided to just grow more branches, so at least this year we had more fruit-growing points. I do just raw, whole, sun-rested bones now in the rainy season because; I just don't trust that some fertilizers wont actually stay in the sugar-sand underneath it.

Very nice video Pete Kanaris, very informative. We have a question, we live in South Florida and we purchased a potted Keitt mango tree that was about 3 feet tall and it was left unattended in the pot for about 8 months and it grew real tall, approx.7 to 8 feet, it has no low branches whatsoever, only a single long stem and only few branches on the very top; because we have a small area assigned for this tree we wouldn’t want to have a tall large tree; how can I prune it to get lower branches and keep it small? May I do a drastic cut of the stem at 3 feet or so and still get it to branch out or am I going to destroy it? Thank you in advance.

@scottburgle4889 Жыл бұрын
Norman…since no one has answered you I will give you my opinion. Pruning is best done right after the last fruit for the season has been harvested. Black spots on mangoes are oftentimes due to low Boron. Brexil Multi is a good micro granular fertilizer that can help this. Not sure of its availability in S. Africa. Boron content in the fertilizer should be around 0.5%. It also has iron, magnesium, manganese, and zinc. Hope this helps. Keep me posted. I’m invested now!😂

I am growing a 3 foot tree which I thought came from a mango seedling I got from the grocery store. But it has developed thorns along it's trunk; and the leaves, although they look like mango leaves, are only 2 to 3 inches. I've tried to look for information of mango tree variations and none of them has mentioned a thorned trunk description but I can't understand how it could not be a mango tree. When I planted the seedling, because of poor soil, I dug a 3 foot hole with a 2 foot diameter; took out the soil and half mixed it with potting soil. I put in 2 seeds: Indian mango and Honey mango, if I remember correctly. So am i growing a Mango tree or not? Does any mango tree variant have thorns in the trunk? Or should I just start over?
