I saw Peter Gabriel in 1985 on his tour following the release of his 4th album. The last song he sang was "Biko". When the lights went up, no one left the theatre...just a sea of flames from lighters. Incredible experience. One of a kind.

This song always reminds me of where we come from as blacks. I am happy generations to come will know that the freedom of South Africa was received at a cost. I am a South Africa. I salute those who caught for the democracy. The fight is not over!

We need this song in 2022 as much as we needed it when Peter wrote it. As many western democracies shift to the extreme right and strip away human rights, the life and spirit of Stephen Biko must inspire us all to fight injustice & stand up for those who cannot.

I saw this performed at the Human Rights Now concert in 1998, Amnesty Int' celebrating the Declaration of Human Rights. Apartheid was still in place and the audience response for this song was huge and emotional, but today we still need this, still need reminding that all lives matter, especially the historically oppressed. It's not good enough to say everyone's now equal when any population still live in poverty under consistent pervasive discrimination.
