No way, man. The Secret World version blows this away. PG is about a hundred times more animated, so much so that he’s practically hyperactive! All while managing to sound great. Paula Cole is on another level completely. The whole song is just so much more energetic and joyous. And as it’s an energetic and joyous song, that can only be a good thing. I saw the Growing Up concert live and it was great. But it wasn’t a patch on Secret World. That was peak PG.

"This Day in Music" - 26 July 1986, Peter Gabriel went to No.1 on the US singles chart with 'Sledgehammer', a No.4 hit in the UK. The song's music video has won a number of awards, including a record nine MTV Awards at the 1987 MTV Video Music Awards, and Best British Video at the 1987 Brit Awards. Gabriel was also nominated for three Grammy Awards. As of 2011, 'Sledgehammer' is the most played music video in the history of MTV.

Me and my football team received an impromptu live performance of this song when we were touring the old Wembley Stadium, in what must have been about 1989. While we walked alongside the pitch from one end, workmen were busy installing a stage - you could hear hammers and drills, etc. while our guide was telling us about the pitch’s draining system and so on. Then, that distinctive intro to ‘Sledgehammer’ blared out and we were treated to an impromptu live performance by Peter Gabriel and his band rehearsing this song. They got about a third of the way through it, stopped, then performed the whole song from scratch. Loved it ever since. I also like Morgan James’s take on it; sounds very different from a female perspective.
